OMG! I love this place! Visited a few years ago (although I did park at the top and walk down). Always wanted to go back for a holiday. Thanks for the memory!❤
There are lots of coastal villages in Devon and Cornwall like this, most people leave their cars in the car parks and walk down as in many instances, there's no room to turn.
To any international viewers watching this, this road isn't particularly narrow by English standards, it's fairly typical for very old villages/towns/cities to be built like this. York and Bath are two examples that spring to mind.
My sister lives in Bath, lol. I'm well acquainted with the roads. I drive a Vauxhall Vivaro van and it's a pain in the arse, especially the road she lives on!
Delivered down there. At 22 seconds where the green grit bin is. We took a range cooker up those narrow steps. What a great day at the office that was.
It has changed tremendously since I was there in 1986. The road was still stoned and now it's paved. Stayed overnight at a pub to the right down on the bay. Used to be able to drive and park there.
Been down a hiway er two like this in me day !! Me X's ma lived at the end of one years ago. I LOVED takin her up to see her ma !! Ontario .Ca, winter time > fresh fallen snow(snowin like hell !!) Ohhhh them corners EH !! WAVIN a hand !!
@NeilArcherExtras I believe the surname was Thompson? Could be Emerson? Or Emerson was my great grandma's maiden name? Been there a few times as a kid! I remember my dad had a chat with the person in the post office! Apparently there were only 6 surnames in robinhoods Bay back then! I'm 48 now! I'm planning a tour next year to do the dales, peaks, moors and robinhoods Bay! Looking forward to it! May have lunch in the laural Inn, if its still there!?
All the idiots who drive down when there are a number of large warning signs stating "NO ACCESS'', RESIDENTS ONLY", then you pass another one saying "NO YOU CAN'T DRIVE DOWN JUST FOR A LOOK".
@@dieselbushcraft1299 You may not be aware but there are a number of large signs at the top of the bank stating that there is no parking and access only for residents. There's also one at the top of the bank stating....."No you can't drive down just for a look". But I guess people just ignore them.
@@098317 yes mate I know that road very well and yes I am fully aware of those signs. It doesn’t excuse pedestrians ignorance of vehicle movement around them. I’ve seen that behaviour so many times before in other areas too. Try Church St and Henrietta St, not as narrow or steep but a whole lot busier with pedestrians. Both locations need vehicle access for numerous genuine reasons and that doesn’t include sightseeing.
It's one of those lovely little places where you go in own one road and you come back out up that same stretch of road because the road ends at the sea.
This is the finale of the Coast to Coast walk, or the start if you choose to walk westwards. We did it 2006. Feet in the sea at the end and throw the pebbles that we collected at St Bee's beach on the other coast.
Why would you drive down a road with very restricted clearance just to film how narrow it is?No wonder that locals get rightly annoyed with mindless visitors.
We were staying at Downhill Cottage right at the bottom and my elderly parents couldn’t walk up and down the hill - so as ‘locals’ for 2 nights we were allowed to take the car down there to pick them up and drop them off at the cottage.
How inconsiderate of the builders of Robin Hoods Bay to not make the streets wide enough for cars! After all, it was only built a couple of hundred years before cars were invented. Not good enough! Best flatten the place and start again. Doing so might get rid of all these old tourists wandering around in the rain for no particular purpose as well.
Old tourists?.Well they seem quite happy to accept the money that tourists bring. You can't have it both you wan t the money,so stop whining about it....
How do the people that live there get around? Where do they park there cars? I get they walk around, but how do they shop, I see little shops, but not for groceries shopping and everything else?
I've been down one in Cornwall narrower and steeper than that. And with army socks driving, it was pretty tense. She thinks she's still in a tank and not a land rover. Yikes!
In Cornwall we have a saying, if you can drive in Cornwall, you can drive anywhere! We are experts at passing even on the narrowest Cornish roads, by a technique we refer to as hedging! 😂 it’s the art of driving partially up a cornish hedge to allow another car to pass! 😆
We love Cornwall. My wife's dad and grandparents are from Boscastle and she used to spend her entire school summer holidays there. We were there just over a month ago and took the road by Minster Church all the way to the end! We were 'hedging' and there wasn't even anything coming the other way lol.
lol. That’s funny! Yeah our country lanes and village roads need nerves of steel sometimes 🤣 I remember when I was working in London a friend came home with me on a visit to see mum and my brother. She used to freak when I would partially drive up a hedge to allow someone to pass. I used to laugh and say, you can always tell a local by all the scratches on their front side panels! 😆@@NeilArcherExtras
I find it odd when built hundreds of years ago, it wasn't to the regulation of two horse and carriages wide. That's how roads were measured in the first place. A horse pulling a carriage was supposed to be able to pass another comfortably on a road. Hence the width. I am sure the Romans would never approve of anything less.
If you know the size of your car and you're an experienced driver you can do that with no problem. A lot of roads in Europe, especially in the south, are like that. I can't help it - I do not see any difficulty there.
If I had not been to europe I would not have agreed that european streets could be very narrow. Now I understand why some old calcutta's streets are so narrow. Then I ask why do ancient cities in India like Varanasi also have narrow streets, did they always have connection with europe throughout ancient times?
We were staying in an Airbnb at the bottom and my elderly parents couldn’t go up and down the hill by foot - so technically we were allowed to drop off and pick up and park at the top of the hill 😊
I'm impressed by all the healthy people walking through this town, esp. up the hill!
Memories of having a drink outside that pub at the bottom on a sunny evening many years ago. Cheers from NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿

