- A playthrough of Sega's 1994 versus-fighting game for the Sega 32X, Cosmic Carnage.
Played through as Cylic on the normal difficulty level. Fatalities and the good ending are shown.
I remember this game getting panned pretty hard by magazines when it came out, but I've always been rather partial to it. It looks much better (technically, at least) than anything on the SNES or the base Sega Genesis, with a cool scaling zoom (a la Samurai Shodown) that shifts based on the distance between the fighters, and there are some cool pseudo-3D effects with some moves when a leg or a foot get bigger based on how close to the "camera" they come. It's also pretty nicely violent, with blood spraying in huge quantities when you take someone's head off. It's not all daisies, since some of these effects cause some pretty ugly slowdown, but the animation looks great.
The sound is also pretty good - sure, it could've been done nearly identically on the Genesis, but the soundtrack is pretty catchy and full of dance-music style bass. I also really dug the sci-fi theme. I did find myself wishing for a few voice samples, though.
The gameplay is fairly unique in itself. Though the moves are all basic Street Fighter II style command inputs, you can change your character with different strengths of armor for their legs, arms, and torso, and each of these choices will, in addition to changing the obvious speed and power of the character, will change which special moves are available during the fight. The fatalities are all super graphic, but unfortunately, there aren't many of them, and they are the same between each character. Finally, the ending you get it determined by how long it takes you to get through the game - if you take too long beating everyone, the countdown will finish before you can escape. If that happens, c'est la vie. You finish the game, but you don't really win.
Cosmic Carnage is nothing revolutionary, but it is a solid title if you want a fun (albeit generic) original fighter for the 32X. It looks and plays better than the 32X Primal Rage port, even if it doesn't match up to the quality of Mortal Kombat II and WWF The Arcade Game.

The ORIGINAL Naruto. :P
BELIEVE IT!
Eternally underrated fighter with visuals that the Genesis/Mega-Drive couldn'tt accomplish on its own...
well, yeah, i mean obviously that's why it's a 32x game
@@JP47471 plenty of 32X games were barely above what a genesis could do, and in many ways were worse
Genesis alone could do sprite scaling, rotation, 3d while 32x is just colour enhancing.
There has no doubt that its soundtrack is amazing. Ah, and its gore is also fantastic.
The gore is even better in the Japanese version because 2 of the fighters are human

Chimera*
I bought this game today without knowing what it was. Was the only 32x game at the pawn shop so I grabbed it.
This game was amazing, I don't know why people hate on it so much. Maybe it was too short, but that's all I can think of.
For a 32x launch title, it didn't really show off the power of the system very well, and there's like occasional slowdown which is likely due to the sprite scaling. I wouldn't say it's bad, just nothing special.
Impressive visuals and audio, it's just the controls that suck.
@@joeyjo-joshabadu9636 except for the fact that they don't
@@Kaius.but it wasn’t launch title for the 32x
U played it through like a pro,mate.
Great job!
will jace Thanks!
Cosmic Carnage is a hyper-violent bit of 2D fighting action, and though it's a bit on the generic side, it plays pretty well!
NintendoComplete I felt the exact way about this game when it came out. I got this game when I bought my 32x when it came out and everyone that played it with me thought it was bad except me lol! Did you ever try playing Cyber Brawl, the Japanese version of this game? I didn't know until recently it was a code you can enter in this game
During the intro, hold X, B, and Z at the same time and hit Start.
Isaac Lee I did, I remember seeing the code in a Game Players issue way back in 94/95 :)
It doesn't even need a code. Grab a hex edtior and at 1F0 offset type 4A and leave the rest to 20, save as XYZ.md and it automatically loads the japanese ROM's contents.
NintendoComplete Anyone know how man 32x games for N.A?
I was trying to remember this game lol it isnt amazing gameplay wise but they had alot of cool ideas and other parts of the game like music, visuals, camera stuff etc were solid. I could imagine this game concept being redone
This game could have be an arcade also but nope

Just LISTEN to this midi gold!
This playthrough has been approved by LORD KARNAGE!
The music, the sound effects. They sound just like the ones used in the Sega Genesis version of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.
Same composer. Hikoshi Hashimoto.
These sound are from power rangers movie on sega Genesis
Cosmic carnage is came out November 21st,1994!
Fun game, not up to some peoples standards at the time, but I remember enjoying it a lot. Just needed a bit more polishing, but was probably pushed by Sega to be released A.S.A.P.. Gaming Historian had a video on the 32x which mentions something about this.
I'm surprised this game was rated T...
It's pretty brutal...
The ESRB also gave Heart of Darkness an E rating, so those ratings weren't always reliable.
32X is carazy.
One thing that I find weird about this game is how it's way easier to make the military characters dizzy than the criminal characters.
Who are the criminal characters
@@lazyhead9071
Military characters:
Cylic, Zena-lan, Naruto, Tyr
Criminal characters:
Yug, Naja, Daemon, Talmac
I remember this. I liked this game, but I don't really remember being able to pull off too many special moves.
Not the best fighter but it's a decent one that's exclusive to the 32X so it's worth a look at least!
Is it just me or does the floor in Yug's stage kinda look like a concept doodle of what the floor was supposed to look like? This game was rushed so that might be the case.
What did this game do that a genesis couldn't? I'm guessing sprite scaling and that's it.
I'd say the backgrounds look more detailed and with more colors than on a Genesis game, the same goes for the sprites. Even with all that, this game doesn't look very good.
Resolution and color.
I played it since I been defeated 😞
What they were thinking?
The disparity between the premise and the gameplay is shockingly disappointing. Reading the summary at the start, it sounds like you would be picking one of four characters in an action/adventure fighting your way through a military ship (and against time) to try to get to the escape pods... which is an insanely cool idea.
But no. Just a 2d fighter.
The slowdown is what ruins the game for me since it disrupts the flow of the fighting. This should not have been included at all. What's worse is that the beta version showed the lack of slowdown.
Man....and I thought Shaq Fu was bad....new level here.
It definitely plays better than Shaq Fu. The controls are better. I actually liked Cosmic Carnage :)
