Here in zone 9b ca i planted a row of these @ 12" tall. They are now 3-5' tall and looking great! They are on a drip system and love the watering schedule of 3x a week @ 1.5 gph.
I’m in the same area! And recently planted two about the same height! I’ve been watering three times a week with the hose until there is a little standing water around them in the morning! Just trying to figure out a good schedule, one of them looks like it’s maybe turning a little yellow brown at the top!!
Great information yet again Jim! I absolutely love Italian Cypress, and I have a total of 6 in my yard here in Salt Lake City, Utah (7b) and they do absolutely amazing here in the dry desert. They have taken down to 5 F with out even skipping a beat. And they actually do really good in ultra alkaline soils (8 -8.5 PH). They’re literally planted every 1000 feet in southern Utah lol, very very common.
HortTube with Jim Putnam Wouldn't you think it's odd though? The soil here tends to not drain very well, anytime there's rain, there's floods and flash floods because the water doesn't soak into the ground.
@HortTube with Jim Putnam Hi, thanks for sharing your expertise. I live in California, and I have 4 Italian Cypress trees all about 5 years old. One of my trees is turning brown on the top of the tree and the brown/dryness is working itself downward. How can I help save the Italian Cypress tree? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you very much.
Just came across your video, I recently planted some Italian blue cypress trees in the backyard and I’m out in Southern California! About two weeks ago I’m trying to figure out the watering schedule on these guys! I’ve been doing it about 2 to 3 times a week and giving them a deep watering One of them, it’s starting to turn a little yellow brown at the top and the second one is kind of doing the same. I’m wondering if I’m over watering or under watering?!
Thank you for sharing this information. What about the wind... I think they are not wind lovers, correct? I was living in Germany and I spent time getting to know them. I notice the soil is red sand and drainage, as you said. Also, they like to be with other Italian Cypress in a row. I am now in zone 8b Mount Vernon VA. My plan is to replace clay for sand, but I don't know how deep to go😬 Also, I will make sure to include drain holes. To be honest, I don't know if it will work....I am planning to do the same for Lavender. I wanted to plant them in the walkway in front of the house. What do you recommend?
We are in SE VA and planted nine Italian Cypresses last April (seven in the ground and two in large pots). They did great through the spring, summer and fall but the deep freeze of January was too much and they all received varying degrees of winter damage. The trees are still alive and have significant top growth so we are confidant they were not diseased and had good conditions otherwise. We would like to try again but are wondering if we should plant now or wait until the fall.
I have a cypress number 14 trees purchased from a nursery a year and a half ago and lengths ranging from one to one and a half meters and planted in the ground At that time the growth was fast upward while the trunks on the stem were slow Its height is now about 4. Meters to 3 meters But the problem we are facing now is the appearance of yellowing in the trunks on the leg with the appearance of spray on it from the bottom of the tree to the middle of the leg, while from the middle of the leg to the top is still green. The tree also began to bend towards the ground Knowing that I have used insecticides and fungi to combat this disease, but it is useless I hope you answer before yellowing reaches the top of the tree and die ⚘⚘
Hi. I live in Austin, TX, zone 8b. How close can the Italian Cypress trees be planted next to each other? I need enough to cover a single row along my property line, which is 98 feet. I’d like to plant them in a straight line as close to each other as possible. Thanks!
Very informarive video I thank you, I have a question if you had a moment to answer it would be very helpful. I have 15 of these trees and they are about 2.5 meters in height, 5 of them have alot of green fruit like things on them and down there near the bottom od these tress some of the branches are drying and become dead branches is it normal or should I worry? One more thing , one of the trees have yellow parts in the middle of its leaves it is some kind of disease? Thank you in advance.
I bought Italian cypress to add to my Italian cypress collection in the backyard. I live in desert southwest (100+ weather). They're 5 gallon babies (planted) and they are starting to turn gray. Their big brothers are doing well but the new ones don't look happy. I'm watering them once a week. Is that too little watering? Please help.
Hi! My Italian cypress star to look brown. But I don't no it's because need water 💦 or cause it's raining a lot ? Please. Respond. And live in Asheville NC.
