Whats good about the RNC is its a *very* transparent compressor. You dont use one of these if you want "character", its not coloured at all. But thats a GOOD thing. You have a daw, theres plenty of options for colour in the box. What this DOES give you is the ultimate in gain and dynamics control. Stick it between your pre and your interface and you'll end up with the ultimate toolkit for controlling your dynamics and gain. I love my RNC.
Are u going into the heat and then rnc? I like the combo used rather softly while playing. When recording i go from the mixer/interface fx send into heat into rnla into rnc and back into the mixer. Most of the time i use only one fmr but sometimes i like giving it distortion/filter envelope with the heat, fatten it up, sidechain or parallel compress with the rnla and then shape it and maybe give it some breathing with the rnc. A nice combo for sure!
But he is using it on the vocal you are listening to the entire time. You can hear him changing settings from soft to crushed at some point. How did you miss it?
They are still made by a guy in Austin who spends no money on promotion or kick backs . I have been seeing them at major studios for about 20 years. There limiter is really nice too.
Thanks man 🙌 I got some new video ideas that I’m working on that are a little different from what I’m used to doing and I know you guys will enjoy em. Stay tuned
@@TzoHill it's awesome on vocals. i have more hardware compressors Tube Tech CL1b, Teletronix LA2A, Distressor, Pro VLA 2, dgx 160, but the FMR RNC for the Money it cannont be beat, i've had mine for about 11 years i also have more stuff from FMR RNP, FMR RNL, FMR PBC. trust me get it you wont regret it
@@LeyendaProductions wow you've got some amazing hardware would love to have a distressor but out of my budget unfortunately. Is the FNC better then the DBX160 you think cos was looking at that also?
So, with this thing.. do you have to run your mic with an XLR to TRS (1/4) into the RNC 1773 and then a TRS from there to XLR into the interface? or is it just a mix bus compressor?
Hi! I'm using unbalanced ins & outs, but would like to pair the RNC with an RNP via the "Insert" jacks with Y-Cables. Could you make a tutorial on that please?
Thanks man. I bought mine on eBay and shortly after they sold out. I think they may still be on b&h? If not you may have to wait until someone sells theirs on the used market
Cascading ratios....so yeah. And what appears to be a longer release time. Leaving this comment here for anyone who comes across the video. From the RNC manual: A COOL TECHNIQUE A clever technique to reduce compression artifacts is the use of multiple compressors cascaded serially: In this way, none of the individual compressors has to work quite as hard as they would if there was only one compressor doing the same amount of gain reduction. If things are properly adjusted, you can accomplish a good level of signal control without the usual "choked" sound of the typical lone compressor. By the way, this technique works well with almost any type/brand of compressor(s). Try it with the other compressors in your rack! WHEN YOU DANCE TO THE TUNE... There are downsides to using multiple compressors in your rack to achieve this artifact reduction: 1. Lotsa Compressors : For each source, you have to dedicate a number of compressors. Most of us already don't have enough compressors to go around, let alone dedicating 2 or 3 (or more) compressors per track. 2. Lotsa Experience/Patience Required : It takes a lot of experience with compressors to know how to adjust each compressor's settings to achieve the end result. It's already difficult for many of us to set up a single compressor, much less multiple units for just one source. 3. Lotsa Noise : Many compressors, particularly some of the "vintage" ones, don't have very good noise floors. This becomes even more problematic when you want to cascade multiple units. INSIDE THE RNC We considered both the upside and downside while developing the RNC's cascaded-compressor mode, called the SuperNice TM mode. SuperNice mode provides three compressors in series, giving you the advantages of multiple-unit compression without the listed problems: 1. The Lotsa Compressors problem : By creating special sidechain electronics, we're able to triple the compressors in one box without tripling the cost or space. And think about how much you'll save on patch cables! 2. The Lotsa Experience/Patience Required problem : Even though it still takes some time to get used to the novel aspects of SuperNice mode, it takes much less time than trying to Dial Up 5 parameters on 3 separate compressors! To some extent, we've spent the time for you by testing, trying and tweaking the RNC SuperNice mode on a multitude of different sources over a long period of time with many different music styles and recording engineers. The result is the current balance of the 3 SuperNice mode compressors in the RNC. 3. The Lotsa Noise problem : Again, due to the special sidechain electronics, we're able to triple the compressors in one box without tripling the noise. SO...? The best part is: it works great! Spend some time working with SuperNice mode and you'll find yourself using it more and more for vocals, clean guitars, or your program bus.
Could you please make a video to tell us how to connect this FMR RNC 1773 to an old audio interface such as Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 or Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP or any other Focusrite audio interface or RME audio interface? What kinds of cables do we need? How to connect? We really appreciate you very much!
The "really nice" mode changes the detector from simply doing peak detection to mixing in some RMS and averaging in the detection, meaning it won't be as snappy and it'll be a bit more even, not that this is always the best option, since it means more quick thing will slip through that you might want to control with the compressor. I think I'll buy some of these (and the RNLA version), but I was wondering: What happens if you drive the input into the compressor a bit? How does it distort? Does it sound nice?
I pare my RC500 with the Warm Audio tone beast =Awesomeness Also if you ever get the chance demo the WA 87 from warm audio I never brought another mic since.

"Nobody knows about" Well, except like everyone whose ever recorded anything for the last 20+years. FMR RNC has been in the same category as things like the Rode NT1, SM57s, mackie small format mixers, Joe Meek (RIP) channel strips since the mid 90s: the most ubiquitous, low-priced, absurd value-for-money production gear available, which you could routinely find anywhere from Guitar Center to local pawn shops.

To be fair, this one rarely gets talked about compared to the 1176, LA-2A, dbx 160 and Distressors of the world.

From my understanding, if you want to record your mic with the compression on the way in, you need a mic pre before hitting the compressor.
There was no music in this video ? it did a count down but nothing played, was looking forward to hearing this thing in action.
I waited 3 months for the PBC 6A . Love FMR but it is a small company so it takes a while.
