Guessed all right, the RNC without the super Nice for me is the winner
Super nice is my favorite on this track. Thanks for the video!
Im glad you appreciated it!
I bought a few of these RNC's years ago ... before I really knew what great compression was. I have some stellar plugins, but this video reminded me that I won't be selling my RNC's anytime soon. 🙂
I did guess correctly, I’m glad because I just ordered one and from all the demos I’ve heard I’m going to be happy I did. Sample A sounded really good, B not so much, and C really good with more natural transients. Thanks for the video, hadn’t heard it on a full mix yet.
I’m really happy to hear that this helped you. Have fun with it!
Shoot, I haven't been using my RNC as a bus mixer and now I think I've been silly to ignore for that purpose it all these years! Super helpful.
It worked really well! Just wish the controls were stepped
EXACTLY!!! I've been overlooking my RNC's for too many years!! ❤
The "really nice" mode (C) does, to my ears, exactly that. Very engaging, nice sound.
Another great review - thank you!
glad I could help
RNC IS FREAKING AWESOME
I thought that A sounded more exciting and interesting than the rest. Great video, thanks.
Thank you for your comment
Making me reconsider selling! C was my favorite
The manual says, that super nice mode is actually made for mastering so yeah, it does the job.
cool! I preferred A , didn't think I would guess the hardware! I thought the plugin would be closer. thanks for this.
i'm glad you enjoyed!
C - Really activated the emotion in me
"But she's always on the ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun"
Got these right. My favorite was "B" the G-Comp because it just glued everything really well. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it seemed thinner than "A". FMR "A" was as a close second because it sounded more clear, thicker, and controlled levels, however it didn't glue as well as "B". The least favorite was "C" setting on the 1773 because it was the least controlled. Thank you for this test.
I’m glad you found it helpful
I understand the super nice mode is supposed to be more transparent, but I think the reason it sounds less controlled is that it's no longer compressing up to 4db like the others. I think the threshold needed to be adjusted when going into that mode no? I don't see the gain reduction meter moving
the RNC without supernice wins overwhelmingly
"C" it is! Thanks for sharing! :)
Awesome...
Glad you enjoyed the video!
how did you connect / wire up the stereo inputs and outputs. I am using logic, rme baby face with behringer dat but I cannot get it to work in stereo.
I was wrong... 1. SSL, 2. RNC 3. Don't know, but thought it should be the RNC.
So I was positive surprised that the SSL was the second one and glad to hear the third one with the "really nice" knob... sensational result - now I'm looking for the best price...🤗
And hey... subscribed...🙃
This nade me very happy to read, thank you
A - nice
B - typical SSL snappy transients with excitement killer (controlled for studio engineers and flat and boring for listeners)
C - really nice
Pretty similar without the "really nice" feature engaged on the RNC. With the magic feature engaged it sounds more open and natural. That said, I think the RNLA would do a better job as a bus compressor.
Graciaaaaasssss
thank you for watching!
Didn’t look at the comments and I REALLY liked compressor A, but then got scared that it was going to be compressor B but was glad I was wrong because I just bought compressor A 😂 sounds AMAZING
I feel like generally the mix is less compressed on the instrument/bus level than what I’m used to hearing and certain frequencies in the drums are less cut out / emphasized than what I’m used to hearing which probably makes the mixbus compressor react differently to how it would with a more polished sounding mix. I would be interested how the comparison would be with a cleaner mix going into it.
A - most energetic
B- felt the most controlled
C - subtle glue
That’s how the test felt for me :)
Thanks for your comment!
Hello, how is the RNC connected from the output of the interface? Does your interface have balanced outs? Are you going directly from the interface balanced outputs to the RNC unbalanced inputs?
Thanks
Output of interface into input of RNC. Out of the RNC back into the interface.
I love the RNC… and would happily pay 10 times the price for one, if it had stepped controls, stereo unlink, balanced i/o, a decent power supply, all in a 1u chassis. I think the RNC sounds better on the 2-buss than my Xpressor… it’s not actually too dissimilar to the Dangerous, in terms of sonics.
I'd honestly like you to A/B a unit that has stepped knobs and one that doesn't... no way on planet earth you're hearing those subtle changes. (I get it... it's like a warm fuzzy blanket knowing EXACTLY how many db you're moving up or down... but seriously... this is where engineers lose me and it starts to become nonsense voodoo that no audience member in a million years will hear.)
Funny. I really hoped that A would be the RNC. :) I liked the plugin the least and your test matches my own experience. I have the RNC in the master bus insert of the Big Six, followed by the Fusion. Just amazing.
Im glad the tests are accurate
@@SoundcastStudios Life feels good when the music sounds good! :)
Definitely C 😇
Comp B was undoubtedly the best of them, followed by an interesting C which imparted a cool vibe. A unfortunately did nothing good, without compression was better. I have one RNC on the way hoped it would be the other way around
Hola! como lo has conectado al DAW?
