As a candlepin bowler, that frame where the 2 pins fell late for the strike even surprised me. While every house is different and every set of pins has different wear levels on the caps, those rolling woods didn't seem hard or fast enough to knock those pins down in (I'd say) 90% of the lanes I've bowled at. But there are always some houses where that would be enough. :) Good experiment to watch for sure! Very cool.
We candlepinners are jealous that you won't be getting any spread eagles or half Worcesters with that ball. Spread eagle=2,4,7 & 3,6,10 (1,5,8,9 punched out) Half Worcester= punch out either 2,8 or 3,9. Yes, those punch outs are very common and can knock the wind out of our sails when we get into a groove.
I enjoyed this. First, you're a good ten pin bowler, so that helped make this interesting, 2nd, that third strike, while not a "no-doubter", happens to us, on occasion. Not every strike in candlepin is a hammer. 3rd, the strikes dried up! What happened? Lol. I appreciate the respectful comments you made about the difficulty of candlepin. How do we keep our frustration level down? It comes with years of experience. After a while, you'll see everything, good and bad, and won't be too surprised by it. You just have to shake off the bad breaks and keep grinding. The breaks even out, over time, and keeping that in the back of your mind helps keep things in perspective. It's not an easy game. A 120 average is considered elite. Anything over 130 is other-worldly. I'd like to see you throw a string using candlepin balls (at candlepins). That 183 might look really good to you afterwards.
You need to try and get your hands on a German 9 pin bowling ball. They’re bigger than a candle pin ball but still smaller than a regular 10 pin ball. Some also have holes for the middle finger and thumb.
I've been waiting to see this since you did the Candlepin Ball vs. Tenpin Pins video, the results were not what I expected, I thought it would have been easier than it was. I figured with a ten pin bowler of your level it would have been strike after strike after strike. Thanks for tackling this one - puts Candlepin's all time high game of 245 into perspective (scored by Chris Sargent in 2014/2015-ish).
Candlepin is a very difficult version of bowling no one has ever got a perfect game in candlepin. The game was created by a guy who said regular 10 pin was to hard and he thought small ball narrow pins would be easier.
It may be more difficult to score really high but I like to take my neighbor's children bowling and the heavy balls are a struggle for them. The lighter balls give people with less strength a chance to enjoy themselves. I badly wish I could take them candlepin bowling but on my budget I cannot drive them 2000 miles to the nearest lane of that type.
Watched all the videos with the plastic toy pins, duck pins, and candle pins, and the first thought that came to mind is you need to try and get Osku Palermaa to throw his rocket ball at them once to see if he could break any.
So many small differences between the games as well. Fun little fact: the pin deck in candlepin is actually slightly lower than the lane itself. So an average candlepin throw results in the ball hitting the pins while airborne.
I seen a man pick up the sour Apple next to me. I was on approach after him on the right lane, I made the mistake of sticking my hand out for a 5 and hit hit my hand so hard he about torn it off. Lol
As I'm writing this I'm on vacation up in Laconia,NH. While up here ill drip into Finally for a little spring training, if you know what I mean. Since last season ended with a bad throwing arm,I won't even pick up a ten pin ball. So far,so good no pain.
3:15 Literally the slowest strike ever in the history of bowling! "Got to hit this perfect, there is no room for error." Sounds like a normal league night of bowling for 90 rpm rev rate me. 😂
Fun! When I was a kid I would sometimes use a toy tenpin set ball, and set paper towel rolls as candlepins and called it 'candletens". I grew up bowling candlepin in MA til moving to Ohio. Fun video, along with yours using duckpins and the candlepin ball at tenpin pins. Next time if you try a candlepin ball at tenpin pins, try using the candlepin rule of leaving the deadwood on the deck. That would make for some very odd pin action on spares I'm sure!
@brunsnick be a cool video either way... maybe do something crazy challenge with a ball like the double hooking ball or your every hand equipment. And of course, straight up
I want to see an experiment done where they do regular bowling but with this rule of candlestick bowling: After the first shot the down pins are NOT scooped up. That means if you are unlucky your spare might be blocked by a fallen pin preventing normal spare shot or you might be able to knock fallen pin(s) to get your spare like candlepin. This experiment would be even more interesting with the slightly heavier "gold" bowling pins as they would roll less and be more likely to get in the way.
I guess with a 10-pin bowling ball, its less hard then with a candlepin ball. And the candlepins will promise funny spare combinations and weird movement. Maybe its easier to spare because they dont remove deadwood after a Throw. Cant wait!
Candlepin lanes are the same lengths, widths, and pin spots. The candlepin lanes don't have deep channels. Some houses, especially in eastern Canada, their almost flat.
Love the video, as always. I have a question - Could you do a video on how to practice on *DRY* lanes? I've been bowling on Sunday nights, and I'm getting whiplash standing far left, and tying to throw right. I'll throw my Radioactive Vibe. I can hit the 5 board, and it still manages to hit 5-board, but I've seen it cross over :(
Seeing that leave in the 10th i kinda wonder how this would look with the lightest house ball or the one you drilled for the spinner release video (if it didnt go to the ball breaker) We'll just pretend deflection means extra carry, definitely true
i'm a candlepin bowler and always wanted to try it and threaten my other league bowlers with it but it would probably wreck the pinsetter machine and also get thrown off the premises. plus tenpin bowling balls are scarce in my area.

I have another idea: KOMI bowling. "Komi" is a term in the Asian game of GO where if one player starts with an advantage a certain number of compensation points is given to the opponent. In "Komi" go one player is given a handicap but unlike traditional handicap bowling both players are considered close enough in skill where a handicap is not normally warranted (but here it is). One player gets to choose what the handicap will be and the OTHER player then decides whether or not they want to have the handicap or let their opponent have it. Whoever gets the handicap has to bowl an entire game with the slightly heavier gold colored pins and the player without the handicap has to bowl on the standard white pins. What handicap would you pick?
@@brunsnick then the player if it was you might choose 10. It would be interesting because there would be strategy on whether to pick the handicap or not or what handicap to set if you are the one assigned for that.
Hey nick. Could we get a ball with hk22 cohesion and gold...kinda like the widow xr gold... maybe the effect 24k, or a new asym ball called the golden turkey...please and thank you
Few things. I can't wait to see you try a traditional Candlepin string, with a real ball. I'm willing to bet that your score will be under 90. Not because of you,its the lane setup. Candlepin lanes have very shallow, almost flat channels. Some houses have steel pin plates. Both for pin action. I'm guessing your ball speed it around 20 mph. Pro candlepin bowlers can reach into the 40+ mph range. Our game is more like billiards. Your ball can be off ever so slightly, and weird things happen. Firing A first ball down at a full rack,if your off slightly that's the difference in getting a hammer strike,or just blunking either the 2 or 3 pins alone. We also slightly different rules. And 6 feet from the foot foul line is a lob line, the ball must land before that line. A dead wood line is about a foot forward of the head pin spot. If anything pin rolls forward past that line,it must be removed. Hitting dead wood in the channel is a foul. Remember kids, candlepin bowling is actually older than traditional ten pin. Because our game is a game of fractions of an inch, there has never been a perfect game yet. 245 is so far the highest.
Since each candlepin weighs a pound less, a modern tenpin ball goes through them as if the ball is more like 21 lbs. Lol. A "real ball" is a yellow dot, OG crown jewel, black beauty, magnum 10, ebonite gemstone, Star Trak MSG, LT-48 Rock, etc.

6:33 is very telling. The small pin diameter makes a decent hit catch a shallow angle of the head pin, so it barely grazes the 2.
