The Jolly Roger is the aforementioned black flag; the ship was named The Fancy, and it, Henry Avery, and his disappearance were actual, historical people and events. Though Doctor Who obviously puts an alien twist on it.
Yeah, it was after the episode that I remembered David Tennants time with the Tardis and I’ve watched the next episode now🤣 I had no idea, that’s so interesting! I really enjoy when a show uses historical people but provides their own explanation for things, like disappearances.
The actor who plays the Captain in this story is called Hugh Bonneville. He plays the famous pirate captain called Henry Every (Avery it varies in sources). The reason he feels more like a naval officer is because most pirates during the 17th century golden age of piracy were former naval pirates officers of the Britain . So he would still have that strict demeanour of a Naval Captain. Interestingly no one knows what actually happened to Captain Every as he disappeared in 1696. It’s speculated that he retired and went into hiding to live out the rest of his life, never being caught. So the ending with Every and his crew travelling the stars, while quite far fetched is a nice way to solidify his tale. He’s also known as “The Pirate King” “The Arch Pirate.” Xx

The Kraken is a mythical beast, but my Scottish neighbour did keep asking me about some bloke called Phil McKraken? I don't know the geezer, I must have told her a hundred times. She was gorgeous but only ever seemed interested in the mysterious Phil McKraken... no idea if she ever found him
I didn't know Henry Avery, his disappearance and the ship was historically real. The writers though do sometimes offer nuggets like this in storylines. Personally not my favorite stand alone episode but liked the response.Impressed by the editing. But What's happening to Amy? How much does the Doctor know? It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I remember that this episode caught my attention mainly for the acting. Matt, Karen, Arthur, Hugh and, well, pretty much everyone was great! That was also my first time seeing the Doctor interact with pirates and I really liked the parallel he makes with the travelling since they both "travel far" and all of that, it was fun. Also, he might be able to shot pirate Amy first, but it's pirate Amy, so he wouldn't dare. Also, what's the eye patch lady thing all about? 👀 You singing while Amy was doing chest compressions took me back to my first aid classes, those were fun times. About what you said with assuming Rory will just come back, that was funny, but I totally get your logic and I can't really argue with you there, Rory seems to be unkillable.