I live in Southeastern Arizona. We get freezing temperatures here a lot during the winter. I haven't covered my Italian Cypress trees all winter. They aren't looking too well, and it looks like animals have been chewing on the lower branches (maybe rabbits). I fertilized them this morning. They are near some mesquite trees. Do you think the mesquites are stealing water from them underground?
My first one flat out died. When I got a replacement, I read about some kind of fungus or other disease that described it as looking like "rusty-colored" leaves. It said to remove them. My replacement one had those "rusty-colored" leaves on the very top. I cut it off. You said to NOT cut off the top. So, my tree is going to make more huge limbs coming out of the side? If it was diseased when I purchased it, will this one get the same disease that killed my last one? Thank you for your help. How do I find your response?
He said it could cause that issue, not that it will, just make sure you pay attention and cut off any trunk that is forming and make sure you leave one trunk growing
My Italian Cypress was doing well until I took out a lawn near it. I believe much of its roots had spread under the lawn and gotten water from the water for the lawn. For 6 or 7 years, that's almost all the water it got. I never watered it directly. I have watered it a lot since, but it has done poorly. I have read that Italian Cypress can easily be watered too much and get root rot. If the symptoms of being watered too little and too much are the same, how do I tell? I live in Las Vegas. I haven't given them any water in several weeks. Can I assume that if they had root rot, it's gone? If I water them once per week, will root rot go away?
My IC's are mutants I think. I planted them in a bed that not only has terrible anaerobic soil(stinky, non-draining, constantly wet) and only a few hours of noontime sun. They have grown 3 feet this year and don't seem inclined to stop.
Hi I live in Las Vegas NV I have 10 of them for 3 years now do you think they are established now? It’s summer now we got dry heat that’s why I put mulch around them,I water them 3 times a week
Can I grow these in the dessert of Phoenix? :) I want these in my home, But not sure if it will survive? Is there a type of cypress that does better in extreme heat?
Hi! I live in ohio, Can I plant these here? I have a VERY nosy neighbor stalking me thru her windows. I'd like to plant these along my privacy fence. Will they die or survive here if I baby them?
I have 2 Italian Cypress by my entry to front door. One each side, they are about 13feet tall. They were doing beautifully. Then last week the neighbors 60foot tree fell on my house and part of it was resting on them. They are bent now, the tops look great but the trees are bent and some of the leaves or arms were sheared off. The trunks were not damaged at all. Still very solid. Does anyone think they can be straightened and fixed? I am in Central Florida. The tree guys that took the fallen one away said it would be no problem. Just wondering what you all think...I should do...
We had snow bend 5 of ours over and they straightened up ok in about 2 or 3 months, I helped them by supporting them by a post to help straighten them just incase the bend started to become permanent
Hi, i got cuttings and I used rooting powder on them. Its been about 2 weeks, maybe 2.5 and some of the branches are getting brown. Yesterday I pulled one up to see if it sent down any roots and nothing. When using cuttings, how long would it take to show that its still alive and growing?
i'm looking at these and seem to be sold by hight. I'm interested in about 12' max Will they all grow huge to 40'? at my 12' desired hight, how far apart should I plant them?
I’ve killed around 6 of these in the past three years. I had one hang on from early January until last week I came home and it’s turning brown real bad so it won’t be long. I love these and trying to get them to grow around north central North Carolina. I told a neighbor a month ago that maybe I should dig a big area and mix sand with the soil. Do you think that might work? Didn’t help that we’ve had 20 feet of rain this year since I planted them. I’m guessing I’ll never get one to grow in the ground since you don’t see them in my region. I love how they don’t take up so much room in the yard. Thinking of giving up and try emerald green arbitovae but they aren’t unique. There’re quite a few around my area.
Great information, I planted 4 last year. I have one question though , two of them the top branches are dropping like if they are bending to the sides, is it normal? Or maybe I'm watering too much😟
Hey Jim love your content. I had a question about Leyland Cypress trees, how do you know if they’re dead and beyond saving? I planted some cypress trees that were about 6 feet tall and how look to have dried up. If I scratch the main trunk it is still a nice green color. But all the leaves/needles are drying and falling. No insects and no weird fungal appearance either. Im in north Florida st Augustine
@ Ahmed ..my Italian cypress was thriving for 13 years .. something’s wrong in north east florida .. heavy intense chemtrailed skies .. must be chemical poisoning .. barium strontium aluminum.. government now admits to geoengineering & the metal nano particles amplify radio frequencies .. cypress seem most effected???😿💔
I live in tropical country where it is mostly hot all day long. I ordered many types of cypress seeds and have tried to grow them in different types of soil in outdoor pots but not one germinated. I have seen videos soaking seeds in warm water, or wrap the seeds in wet cloth but I don't know what I do wrong I just can't see any seedlings. Any advise?