Hard to beat the SSL even in plugin form. Mainly due to the RNC being too quick I think for mix bus ideally. The VLA is a better affordable mix bus comp IMO
Guessed it because the ssl has a slappy quality on drums.
Cool..... I've got a new interface coming (Motu M4) with better DAC and 2 extra line level inputs that bypass the pre-section. I also have an RNC laying around that I bought years ago for tracking purposes. So it's time to start playing with the RNC as an outboard unit. It doesn't impart a tone of color or anything, but there's something way more 3d and natural in it's dynamic control than the plugin.... I'll have to put it up against the better plugins I have. I'm considering a cheaper opto hardware unit as well. Thanks for the video :)
This makes me very happy to hear. Good luck with everything pal.
I would recommend checking out DIYRE OLA5 compressor. Might be what you’re looking for.
I’ll be making a video about it in a few weeks.
@@SoundcastStudios Thank you :)
And thanks for the videos!
Great Review! I own a Rnc and the Super Nice mode is wonderful! I Use it for live purposes. By the way, did you had any Latency on the RNC compared with no compression at all? If so, how much? Cheers mate
i'm currently making a video for another compressor that i love slightly more, stay tuned for that.
Studio one compensates for any latency with their pipeline plugin so i personally didn't have any latency issues
Soundcast Studios great!! I’ll stay tuned. Do you know when you are going to release that video?
If not today then tomorrow
@@sergiopedroantunes6283 the video is out now
@@SoundcastStudios thanks!! Going to check it later!!! Cheers
No way! I thought "ok, the A is the SSL plugin, better than B that is duller and not glued, who probably is the RNC". If A is the RNC, here I go!!
The ssl sounds thin and more 2D not as wide.. For the money the RNC is great..
It really is a really nice compressor
The RNC destroyed the Waves SSL bus comp plugin and I guess it will destroy any other software comp
I love the punch it added. I can really hear how its affecting the kick.
yep. It kept the sound clean. Software compressor just added a lot of mud. Oh my goodness, how many songs I destroyed with software compressors! :-(
Ha ha, my least favorite was the first one which was the hardware, and my most favorite was the 3rd one, which was the same hardware with the “really nice” button on. I’d like to hear them on a mix…
A: was nice
B: was dull
C: the vocals seemed to be on their own
I think A won...for me.
that's exactly what I thought too!
@@petervad me too
RNC (A) is much better than the plugin (B) to me. Plugin sounds inconsistent and broken in comparison. Between A and C, I prefer A. A brings out more energy for this song.
thanks for your input!
That RNC sounded solid, meaty and confident compared to the plugin. (I sure will be holding on to my RNC's!!) 🙂
C all day, better bass punch
Eventide Misha
Cool , I guess correct..
Wow RNC crushed the waves.
Waves ssl got flat... vocals flattened into the mix and The entire frequency spectrum had an unpleasant phase shift.
RNC is a good compressor!
Example one sounded much better than the raw mix. Example two did not sound as good as example one. Example three seem to introduce a volume increase so it made it hard to determine anything.
Yeah sadly the Really Nice feature on the compressor introduces volume which is hard to compensate for in real time. Luckily you can download the wavs, level match on your own and really hear what it's doing
A AND C WAS MORE OPEN
I guessed the Really Nice (lol) feature because it was louder and not that obvious but I failed to guess the first, hearing the cymbals more metallic I thought it was the plug-in since it didn't have to go through the DA/AD again so sound would be more pure. Though probably youtube degrades enough to hide that, because every time I transform to digital and then back to analog I loose something, even on our more expensive audio devices...Nice video and interesting idea.
Compressor C
A quality hardware compressor is always better because it actually compresses the signal before it goes into the input of your audio interface, the software compressor compresses it after, regardless of how the DAW tries to make it look ‐ that signal is already past the audio interface, forget the DAW showing you it's going through the vst comp 1st, thats a visual lie, your audio interface actually took a non compressed signal which is akin to recording non compressed signal which is bad and can not be properly corrected ever unfortunately.
I'd say please never use that plugin compressor. Ever again. That plugin just adds a lot of mud into the mix. Non-musical kind of mud.
Check out my video of this plugin vs a different company. I’d like to see what you think of them.
@@SoundcastStudios I might. But I've watched enough plug vs hardware videos to convince me not to use plugins such as equalizer and a compressor.
I had to do some level matching through my phones (Sennheiser HD650 through a headphone amp) to get the levels right. I did multiple listens. "A" and "B" I thought both sounded good and I would be happy with either, and "C" I liked the best. It was very subtle between the three to be honest... or at least different flavors that all sounded good. And I leaned towards "B" between "A" and "B". So: (favorite to least) C then B then A. But all sounded good. (and again, B and A really close... maybe A was better?? Idk?? LOL)
