The reason we do it in Europe is we are only allowed a 13.6m (45ft) semi trailer but with a drawbar configuration you can get a total loading length of 15.6m giving you an extra 2m or 6ft6 of space, swap bodies are a solution that can make the drawbar configuration almost as flexible as a semi trailer in the way you can switch them and they can also be put on trains I.E. this is a solution to a problem the US doesn't really have North America's trucks I find very inefficient for a number of reasons, this is not one of them
This is fairly redundant in the UK as we have 'longer semi trailers' or LSTs with a 2+1 axle configuration meaning they can fit in the normal turning circle while being 15.6m long We also are allowed 16ft3 tall trailers so even a 13.6m long trailer can fit 44UK pallets or 56 euro pallets that are all 1.9m tall, all while using a 6x2 truck with a 1250mm high 5th wheel (it does allow for kind of lazy engineering though)
