I bought the aluminium ADV 8.9 black two months ago. I'm 72 and having ridden over 9000 miles on my Crossfire e-bike I needed a bike with a low gear for hill climbing. I also wanted hydraulic disc brakes and a bike that could take me away from busy main roads. The Boardman was very well equipped for the price compared to competitors. I ditched the awful supplied pedals immediately and fitted a pair of resin MTB pedals. After a few rides I also changed the saddle for a gel foam one with a cut out which was much more comfortable and added detachable SKS Speedrocker mudguards to cope with the winter weather. I only have the e-bike to compare the Boardman to but so far I'm loving it. It handles very well on and off road and the geometry suits my age and experience better than a road bike.
@@KoenMiseurI often ask myself why people buy a gravel bike to fit big tyres, effectively turning it into a 90s Mtb. Like we have a solution to this problem and it’s called an XC bike.
That's a decent price point for a carbon GRX 2 by gravel bike. Not sure about running the cables into the down tube that way, as it might interfere with a frame bag, but things like a standard bar/stem and standard clamps are nice. Quite light for a gravel with aluminum wheels too. Still don't regret getting the Revolt Advanced 2 on sale for nearly that price. Has the flip chip for very wide tires, which I think more brands could do.
I bought an ADV9.0R which is the same frame, fork and wheels but with 12 speed 105 and 32mm tyres. For my first road bike i felt £1300 was a great price on discount at halfords and its so far serving me very well. The 42mm tyre clearance might not be getting much use as a summer road bike but part of me is very tempted to pop a set of 38mm slick gravel tyres on it for dry winters day riding and to allow me to run on less than perfect bike paths.
Met Chris Boardman on his ride to Paris this year, he was riding this bike I believe. Really nice looking. I would like the flat bar gravel bike, think it looks really cool!
Pleasant surprise to see my Boardman CX Team on screen. Still going strong, it was originally £1,000 and only 900g heavier than the new bike you feature.
I bought the Aluminium Boardman CX with carbon forks off FB market place for £250. It does the ‘gravel’ thing for me and used more than my pricier full carbon mtb and road bike as its more versatile for 90% of riding.
Me as well, the 8.9 Carbon a couple of weeks back too . I'm trying to resist the urge to upgrade stuff straightaway but I have swapped out the stock 335g seat post with a 132g carbon seat post (20 quid from AliExpress, delivered in 8 days). I wasn't impressed by the brakes which I put down to the budget Shimano RT26 resin only rotors and resin pads. Luckily I had some nearly new Clarks CL rotors in my parts bin which have improved things. I'll replace the resin pads when they wear out with ceramic ones. I don't find the Prologo Akero saddle very comfy so that'll be next to go and I'll stop there. Although there are mounting points for permanent mudguards, I got the SKS Speedrockers that I can put on when needed as they look good but boy are they are a pita to fit.
I’d really appreciate a “How Does It Feel” rating?? All these reviewers keep trying to push quality based on marginal gains of watts.. But the vast majority of road/gravel cyclists just want a really fun bike to ride!! So please start rating ride feel!
42 mm clearance, What the actual F where they thinking, it should at least be 45mm and 50mm is even better! I would pick the Cube Nuroad C:62 Pro 2025 over this bike any day, even if it's about €100 more! Same groupset but with a 48x31 and 11-36 gearing, also carbon wheels and 50mm clearance!
Boardman is not a Halfords bike. They only sell through Halfords. They also used to sell through Tredz, but if you have any issues, Boardman and Halfords customer service is really very good. I owned the 2021 8.9 ADV and was so impressed with it, and now I have the 8.9E ADV, and that is amazing fun and brilliant valuev too.
2k? Cheap? Doesn't entice many to get a carbon gravel bike. I think that this is why the industry is struggling. We probably need to go back back to basics to encourage people into the pastime/sport.
The drive train is about as gravel as my fill squish is road bike. I see no value, I see compromise and a boat load of bits that need swapping out adding to the build cost and creating waste.

