I have driven and owned Turbo 6s. I have also driven and owned 2 V8 Commodores. Im not one of these guys that is either Ford or Holden. If I drive them and like them thats all that matters. So I know how to drive both. Last weekend I decided to drive the Stinger. Well what can I say, I was happily surprised, not only was it very fast (V8 beating) but it was also a great car to drive. It was involving and seriously just a dead set great car to be in. Build quality was easily on par with a VFII, and I know some people are undecided but it looks great too. For all the nae sayers, all I can say is drive it.
@David R it delivers 510Nm from 1300Rpm all the way to 5700Rpm. Linear is good when you have so much of it down low in the rev range, that's the beauty of it, no need to wait for the revs to build up.
@David R Then again, you don't need to get up too high in the rev range. Make the torque do all the work. For your comment about 510Nm at 1300, that is a measured unit at 1300rpm and yes at wot. But like you said, about spooling, in this case I disagree. At 1300 revs, it makes & is measured at 510nm, and the Nagasaki noisy boys must be spooling at that RPM to deliver 510nm. The turbos on the Stinger are tiny, I would estimate them to be smaller than 100mm in diameter ( at a guess ). I own a Stinger and a 430whp R33 GTR. The GTR turbos are massive compared to the stinger. Also the GTR needs at least 4500rpm before anything happens, and then all hell breaks loose. It's all about making the car streetable and what RPM is used with daily driving. I was that impressed with the Stinger test drive that I bought one.
@David R as a comparison with my GTR, the Stinger was much easier to drive powering through the twisty hilly road of Macquarie Pass. It was just effortless. The GTR really needed to be kept high in the rev range where as I found with the Stinger it really didn't make much difference even being in the wrong gear, it just powered through. One thing that's really scary with the Stinger, is that it's so quiet that speed creeps up on you without realising it. I would of thought that your XR6 with that torque would have been awesome to drive. i just wish my GTR had more torque for those nasty hill starts.
@David R regarding the number of gears, I cannot remember where I read it, but some auto engineer said that 9 gears would be the absolute max number of gears. probably because ratios are getting too close and the added mass doesn't pay off. I hope you find your ideal drive. The other reason why we ended up with the Stinger is the wife is able to drive it without it being too stupidly overpowered and streetable. Enjoy.

I really love ❤️ 😍 Holden VE and VF Commodore in SS and SSV trims of course, I have been in my cousin's VF SSV Redline and I loved it, the V8 noise and I'm not even Australian, we don't have these where I'm from and it's a real shame that Holden no longer makes these Beautiful works of art anymore, in fact I was sad when I heard this news. 😢

I own a ssv redline and i've driven my bosses kia stinger. The only complaint i have about the stinger is that it has a weak top end but otherwise it's an absolutely awesome car and would recommend to anyone

Yet on the weekend past I took the Kia Stinger GT for a test drive. To say that I was impressed was an understatement. Not only was it comfier to sit in, it felt smoother on the road and faster. The quality of the interior was considerable better than I had imagined it would be and it was just a really nice place to sit. Bottom line, deposit paid. Pretty darn good first attempt at making a performance car, Kia. To be competitive with a highly established muscle car made in Aussieland, is quite a big thing to achieve. Holden sounds better, but Kia (in my opinion) is better in every other way...from personal experience, not just videos on the internet.

Caradvice has Kia better accelerating car than commodore.... easier to launch as it’s got launch control, better braking and better slalom .... better handling. .... and unlike this article from drive, they have videos of this tests.... I think this test by drive is biased towards the Holden ... you can tell by the language used by the tester.

I don't think this is a fair comparison tbh. Stinger with a 3.3L Turbo V6 and Commodore with a 6.2L V8. If you were to compare the stinger with a SV6 it would have been better and Stinger would beat it. But an SSV Redline V8, come on that aint fair for the Stinger.
Ben Chesterman since it’s the end of the commodore, in 10 years a VF series 2 will most likely cost over $25k and you will be able to pick up a 10 year old Kia for under 15, both easily over 100,000kms. Just my opinion

I based the $15k on the fact that this is Kia’s first performance car, who knows how many things will go wrong, and owning a Kia is nothing to boast about yet until they make a name for themselves in the performance car market.
Kia replaced the exhaust in updated versions sounds better but still not a v8. Gt stinger is far away much better car for sure but Holden is not as refined Kia feels lot more expensive.

I have driven the Stinger GT, you can turn the traction control and the stability control off by holding it in. Having said that, I can also do it on my wife’s Sorento, but it still wants to stop me from doing donuts in the snow.

Brent Ratcliffe, you really want to get your facts right, as it was GM US that canned Holden, as GM have also shut down some of it’s other manufacturers across the world. GM US went bankrupt and the US government helped them out so GM had to trim some of it’s fat so to speak. Holden were just merely following orders from it’s parent company GM.

I'm a kiwi and a euro car guy but the last of the commies and fords are so so good. Such a sad day. The Kia is cool, awesome tech and still loads of fun but does not give me the same buzz. And no I don't like the current crop of BMWs and Audis, to much tech. The Americans are making some of my most wanted cars now, the GT350R, Camaro ZL1 LT1, Viper etc and of course Lotus.....they are the ultimate raw drivers cars in my opinion

I based the $15k on the fact that this is Kia’s first performance car, who knows how many things will go wrong, and owning a Kia is nothing to boast about yet until they make a name for themselves in the performance car market.

far away much better car for sure but Holden is not as refined Kia feels lot more expensive.

I have driven the Stinger GT, you can turn the traction control and the stability control off by holding it in. Having said that, I can also do it on my wife’s Sorento, but it still wants to stop me from doing donuts in the snow.

Brent Ratcliffe, you really want to get your facts right, as it was GM US that canned Holden, as GM have also shut down some of it’s other manufacturers across the world.
GM US went bankrupt and the US government helped them out so GM had to trim some of it’s fat so to speak.
Holden were just merely following orders from it’s parent company GM.

ZB Commodore or shall I say Vauxhall (or Opel) Insignia will replace the rear drive VF Commodore. Oh dear! Looks like rear drive Commodore fans may have to consider a Kia Stinger. Even a 4 cylinder turbo base model is no slouch!

I'm a kiwi and a euro car guy but the last of the commies and fords are so so good. Such a sad day. The Kia is cool, awesome tech and still loads of fun but does not give me the same buzz. And no I don't like the current crop of BMWs and Audis, to much tech. The Americans are making some of my most wanted cars now, the GT350R, Camaro ZL1 LT1, Viper etc and of course Lotus.....they are the ultimate raw drivers cars in my opinion

The Kia Stinger is beautifully shaped , more technology , faster from 0-100klmh , more safety features , interior is superior , a real head turner/ love it. The SS is a ordinary looking sedan , interior is prehistoric with a punchy noise when throttling it only , this dude needs to go back to Specsavers ....very biased ) :