True. Another beautiful part of the country. My wife’s ancestors are from Boscastle.
Robin Hood's Bay is one of my fave places. To be in the Bay Hotel with the North Sea lapping against the windows is surreal and sublime.

Beautiful village, you should have left the car in the car park and walked.
We did, but we were staying in a cottage at the bottom and had to come and pick up my elderly parents who couldn’t do the walk to the car park.
My great grandad ran the post office when he was a young man! My grandma worked there also!

Thank you for this driving video. I enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it
I've driven on streets so narrow (in southern Spain) you had to fold in the side mirrors to fit through.
There are very narrow streets like these in the West Country too.🇬🇧
Yes. We love Cornwall and Devon
Good thing there was nothing parked on that forecourt where you had to pass the other car.
Absolutely gorgeous!😅😊
What happened at the end ?
Was wide enough for most 60’s cars not the low wide ones made today
All the idiots who drive down when there are a number of large warning signs stating "NO ACCESS'', RESIDENTS ONLY", then you pass another one saying "NO YOU CAN'T DRIVE DOWN JUST FOR A LOOK".
A lot of them do
@@NeilArcherExtras Unfortunately a lot of visitors to our village think its fun or simply too lazy to walk.
Well driven. It’s the way that people are oblivious to the fact there is a car and they are at the end of the day walking on a road.

It’s beautiful!
Love the bicycle parked-up near the end. Cycling up and down those streets?
My wife & i spent time in this area & did this drive down wonderful area ! Whitby it’s also James Martin country ! excellent Fish Restaurants
It's beautiful there, as children we often used to go on a weekend.😊
Well worth a visit
Very steep hill, must be dangerous in winter with ice and snow. A car went out of control here some years ago when the brakes failed.
These towns were around loooooong before automobiles. 😉
Especially huge suvs like we have today.
One place i have still to visit, looks absolutely beautiful, won’t be taking the car down there though

The biggest mystery is how the ice cream van gets onto and off the beach.
The crazy thing is not parking in the carpark at the top of the hill.
They did, but they needed to collect elderly parents from the B&B - read the description.
a lot of disabled people cant walk that far .

