"Moscow is blocking foreign investors, who hold tens of billions of dollars worth of Russian stocks and bonds, from exiting (...) Russian companies were also barred from paying dividends to overseas shareholders. It did not specify how long the curbs, which don't apply to local investors, would last." --REUTERS, March 2, 2022
They could afford to for a bit. With the ruble going way down itd be kind of dumb to encourage people to sell. What if Russia forces the EU to buy Russian energy in rubles? That’d cause the ruble to rise again and then the stock market would rise to cause the ruble rose.
Instructive to see no one is immune to emotional stresses of investing. Contrarianism more or less inherently guarantees the the degree of difficulty of initiating a position. Doing so when you don’t necessarily need to adds another layer of difficulty. It is the process and it’s repetition that validates the risk and rationalizes the discomfort.
Apropos your request to say whether i liked the chat. I loved it. Very energising, very bold and I can understand the reasoning. Interviewer and interviewee works like a charm. And that is important. Cheers to both of you.
The trading houses stopped all trading in Russia. Things got “too cheap” so they stopped retail trading so the banks and investment houses could go buy up all the shares. Then when they allow the stocks to be bought and sold they will get rich and the retail buyers will of course be buying at the higher price.
Sberbank trading at 40c pre market. Brokers don’t allow me to trade otc pre market. Then opened over 1. I grabbed a few, then trading was shut off. I agree. Would’ve grabbed a bunch at 40c. The upside vs downside is huge. Knowing I can lose 100% nonetheless.
Always like the style of Rick Rule he knows about investing That's an understatement! Useful and honest, I learn something new every time I listen. If you don't like his honesty then your not allowing your self to learn. Opportunities are the greatest resource I'm taking advantage of this one!
Hi Rick, I've lost money before on stocks that have taken a dive, but being told by my broker that I'm unable to purchase stocks with my own money is the first time I've felt truly this sick. I'm an Australian using Interactive Brokers and have been blocked from purchasing any OTC Russian stocks. Do you have suggestions on circumventing this? My weekly contributions to my portfolio are about $400, so I feel that's not significant enough to be managed by Sprott?
Folks are saying Fidelity, but I'm thinking they'll be restricting soon. Funds take 2-3 days to settle, as well. Might be worth a shot. I was able to buy some through etrade on Monday morning. By mid-day, they implemented restrictions. I'm down 20-50% on them as of today.
Hey Skobb, check for the vaneck RSX etf, it is still available on my broker, not sure for ibkr tho. RSX gives access to russian majors such as Gazprom, Norilsk, Sberbank, Polymetal, Polyus, and more. however I do not know if it will remain listed for long, and I'm not sure if they will be able to distribute the dividends (which should be very high at this point). Hope this helps. Cheers.
If you have IB then dont use OTC and trade London directly but LSE halted trading anyway so here it wont help you. I bought *just before* the halt, and yeah Im down like 40%. Not worried tbh. I have more shares than I wanted and bought them for far less then I expected to so it is what it is

Great video, great principles, great insights! Thank you so much Rick and Albert for caring about others and sharing this!!!! Question: are Cameco and Nexgen still a good buy at March 2 prices? Why is KazAtomProm going down when it is not involved in the war? It's a great buy, isn't it?
Excellent interview I allocated a “down payment” in RSX today Vaneck Russia ETF. Was going to buy yesterday but held off but listening to your position in Russian equities in resource sector gage me the push I needed. Thank you
I was looking at RSX and the price drop in that is incredible. Not sure I would want to do a Russian focused ETF but I did take a position in Gazprom and am thinking about Norilsk too. Polymetal and Polyus are trading at absolutely extreme fire sale prices. In my opinion at their current prices I consider them free.
I own RSX too but this one feels a lot more risky than just owning shares directly. You don't know if they will decide to close the fund at the bottom here.

Rick!….for someone like me who was forced to stop working due to health issues and is now trying to complete retirement by investing, you are an AMAZING help! Please continue with these discussions and any thoughts to help us through the short term and medium term swings in the market are much appreciated!!
Thanks guys.... always great to hear from people who have been there and done it all before (well nearly anyway) so that we can learn from mistakes and learning you have already made. Would love to hear more chats just like this particularly rick because I appreciate your up front , unapologetic opinions and approach. You don't care if others share your opinions and often see it as an edge if they don't. If you find out later you are wrong you are happy to admit it..... that is a rare thing in todays world.
Question, Rick Rule often says that when you believe in a stock if it declines 50% or more that you should be happy and use this as an opportunity to buy. But, doesn't he also say that his mistakes are holding onto losing stocks. Therefore I think an explanation on this is required. Additionally, when you run a fund or are a billionaire you have access to large resources and can dollar cost average, but normal people find that more difficult. I also note that Rick has been a buyer of POLY, which is now down significantly and looks to be in a terrible situation. Some comment on this would be appreciated because he has previously talked the share up, as he has done with the Russian miners who are all now down. I would also like his views on top nickel picks, I like HZM.
Yes I agree this is great. Rick has a consistent message which might seem boring to some but that's their mistake. No fluff truth which is lacking in today's world. Is there also a gold webinar coming up? Love it!
