Excellent talk here coach Dan. This is a great discussion going over how to take an honest look at your skills and body type, from a “next level scouting” perspective, to find your path to improvement. Coach Dan provides questions to ask, in taking an honest audit of capabilities at each position, to help uncover what “track” may be the best fit- “Do you have the range to field balls in extreme left center field? Do you have the wheels and the arm for that position? Can these skills be practiced and improved?, if not, is there a more appropriate track (position) for me to begin pursuing now? - Would your coach say you’re ready for “next level play”? She would?! But at a different position?? Whyzatt? Thanks for the great talk coach! T
Lol, my daughter broke the mold in high school. She was a 5'2 100lb catcher who was fast. She used her ice hockey/fh skills to block, and her speed to pop up fast. She also played short.
my daughter is getting recruited by Arizona and she going to have to change her position or she going have to battle it out to play her normal position. great video!
Love the video: My question is - I have a daughter going into 14U travel ball this next season, but she plays Catcher, 3rd base, SS, and CF and does really well at them all. She's fast and has an awesome arm and is a power hitter on her team. She's 5'5" now and still growing and she's fit, quick, strong, and athletic. What position/s should she focus on and by what age should she decide? I don't know what bin she should be in. Can you give any guidance?
Im 15 (female), and I want to start playing softball. I guess some people would describe me as chubby, maybe "biggest" level like you would describe it (I weight 180 pounds). But, I'm 5'5 and that's pretty short. Where would you necessarily place someone like me? I wouldn't consider myself fast, but I do have muscles, due to working out. My doctor also told me that 5'5 is most likely going to be my height for the rest of my life and that I most likely stopped growing since I've been stuck there for 3 years now. Let me know your thoughts. 😊 P.S - Before the next season starts, I'm planning to train and lose some weight. And btw I really appreciate your help and this video. I would probably place myself in the 3rd bin but, I am short. Hahaha
Question please coach Dan, my daughter just turned 14 and she falls into the small, scrappy, and fast bin. She used to play SS but has been kind of stuck on 2nd base and she is one of the players that shouts out where to go, what to do, reminder to be ready, encourages the pitcher, etc…I encourage her to speak to the coach about playing some SS. Any thoughts how she can approach the coach on that?
shouting directions and encouragement is great - but does she have the skills? Ultimately, encouragement doesn't pay the bills if her skills dont match those of a shortstop. Is she actually good enough?
Keep track of how many balls get hit to her and how many get hit to short. My guess is short has a stronger more accurate throw than she does. And second is a great position! Be happy she's not sitting on the bench. She cld just say to coach, what do I need to work on to play short. I'm sure they wld tell her.
for a couple months now my elbow has been hurting a lot from throwing and idk how to fix it bc each time i throw its so painful on the inside and outside of my elbow do u have anything that u think will help me with my throwing and if so can u make a video abt it please🙏
So I’m barely a few minutes into the video , but I just wanted to ask you directly for you opinion. I’m 15 yrs old 5’3 and weigh 125 pounds. I’m a very good runner and strong. I also have good reflexes But I have no experience for softball and I start practicing next week and I am kinda nervous. But what position do you think would be best ??
Hey im 14 5'11 and weigh 70kg. Ive pitched for the last 3 years but i dont think ill be as good as the people in my age group so im thinking of trying another position but i dont really know where. I have a good arm and im pretty athletic. Ive also played shortstop when i dont pitch but i dont think im next level. What do you think. im male btw
the point is that most players who are "good" at any given position usually fit that position re: body type and skills. And no, the video was not mostly about body type - body type is inextricably linked to skills.
I’m 12 and I’m thinking about playing softball, I used to play tee ball but stopped for a while. I’m 5’3 1/2 and I’m not really small nor big. What position would you place me?
I get what you're saying, but with say 10u, rec ball, girl pitching, you want your best players at pitching, catching, and first base. Putting your best player at short in this age group, wastes her talent. She won't get very many balls thrown at her, and most catchers aren't strong enough to throw to second on a steal. Best way to get outs is strike outs, and plays at first. Usually second gets more balls than short.

Played short stop for 8 years! Loved every minute of it.
Coach Blewett, You are wise beyond your years!
Great advice for parents and players trying to figure out how they translate at the next level.
One of the best videos I've seen for players going into the teen yrs.

I did the same and ended up playing short stop my entire whole career!

Just let it play out. if shes legitimately fast, then not catcher. but it should be what she has the most fun playing
I would also suggest based on what the teams she is playing for needs.

the biggest question is your skills, since you're starting so late. But my guess is 3rd or 1st will be the only positions that will fit.

Most of this video is about body type. That is important but if your good at that position do that one it isn’t all that matters!

If I was your coach, I'd put you in the infield or outfield and see what works best for you - if you're just getting into it, just see what works best
Love
Random question, have you ever heard Bryan Regan's stand up comedy on slow pitch softball? If not you should look it up and do a reaction video.
I havent; not really into that type of video but thanks for the suggestion

Yeah this isn’t aimed at 10u
None of them
Great advice! Great video!