Great video - thank you. Question: I planted my Italian Cypress from a pot into ground about 1 yr ago. They were 4ft or so. They've done well, grown about a foot and nice and green. A few weeks ago, I cut off the bamboo stake that was tied to the trunk/stem when I got them. Several are now leaning. Will they self straighten or should I now figure a way to restake them straight?
+Robert DeSantis I would probably restake them. You were right to take those stakes off to prevent them from damaging the trees, but they obviously need new ones for a while longer.
Thanks for this info. I am planting in soil that has some clay in it but otherwise is quite rich. Would have liked to know how to prepare the soil for planting, like do I use some sand or mulch. I have also heard that pines like acidic soil is this true?
How lonmg do I need to stake my italian cypress. I have 3 of them that were planted 9 months ago. They are about 9 feet tall and are currently staked. When I remove the stakes the tops bend over a lot. How long should they remain staked?
Hi I live in York County SC. I want to try these. Soil is clay. Should I amend with mushroom compost or soil conditioner or both? If both what ratio? No peat is in the mix. I often use pea gravel in heavy soil however this area is not too bad. They will be planted NE exposure sorry thats where she wants them, as a backdrop near the tall bare side of the house, . Good light, no shade just not much direct sunlight. Suggestions for a success.
You will notice that they are grown in pine bark soil conditioner when you get them. That is all I would mix in and leave them elevated some. Should be fine.
Hey Jim, thank you for the great information about this plant - I like to have some in the Philippines but with our wet and dry season... would you think these conifers can survive the tropical Philippines climate? Thanks.
As Jim said, these Italian Cypress grows to Plant Hardiness Zones 7-10. The Philippines has hardiness zone of 12-13. Also, Italian Cypress doesn't want too much humidity in which most of the Philippine Islands have.
Jim, I have some Italian Cypress that I started in large pots a few years before putting them in the ground last year. The years they were in pots they didn't get as much sun as they should have so the bottom (first 3 feet or so) are very bare.Is there any way to force growth from the bare spots (by scoring the trunk etc) or will they eventually grow out at the bottom because they look less than appealing considering they are statement pieces in my front yard?Or am I going to have to teansplant them with some new ones? Love tge videos.Best of luck!
They come from the dry Mediterranean climate, so really don't need much water at all. Florida already is very humid and has more rain than the Mediterranean. I would suggest not watering them unless there is a severe drought and see if that improves things.
Hi Jim! Enjoy your vids! I just bought my house and it came w 4 Italian cypress trees. I live in Houston, TX and weather down here has been schizophrenic. Harvey hit, then the freeze now the ICs look think, and some oozing sap. What does this mean?
Informative video, thanks for your knowledge! Any idea on its performance in the midwest? I'm in zone 5b and looking for a great screening plant with good height. We've got good draining soil, plenty of sun, but winters can get extreme as they did this previous one (-20 F). Thanks again!
@@Eastbaypisces hello sir I'm in northern California in Sacramento.. I planted these tree in my backyard its been about about 14 months they all look healthy green but not growing at all still the same size height as I planted them .. thanks
+miteymitecoach It is colder there than my area. I would try one for a season and then go from there. You would be better off with something like a blue point Juniper
Massaging the tip for around 5 minutes each day will bring it back to life. After 5 minutes a whitish wax will shoot from the top and you know you’re finished.
our two trees have been producing a lot of seeds and whilst we have been growing them in the past year, the side branches keeping sagging to the sides, so we have to tie it fully with garden twine. How do we get them to grow straight up and what do we do about the seeds? They are starting to look untidy, unless we continuously have them tied up. Our neighbour ha one and it is growing beautifully. I hope you can help.
