The goddess Athena has been abducted by the Lord of the Underworld. Her father, the great god Zeus, searched for a brave warrior strong enough to save her. He chose a brave warrior who died with honour & courage on the battlefield. Zeus raised the warrior from the grave and granted him the power to morph into a powerful, holy beast in order to do battle against the unspeakable horrors of the Underworld.

There’s actually a story behind this: in accordance to Greek myth the Gods were forbidden to interfere with human affairs. When Neff kidnapped Athena, Zeus by his own accord couldn’t intervene, therefore resurrecting a Centurion to do his bidding.

Little Easter Egg, one of the corpse faces in the foreground of the final stage is doing the Scream painting face.
There's also another Easter Egg, in the first level, one of the graves actually has the name "Alex" on it. Probably referring to Alex Kidd who was Sega's mascot before Sonic. I guess at this point in time Sega were already considering ditching him.

Man, these were the days when games were so good! When every game was so varied and different! Like Altered Beast and Contra, where all you had to do was spam 2 buttons and pay-to-win with quarters! Nowadays all we have a lame ass games like Fallout 4 and Far Cry 4 where all you do is shoot everything in sight! Modern he's are sooooo simple and dumbed down!!! (lol)

I will also add that Far Cry has one of the best plots for a video game franchise ever and the Fallout series, despite its flaws in some ways, actually can teach you a LOT about post-apocalyptic/the end of the world as we know it/End Times survival, so I say this in return to you two mental midgets. I like getting the best bang for my proverbial buck as I can when it comes to content for video games, and Altered Beast is, at best, merely a minigame in the long run, and that is being kind to the arcade/video game. In Golden Axe, sometimes you don't lose a life bar when hit. I think it's the same in this game. This playthrough has not a loss of life bars but damage is another thing, i guess.