Kudos for Boardman for listening to the customer on features and price. Looks great.
Did they? Who would buy a gravelbike with 42mm clearance, heck there are allroad bikes with almost the same clearance!
@@KoenMiseur the ADV & TRVL can take up to 50mm wide tyre. Perhaps check the specs first, eh.

I like how your clothing changes over time are slowly making you look more and more like Jeremy Clarkson.

Agree about the “Adventure” term, same applies for here in NL.
No silly integrated cockpit and headset cable routing make this a win to me

I had the older 2022 8.9 adv was a good bike felt very much like old school MTB geometry spec for the money was bang on.
I have been on carbon for 15yrs MTB and road. Never had a problem. However i did crack and break 4 Aluminium frames in the past.
Would be nice to know if UDH and frame weight for future videos if possible.
I’m considering getting the ADV 8.9 in orange I currently have a carrera Vulcan don’t quite want a road bike but want to go faster
I think the Cube nuroad c62 pro ist the better Option. You get Carbon frame, wheels with grx 2by and a Carbon gravel bar
I hope it's good, I've just bought an adv 9.0😊
Brought an 8.9 a few weeks ago excellent bike for the money.

Agree about the saddle going to drop it by another 15mm if that doesn’t work I switch it out in new year.
This is not cheap when you consider you can buy an Alloy GRX 2x12 Felt from Merlin cycles for £999.
Seems to me my old hard tail mountain bike from the 90s it would do most things this adventure bike does.
Bought mine last Christmas(adv 9.0)superb bike for the money and lovely to ride. Why spend more
Good looking and surprisingly low weight with alu rims😊

Not watched but hoping the answer is yes as I just bought one!
Better value than the carbon gt grade?
I like the Flat bar TRVL version......and decent value for money.
Cube Nuroad C62 pro on paper looks like better value for the money. ? Review
We all don’t ride on gravel here in the US. We ride on dirt, mud, rocks, single track and dirt roads.
Definitely drop the Gravel name,Road/Allroad/Adventure/Hart tail MTB, simple 👍

And shipping it back and a long wait when the inevitable Canyon QC fail means a warranty repair 😅
Just buy a modern XC bike, don’t really see the point in a 90s MTB with drop handlebars. But whatever you’re in to.
Lost me at 42 tires. No way I’m buying that.
😂 strong feelings, mate? You should get that looked at.
@@peteo3436 Why
Yeah, same. I was intrigued until the tyre clearance was confirmed. Shame.
Still think £2000 is a lot for a Halfords bike. I’m shaw you could get a direct sale bike better equipped for less

Seems like innovation is simply reinventing the mountain bike. Before we know it gravel bikes will have full suspension and 60mm tyre clearance

Started at 850£?
Granted. Just shocked that £2k is considered as not much nowadays.
Maybe consider the 8.9 ADV Black, as that is a well specced bike for £1200.
The drive train is about as gravel as my fill squish is road bike. I see no value, I see compromise and a boat load of bits that need swapping out adding to the build cost and creating waste.
Title of best value gravel bike still goes to the poseidon x
Still waiting for Propain Terrel review 🙄
Nice bike and good value for sure! Not best value though (Cube nuroad c62 2025 has best value.
2x now we’re talking screw that 1x nonsense
mmm... looks like Cervelo Aspero GRX 810 2022/2023
All good till tyre clearance
I don't like carbon as a material for bikes. I prefer aluminum and titanium. Carbon fiber makes me nervous.
I don’t see why, it is strong as hell.
Don't be nervous I'm a big guy gym rat 90kg and my carbon Boardman bike has been fine for years now and I'm not gentle with it.
@ same. 100kg and 14 years on one carbon frame.
My local Halfords is awful
Wait until the fatbike fraternity start crying about 50mm tyres 😂