Yes,OK.I live by the sea,in a tourist area. You want the money..you accept the inconvenience of tourists.
Why is this street two directional? How do the cars back up in case of meeting each other?
Great village
Looks like Hamble, Hampshire, UK.
We've done it. Agreed don't take a car BUT, the walk back UP!!!!! Phew.
I can run all the way up and I'm 63.did it last week with my granddaughter running behind shouting wait for me .leave the car at the top.
How do the people that live there get around? Where do they park there cars? I get they walk around, but how do they shop, I see little shops, but not for groceries shopping and everything else?
i lived in Camborne in Cornwall and they were very narrow
Wasn't narrow by the standards of the day when Robin Hoods Bay was built. You could easily get 2 horse and carts side by side back in those days🐎
Narrow, windy, blind curves, steep and 2-way. What's not to love?!!
You used to have to leave cars in carpark,at the the top
It was a pain, because if you had shopping, you had to lug it down
@@matildabond..2390 Oh no! You had to walk down, carrying your shopping!
@RhiannonFan I sense sarcasm...but thanks for your reply
You still do, unless you’re a local
It's a cozy little old place but I can see why most walk not drive .
Surely there's a sign at the top that says it's a dead end.😅
Looks like any coastal village in Cornwall
Perfect vehicle for those streets 😂
😂
Roads over there are no joke!
And the purpose of this exercise ?. It clearly states at the top not to drive down for a look and unsuitable for motor vehicles.
Elderly parents who couldn’t make it up the hill. Only choice we had was drive down and get them.
I for one would not have made it very far on this street. It's quaint but something I'll never get to see.
There is a road in Ireland called Murphy's Highway that is so narrow that no one can go through. To be sure, to be sure.
Top spot for those chancers that jump onto your bonnet to sue you.
I noticed the public using the road look at you as if your not supposed to be using the road for driving, the pavements are narrow but useable.
That’s 3 minutes I’m never going to get back 😢
I've been down one in Cornwall narrower and steeper than that. And with army socks driving, it was pretty tense. She thinks she's still in a tank and not a land rover. Yikes!
I was just about to say, get yer backside down West me Handsome, plenty of room there - you could drive a tank down this road!
Yes. Cornwall have narrow roads too.
Why does it need cars delivery at night on a rota basis please tell me if I'm wrong even for residents
So close to all the folks!
You'm only close if 'e hits 'em!
😂🤣 that’s wide compared to most Cornish village/ countryside roads!

Wow so many people walking randomly around like a film set. What are they doing? Didn’t notice the road narrows warning signs… probably been nicked

Why do so many pedestrians choose not to walk on the pavements but prefer the road?
Most of the pavements are too narrow to walk on.
Is it one-way??
It should be.
There is only one road.
Like Fishguard in Wales lol

My parents own a cottage there we go like 1 time a month
That must be great to visit often. We stayed at Downhill Cottage for 2 nights and it was lovely.
So your bothering the pedestrians TWICE?
Lots of professional jaywalkers in Whitby! They must be getting paid to wander all over the road like that!
Those places were built in the times of horses .
Some streets in Bristol are even narrower , ( tiny car essential ! ) .......... DAVE™🛑
Well , thats 3 minutes of my life I won't get back.
Wasn't a bother when the biggest vehicles on the road were Morris Minors and Robin Reliants.
Pedestrians only thank you 👍🏿👻

Thank you. All is good at home.
I can't comment yet cos I don't know what car you're driving. Audi Q7 maybe??
Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid. Horrible car. Was supposed to get a Ford Kuga but this is all National Car Rental had.
Should be access only.
Call that narrow? I used to live in Duck Street, Mousehole, Cornwall, and you can't even get a car down there. 😂
Should be a one-way street
It's a dead end.
Go take a look at Polperro if you think this is narrow.
Never mind in ten years time if you can still afford a private car it won't be long before a ban on use comes in.
If you've paid your road tax, you can drive on that road. But you'd have to be a barmpot!
Should be a one way road.
It's a dead end.
Maybe it should be renamed “Dogsville Bay” !
👏👏👏👏👏 👍
the solution is simple , make it a one way road ........
There’s no other road to get back up unfortunately
Looks nice but far too many people