Jim, can you make a video planting Italian cypress seeds. What are the best technique and what is the best soil to start them. Any best additives liquid brand when watering them for fast growth?
I have a couple of seeds. What are the proper instructions for planting them and how many times a day do you give it water and in what temperature do you keep the planted seeds in?
How about sound barrier. I would like to block a car wash that was recently build behind my home. I have 70 x 6 feet of tree line space to plant. How close can I plant for a real tight privacy barrier.
What is the difference between Italian cypress and Mediterranean cypress- I hear The Mediterranean are almost fireproof vs Italian which are very fire vulnerable .
I just planted one of these yesterday for one of my customers. I am in the Northeast in Connecticut. I planted it where there was a Hinoiki Cypress that I had cut down at His request that had been there for many years that had died. My customer who is a tree lover decided to replace it with an Italian Cypress. What do you think it's chances are Jim ? I ask this because you said these mainly thrive in warm climates like the Southeast, Pacific West and the Mediterranean
That's a good question. You may have cold, humidity, and wet working against you. Hopefully it will be well established for next winter. Good luck with it.
Is this a good plant to try and propagate? I just clipped some off of a heavy branch a few weeks ago and placed it in some hormone and soil and it's been a few weeks. They still seem alive, but how can I know without disrupting the potential roots? How long do you think until I know that it took root or not?
I'm in zone 9. They're definitely growing right now. I just fertilized the three 25' trees I have and they're putting off a nice new green growth. Thanks for the heads up.
Hello thanks for the video i need your help, i buy a baby one about 0.25 m tall and i was wondering how long is the root of this tree by 3 m tall? this in order to know how deep and wide should the hole where i will plant the tree should be? I will plant it on my backyard do you think it is ok 40 cm deep and 15 cm diameter of the hole? By the way this specie is the "Cupressus Sempervirens" right?
I have never pulled a large one out, so I don't have direct experience with them. They are planted against buildings all the time so I'm guessing it isn't a problem.
Kwameika Postell Conifers can stay unrooted and look alive for a long time. I think they are easy to root off of young vigorous plants. Probably not off old wood.
Here in zone 9b ca i planted a row of these @ 12" tall. They are now 3-5' tall and looking great! They are on a drip system and love the watering schedule of 3x a week @ 1.5 gph.
Nice. Do you think I can top these every year? To keep em 25ft..ish?
I’m in the same area! And recently planted two about the same height! I’ve been watering three times a week with the hose until there is a little standing water around them in the morning! Just trying to figure out a good schedule, one of them looks like it’s maybe turning a little yellow brown at the top!!
This was most useful information regarding the Italian Cypress Jim, thankyou and keep up the great work :)

11 months later but that's a cool reference, that movie is A1. That's last scene is gut wrenching .
I am growing 20 italian cypress in California and plants seem to be doing excellent
Sounds beautiful
Yes these are so easy to shear! I just did two of nine in the front of the house while it was dark out. They are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jim, really enjoy your channel. Great advice without too much fluff. Think it's a little colder where you are than here in Britain. Thanks.
Loving my Italian Cypress all the way from Tucson, Arizona!
+Much Unique Jim You are certainly in a better area to grow them than I am.

The soil here tends to not drain very well, anytime there's rain, there's floods and flash floods because the water doesn't soak into the ground.

Can I grow them by airlayering?
I have clay soil. What would you recommend that is tall, slender, full sun in Greensboro, NC?

Also do you have any tips for trimming italian cypress trees ?

How lonmg do I need to stake my italian cypress. I have 3 of them that were planted 9 months ago. They are about 9 feet tall and are currently staked. When I remove the stakes the tops bend over a lot. How long should they remain staked?
Your video was really helpful, thank you.

@@JimPutnam thank you very much
Hey Jim, thank you for the great information about this plant - I like to have some in the Philippines but with our wet and dry season... would you think these conifers can survive the tropical Philippines climate?
Are you able to take cuttings from an Italian cypress and root them? Thanks
What are white spots on my italian cypress foliage?
I am in central FL Orlando .. love the italian Cypress..but I having some problems with them...it is posible some kind of bugs? ..or too much water?
