    Clear as MUD. Yukon notes: Use GL5 mineral oil. Detriot Trutrac: Use mineral GL5 with no LSD FM. Video= "Synthethics work great". Im just going to use Supertech Dino for the first 500 mile break-in and then Mobil Delvac afterwards...

    Some of the details shared in this video are really helpful even beyond talking about lsd's and lockers... I was having the hardest time finding information on the differences between GL-1, GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5. My 1950 Ford tractor requires GL-1, but I wanted to understand if there are advantages to the other types of gear oil and anything to watch out for.. An additional layer of complexity is the gear oil is shared between the transmission, rear end, and hydraulic pump.

      the early gl1 and gl3 specs were for old mineral based fluids and have largely been superseded by modern oil specifications. on modern fluids, GL5 is a hypoid oil designed for ring and pinions, GL4 is used more commonly in manual trans and is engineered not only for spur gears, but also has additive packages that are more friendly with " yellow metals " found in synchronizers . Most modern GL5 gear oils also pass a MT1 standard indicating they are low Sulphur, and should not corrode the synchronizers.

      Almost every GL5 bottle of oil says on the back "Not for synchronized transmissions".

    I just had 383 Yukon gears put in my 1986 Corvette Dana 44 ? What gear oil is best for the brand new Yukon gears?

    I usually use full synthetic gear oil with a bottle of friction modifier in just about every axle. I figure not to many people change their trucks gear oil to often. So the good stuff should last longer with better protection. Most trucks I work on are stock Fords chevy toyota and jeeps.

    At 3:50 he says synthetic gear oil is ok for helical limited slips but USA Standard Gear recommends petroleum base oils for their Spartan Helical limited slips ("Recommended gear oil: Non-synthetic 80W-90 GL-5")

    What do you use if you have a transaxle with a clutch type limited slip? With the same oil being shared between the synchronized transmission and the diff?

    I changed gear oil in Manual Santro 6 months ago it was yellowish brown and i changed it again yesterday it came out same yellowish brown.. Used GL4 both times. I think someone 5 years ago put differential fluid in the gear box which has erroded the metal badly.. i couldn't find metal type and gear type specifications on internet. Its Santro 2007 model...

      @yukongearandaxle  3 роки тому

      gl4 and its derivatives are typically a trans oil that are designed with different EP additives to prevent corrosion to " yellow " metal parts such as syncros. gl4+ is not an API approved designation, and is likely a marketing hype.

      most manufacturers of torsen style differentials recommend a conventional GL5 with out friction modifiers. to " slick " of a fluid will prevent the worm gears from functioning properly, and result in a low torque bias.

      motorcycles often have shared crankcases, and will have very specific oil requirements, it is best to follow the OEM fluid recommendations.

    Why is it a company secret on how much friction additive to add. It doesn't say on Yukon's LSD product specific web pages, it's not on the additive page, it's not friction additive label. NADA! What a clown show - Yukon recommends their product but can't tell you how much to add. Oh, you can ask their customer service if you're lucky enough to get through during their banker's hours. Clown Show!

      its no secret, we recommend an entire 4 oz bottle of our additive be used for up to 3qts. above 3qt capacity , add a second bottle. use of other manufacturers additives not specifically formulated for the composite clutches may result in much higher qtys being required , resulting in the dilution of the gear oil to provide the needed level of additives to keep the clutch pack working smoothly.
      we have found that many of the common commercial alternatives require as much as 24 oz of additive to equal the concentration and ppm levels of a single 4oz bottle of ours.
