I keep re-reading her book, hoping her "grit" will rub off on me! Tremendous cyclist, and an excellent writer, translating what we all MIGHT feel but can't articulate, into poetry. Love it...write again!
A lovely chat. We've just come back from a camping tour on the tandem doing National Cycle Route 7 (our Honeymoon!), and were both discussing pretty much exactly what Emily suggested. Enjoying the ride and eating more :D I'm starting to see more and more why endurance riders tend to be older compared to other athletes now. That mental fortitude, and just rolling through the highs and lows seems to come easier with age? Perhaps you need that memory bank of "Oh, well this isn't as bad/cold/windy/hilly as *that* ride".
Katie, I think she inspired you and you inspired so many of us! Especially those like us who started cycling during the pandemic, loved this sport and carrying on because it is just so much fun! Just wanted to thank you for your great tips about endurance that saved us bonks and other issues and other advice such as having a bike fit with Phil, Proviz, clothing, Zwift and more - it is admirable to see you riding this far! Thank you :)
thanks for sharing. as an educator its often hard to remember how little conversations and advice can make such a big difference to someone with less experience, so keep it all coming.
Emily is a fantastic cyclist. It’s seeing how women have done so well and more importantly the style of riding and the consistency to training. That got me to enter my first Ultra starts tomorrow. And a second from Sheffield on 3rd June. And the last one will be the NorthCape4000. No idea at all what the final results will be. But watching people like Emily simply keep going is a key enabler for me.
Great interview with an amazing rider. Emily has accomplished so much and inspired so many. So have you. I think that you underestimate the positive influence that you have on the cycling community. That's because you are humble and modest, but in a very good way. That personal characteristic makes you so likeable and believable. You are a great inspiration to me personally as you share your experiences and suggestions. You are a catalyst to get me riding. Thank you, my friend,.
After watching this video I went to sainsburys, purchased the cheese, salted cashews, salami and jelly babies. Chopped and mixed it all up for fuel. It was a great tip from Emily, It enabled me to ride my first 215km ride today!
Thank you Katie for this interview. It prompted me to read Emily's second book and discover a new world of endurance cycling. I have enjoyed the book very much (Emily is a 1st class writer) but it left me with few questions about this discipline. Sleep deprivation is not normal; when one deprives another from sleeping for a week, it is called torture, but when a cyclist does it to herself it is called endurance cycling. I would never ever ask my friend to drive her car for 7+ days sleep deprived, but somehow this is perfectly fine for the race organizer to allow. It is a pure miracle that there are no more injuries and fatalities along the way. I wonder how long will it have to take, how many lives to be lost until there is a rule-based endurance ride, with a minimum of 6 hours of contiguous sleep (4 REM phases) is mandatory? One may argue that this would make it "less interesting" and no different from typical races, but to me this is a no-brainer. Keep the crazy distances all you wish, but please introduce some common sense based on scientific evidence of sleep deprivation. Still, as one far away from those distances and sleepless nights, I can only admire modern gladiators on their way to glory or self-destruction.
watching your videos made me want to get back on the bike. I haven't been riding for about 3 years now due to moving to a new area and being nervous about riding on unfamiliar streets but it's a bug I can't shake!
One key thing that Emily brought out is if you aren't having fun, why are you doing what you are doing? You have enough stuff to put up with, why add to it while you are out doing something you don't have to. If you ever wonder why e-bikes are outselling everything else, this is why.
Thank you Katie for your hearted comment . I am cycling quite a bit this year on my Mercian . It's far from the Audax journeys that you are doing but I am going to try a small longer distance run when the weather improves . I have made one or two very short video's myself which make use of my Mac Pro editor and then onto Utube . Small cycle travelogues . They are allowing me to learn more on video etc . Keep up your amazing journeys ! Brett .
Thanks for your videos Katie, they really inspire me to go further both mentally and physically. I am currently training for Lejog in June and doing really well thanks to your tips and advise. I used to live in your neck of the woods and rode ashy valley/ edenfield weekly, now living on the edge of the dales so spoilt for choice. Stay safe and humble as always :-)
