- What's life like after retirement in Singapore? Today I'm following Jimmy Y H Yap, a 72 year-old Singaporean who is enjoying retirement to the fullest. Jimmy Yap was a corporate chief hemming MNCs from Germany, Holland and Sweden, all giants and major players in the global chemical industry. Touted the most hands-on and hardworking chief by his European bosses, he finally retired in 2009.

Hi Kristovfur and all - I started as a Junior staff at German companies. Regional Sales at Dutch company 10 yrs. 20 years Swedish company as MD Asia Pac. No more talking abt past glories since I retired 12 yrs ago. Used to fly Business Class when working now Coach Class for holidays. Those were the days - Be contented !!

After a long day at work and doing household chores, Uncle Jimmy's day reminded me that there's so much more to life. A walk in the park, meals with friends, drinks by the beach and life music!!!! That sure is life!
Haha. Tough to be a retiree ! I SURVIVED 45 yrs with European Chemicals Companies. Prior to that I worked 1 year as a Trainee Hull Fitter in Jurong Shipyard ( owned by IHI of Japan ). Singapore was in a recession in those days.
Honestly, this is more like life of a slightly more well to do Singaporean. Not many can afford such nice apartment and Benz in Singapore...
But he does look like a really nice humble person.
Thanks a million IXAC ! Mine is only 2 bedded 860 sq ft * 80 m2. Half price here in the North vs Caribbean @ keppelbay in the South where my retired friends are living. MOnthly maintenance 40 % lower here. Orchard Rd area u need to multiply price by 3 or 4 times.

Yes, that will be great. About financial planning for retirement for those who are not so well-to-do. At least show us that there is a light at the end of the tunnel in Singapore, not just work and then go straight into the coffin
WAAAH that's a lot of homework for GHIB !!!. Whatever I say will be completely out of date in this modern world. Just be humble, work hard and chase your dreams.

So Happy for your kind comments DARREL. Great you recognized me at Boon Keng Hawker Centre recently. I still owe you a cup of coffee. How I wish we could have a beer together as it's OCTOBER FEST time - Sob Sob. Jamming in the streets to a PUB has to wait ! What a wonderful experience to go filming with GHIB at YISHUN PARK HAWKER CENTRE, OLD AIRPORT HAWKER CENTRE, CHINATOWN COMPLEX AND ZION RIVERSIDE HAWKER CENTRE.

You must be thinking of retirees who are unwell, with health issues. The quality of their retirement lives would be affected and limited.

No hate here, but to all foreigners watching, this is not an accurate depiction of retired life for many Singaporeans. Many elderly live in poverty or suffer from social isolation. Uncle Jimmy is definitely one of the more fortunate few.
But it might be Uncle Jimmy’s friendliness and positivity that got him so far in life. He is really an inspiration to many on how one can have a fulfilling retirement. Stay healthy and happy always Uncle Jimmy!

Uncle Jimmy is such an inspiration! For those who said he could live a retired life like this was because of his money, let me say. You don’t need a Mercedes Benz to get around, you don’t need a grand piano to enjoy music, a condo to enjoy gardening or expensive shoes to enjoy NParks.. etc

Whao.... Jimmy is a fabulous guy. But really not everyone can retired like him. Truly nice to be in his shoes.
90% of singaporeans cannot retire like him . 80% of singaporean may not have more than 1 million dollars in their bank. You should interview people from 3 ,4 or 5 rm flats. You have interviewed the wrong man. Why don't you interview taxi & grab & bus drivers , pump attendants, mechanics, office workers ,forklift operators. Tell the true story of real singaporean but not from this super lucky man. If this man was a bus driver , do you think he wants to be interviewed ? Get real brother ,To have a good life

Almost all doesn't have 4Cs.

This video is very well produced. It's intimate and authentic, something big media companies may have a hard time producing...unless they have a creator and mind like Ghib.

Dear TAMA SAN , Yes the balcony is my favorite spot in the apartment. I liked it more late at night when one feels the cool breeze coming from 2 golf courses and fresh water of Lower Seletar Reservoir.

I'm sure you're aware there are Singaporeans who live in the 'HDB heartland' but drive a Mercedes. Are you sure these heartlanders do not own private property? I'm not familiar.

This man Jimmy whom I discover his singing esp d style of Satchmo or Louis Armstrong that I invited him to perform for my Band Silver Strings 55th Anniversary Concert held on 29th Nov 2019.We then becomes friend n he share with me his Globe trotting to 100 countries n show me some videos for me to comment n advice.
He is very humble though rich but kept a low profile n I was surprised that he was very knowlegable about food, street esp his area Killiney Rd where I supply a band to Shindig Niteclub in d 70s n myself I performed with my band Silver Strings at Hotel Malaysia (MarcoPolo) Tropicana, n Wisma Indonesia etc during d 60s.Jimmy is a walking encylopedia Congrats

Yes, Jimmy had worked his way up the corp ladder just like 1 of my friends who was an MD before he retired about 40 yrs ago. He bought 2 landed properties when prices were relatively cheap during that time & now his properties are worth millions & he can retired in style. These are the people who planned well ahead instead of gambling away their hard-earned money like some of the people in Singapore.

From sales only for the Singapore market initially I was so fortunate to win the trusts of my Bosses to let me cover the Asia Pacific region. Yes I got a lot of good advices from friends in the business, colleagues to valued customers along the way.

This was my first direct encounter with Ghib Ojisan’s video & it was all impromptu with a call from my friend Jimmy last Sat when he asked me where I was. So he headed down over to Constant Wind Seasports Centre where I was having a drink with a friend. I met Ghib for the first time & volunteered to show him around the place where I windsurf regularly & offered to buy a round of drinks at Stella, the beach bistro. Michael Boon the owner of Stella happened to be around & he joined us too - drinks were finally on him as he refused to let us pay. It was amazing to see how Ghib was able to singlehandedly do all the shooting - including turning his camera around to do his occasional selfie shots - with the “script” in his mind & eventually edited & posted a video as though it was all pre-planned & orchestrated. I was told by Jimmy that he’s a very successful one-man show UA-camr with a good following of viewers both in Spore & Japan. Must be his creative talent though his easy-going down-to-earth style must surely feature in his success.

Hello again Stella ! Despite COVID, 2 of the HAPPY MOMENTS for me this year : Meeting GHIB in end Feb at Killiney Rd Kopitiam at 67 Killiney Rd. This led me to be kept busy " playing " the role of a TOUR GUIDE to GHIB. Learning to sing Pop Jazz style since July this year. Haha - Stella was impressed that GHIB asked the Mother of Philip ( who lives in the condo as me ) : HAVE YOU EATEN IN TEOCHEW DIALECT ? This is translated literally from Chinese ( Mandarin to Teochew Dialect as Have you taken yr meal as a greeting ).
Candidly, nowadays we asked people HAVE U GOT YR VACCINATION yet ?