They come from the dry Mediterranean climate, so really don't need much water at all. Florida already is very humid and has more rain than the Mediterranean. I would suggest not watering them unless there is a severe drought and see if that improves things.
My 2 feet tall is turning brown. Both of them. I have check for pest and funguns and just seem brown. Anyone???
Italian Cypress is probably not going to work for you. I would look at Degroots arborvitae
@@JimPutnam Roger that! Thanks for the quick reply! I'll look into that... Thanks for all the great, informative vids! We appreciate it.
Planted seedlings since the month of December but its leaves started dead I do not know why please reply
I'm in Northern California, I planted in clay soil, mixed with potting mix soil, will that be okay?
+Brad S I don't know how much peat that mix you used has. It can hold to much water. Are you in a dry area of the state.
yea its pretty dry, not very much rain
@@Eastbaypisces hello sir I'm in northern California in Sacramento.. I planted these tree in my backyard its been about about 14 months they all look healthy green but not growing at all still the same size height as I planted them .. thanks
You say that you shouldn’t cut the tops, because it will grow several trunks but what is you don’t want the tree to get any taller?
I live in Winston-Salem, is this a good area to grow these trees? When should I start?
+miteymitecoach It is colder there than my area. I would try one for a season and then go from there. You would be better off with something like a blue point Juniper
What do i have to do when my young cypress starts drying up from near the root?
Massaging the tip for around 5 minutes each day will bring it back to life. After 5 minutes a whitish wax will shoot from the top and you know you’re finished.
our two trees have been producing a lot of seeds and whilst we have been growing them in the past year, the side branches keeping sagging to the sides, so we have to tie it fully with garden twine. How do we get them to grow straight up and what do we do about the seeds? They are starting to look untidy, unless we continuously have them tied up. Our neighbour ha one and it is growing beautifully. I hope you can help.
+Susan Crusade it is in enough sun. They will grow thin and spindly in the shade
Jim, can you make a video planting Italian cypress seeds. What are the best technique and what is the best soil to start them. Any best additives liquid brand when watering them for fast growth?
Thanks! Please suggest evergreens like this Italian cypress for Zone 5, that are under 30 feet tall, 12 feet wide and have an upright growth. Thanks!
Taylor juniper.
My italian cypress are currently around 4 and a half feet how long do they take to reach a height of 10 feet??
They grow 1-2' per year if in full sun
I have a couple of seeds. What are the proper instructions for planting them and how many times a day do you give it water and in what temperature do you keep the planted seeds in?
+Leesandro Carrera I have only done cuttings on these. I'm not an expert on using seed. Sorry
thank you for the quick reply and honesty.
How about sound barrier. I would like to block a car wash that was recently build behind my home. I have 70 x 6 feet of tree line space to plant. How close can I plant for a real tight privacy barrier.
Plant four feet apart, they grow up to four feet wide.
What is the difference between Italian cypress and Mediterranean cypress-
I hear The Mediterranean are almost fireproof vs Italian which are very fire vulnerable .
As far as I know it is different names for the same plant.

Thanks Jim
Hi can this tree survive in 100+ greed ?
Is this a good plant to try and propagate? I just clipped some off of a heavy branch a few weeks ago and placed it in some hormone and soil and it's been a few weeks. They still seem alive, but how can I know without disrupting the potential roots? How long do you think until I know that it took root or not?
+Andrew P. They should callus on the bottom after a couple of weeks. May take a long time to root. Better done when they are growing.
I'm in zone 9. They're definitely growing right now. I just fertilized the three 25' trees I have and they're putting off a nice new green growth. Thanks for the heads up.
Rabits can damage them so fence off when small or get rid of the rabits.
+Fredy Castillo Probably don't need to worry to much about the depth. Just dig it double the width.
How do the roots grow....will it crack concrete if planted close.?
I have never pulled a large one out, so I don't have direct experience with them. They are planted against buildings all the time so I'm guessing it isn't a problem.
Thank you!:)
How far apart would you recommend planting several of these to create a privacy wall? Thanks
Kwameika Postell Conifers can stay unrooted and look alive for a long time. I think they are easy to root off of young vigorous plants. Probably not off old wood.
+Kwameika Postell 3 to 4 feet