I read her book courier book after meeting an Aus cycle tourist who met her (while I was also out cycle touring in Wales). The Aus cyclist said she got great route advice from her. Reading her book, wow, she is some cyclist! Just noticed she has a new book out too!
Thanks for the insight. The keyword is "enjoyment," which is a personal decision. Neither my duvet nor I are there today. Maybe the 2nd Tuesday of next week. Warmest regards.
Two inspirational ladies ❤️ thankfully, there are more and more amazing role models for everyone being recognised and given the opportunity to inspire. When complete ‘sporting’ parity is reached across the globe, the human race will be in a very good place. Proper Grand tours, ‘monuments’ and other road races for women and 5 set Tennis matches at grand slams. Equal reward for these should be a given too!
Oh your much more than just the Audaxer. Remind us again who out of the two of you is QOM Buckstones. Maybe you could give Emily some advice on hill climbing. You Katie are an absolute machine 💪💪💪
Emily is so cool! I think I’ll try salted cashews next ride, but skip the cheese. I’ve been to that very Soho Rapha last time I was in London (pre-pandemic unfortunately so it’s been a moment).
I did a 50 mile endurance ride on Friday, from Croydon to Eastbourne. The worst thing about it was my gearing was too high: it's a single chainring of 40 in the front and 11-30 in the back. Then my shoes are a narrow fit size 43. I know I need to change these to a wide 42, even if it means making do with mountain-bike type shoes. The pins-and-needles got so bad at times, I was forced to peddle down on my heals.
That’s how we learn what works - I had to reduce my handlebar width when I started upping the distance as they were too wide. It’s all good and learning what works :)
Katie, I really like your teeth, they look healthy strong and white, what kind of product do you use to maintain them well or what kind of tips do you recommend?
Just reminded me seeing you riding up the Edgware Road, years ago there used to be a pro road race that left from Marble Arch and finished in ..........Holyhead ! one day race, something for you to try ?
How do you deal with the anxiety of long endurance solo rides? Every time I plan a new big route I always get the fear of thinking "What if I break down and can't fix my bike, how will I get home if I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere".
I think the anxiety of having a crash, being hit by a vehicle, being ribbed or having a life threatening medical emergency is s real dear for many solo travellers.
Think I made the same face as you when she mentioned her go to snack. That sounded horrific. You do love your KM's don't you lol. Cheers for the content 😊
Some pro cyclists est foods many wouldn't ever think they'd eat. I saw a vid of Alberto Contador having a sandwich with what look like a pound of fatty leg ham in it. I guess it works for him.
i have to saythis if you dont mind, I've been an instructor for over 20 from the forces to now on civel street and injuding racing. and there is one thing I have say witch is kind of against instructors ish. if you a man or woman and you really want to learn then learn off a woman who does know something, reason why I say this is because SIMPLE IS THEY LISTEN AND LEARN MEN DONT. in all the classes I thought in men and women all men say of I've ridden for years I know everything...... a woman will listen to every single detail and do it, a man will jump on it then crash it??? then I say been ridding for years mate know everything you do lol... and that is why I'm watching Katie etc etc with women because they will listen and find out.
Does YT recommend videos to anyone else about actual Kookaburras after watching Katie's? I've learned more about this particular cheeky bird than I ever thought I would 😂Also in TIL, Google Maps speaks British English!
I keep re-reading her book, hoping her "grit" will rub off on me! Tremendous cyclist, and an excellent writer, translating what we all MIGHT feel but can't articulate, into poetry. Love it...write again!
Emily's book was one the best written books I have read on cycling. The mix of emotion, humanity turn it from a history to a beautiful story.

This was a fabulous video.
I love your channel.
Thank you.

Any discussion that encourages people to go a little further is well worth the while !
Love it! So glad to be able to have a Steezy Crew down to watch and learn some endurance secrets!
Fun + Food = Recipe for success! Thanks for sharing that informative and inspirational talk.

Marvelous interview, and another perspective of suffering, or avoiding it. Take Emily to see Larkin Poe!

You should check out Cruzbike. A good bike for you would be the Cruzbike V20C Vendetta.
Please make merch so we can support the channel! I'd buy some Kookaburra arm warmers!!!
That’s funny that Rapha’s London location is in Soho because it’s also in Soho in NYC
wonderful but turn that vis ad screen off

Enjoyable discussion.
Lovely lady, I watched her dot in the TC and then years later was lucky enough to meet her on the tour of Wessex.
Big day today for the tour 😀

Would have loved to have seen you Tim!!! Next time eh?
