      they can't go thru earth and rock so the blob would be stuck there. as to oxygen, not sure they require oxygen, but on the other hand it is a gelatinous blob which would signify it requiring to absorb oxygen into it's membrane, but very little would be required to the point that the amount filtered thru the earth and rock should suffice it to survive.

    When Scanners met Village of the Damned meets Stranger Things at WizardCon while watching Firestarter and playing Psychonaughts. As for the gelatinous cube question, fire and slicing weapons seem to be the best ways to kill it but short of that there's a theory that they are basically immortal, so I don't think depriving it of oxygen would kill it.

      Better would have been him smashing it under a block of earth/stone. I think even a Gelatinous Cube can't really survive large scale bludgeoning damage, say from a landslide. It might still be trapped forever, if it can't climb up the pit, or dissolve the earth to create a new tunnel

    @ Lance: Sealing the cube in the ground would probably not kill it as it can squeeze between cracks to escape long before it would suffocate, however, that much weigh dropping on it would do some serious bludgeoning damage, especially if it was dropped from enough height, which might kill it outright.

    • @Solidpat
      @Solidpat 2 роки тому +1

      Right

    • @jackielinde7568
      @jackielinde7568 2 роки тому +1

      But the source material doesn't state the cube can climb, so the cracks are useless. HOWEVER, I don't think Lance dropped the plug from high enough to outright kill the cube using falling damage formula to determine how much damage would the cube suffer from the 15 foot plug. If the cube survived the initial blow, and the material was dirt/soil, it's entirely possible that the soil gets ingested by the cube and SLOWLY precipitates out the bottom. This would raise the floor and allow the cube to eventually escape it's prison. The questions are, how long would this take and would the cube starve to death beforehand?
      Now, if we're talking other slimes, then, yes they would be able to squeeze through the cracks and climb up and out of the pit.

    • @johnhenkel1828
      @johnhenkel1828 2 роки тому +1

      @@jackielinde7568 the gelatinous cube can only digest organic material, but that doesn't mean that other materials cannot pass through it eventually. It stands to reason that it could climb in the same manor that it travels on horizontal surfaces, though it would obviously be slower.

    • @jackielinde7568
      @jackielinde7568 2 роки тому +1

    A gelatinous cube under that much earth in my games would still be ok, but out for that fight.

  • @jackielinde7568
    @jackielinde7568 2 роки тому +1

    To answer the question about the Gelatinous Cube... maybe??? First thing, while the cube does have status immunities, they're against things that attack the mind. It is not resistant or immune to physical attacks. That means, a fifteen foot cube of either dirt or solid stone would do crushing/bludgeoning damage to the creature. I'd rule that would fit under the normal falling damage rules, but your DM might have a differing opinion.
    Now, depending on the material, it might eventually resurface. First of all, if the fifteen foot cube were made of stone, then we're just talking about the creature being entombed. It's possible it might try to squeeze out of the cracks, there is nothing to suggest it can climb. So it stays until it starves to death. If we're talking dirt, then I think we need to talk to the DM. While it cannot digest dirt, just the biological materials in dirt, it can ingest dirt... and then the dirt precipitates out of the cube some time later. This creates the "donkey in a pit" scenario, where the dirt falls through the cube and pushes it upwards as it settles out. So a cube could escape the trap eventually... but it would take a long time.
    I don't know if the cube would suffocate in the trap, but as long as there isn't enough organic matter for it to dine on, a cube could starve. Again, this would be up to the DM. Also, if we're talking other slimes, they would be able to escape the trap if there were cracks sufficient enough for it to slip through.

    Ok so the soil crushing the cube thing made me get my math head on.
    15ft cubed works out at 3375 cubic ft. 1 cubic ft is around 80lb of weight would make the weight of the item 270,000lb which is 135 US Ton.
    Im assuming you are using Telekenis as a spell for lifting it, and at level 5 you could lift 1000lb or half a Ton. So you wouldn't actually get the 135 US Ton only half a ton, thus not even giving you the 15ft cubed hole you wanted for it to fall in to drop the cube on it.
    So for argument sake im assuming higher lvl casting results in higher weight value that you can lift, and at 9th its pretty significant.
    So a 15ft cube of soil can be raised up 60ft, to fall in the the hole giving you 1d6 per 10ft so 6d6. Which seems awfully low for 135 tons of soil.
    Then there's falling damage first for the cube falling in the hole. Which would be 2d6.
    So far that's 2d6 from the fall, and 6d6 from the soil. Not looking good! but we have suffocation.
    Which as per 3.5 ( as its not mentioned in 5E ) Cubes infact, do not breath. Bummer.
    So more than likely it took a average of 28hp of bludeoning damage, and then just kinda oozes out of the ground after a while like someone sticking a their hand into a tube of ooze.

    Gelatinous cubes don’t need to breath, but they can’t dissolve rock and aren’t immune to bludgeoning damage. So, if all that earth didn’t smoosh it to death, it might be trapped under all the dirt and rock. It could conceivably ‘eat’ some of the soil and eventually get out, but If there is too much rock, it might just be stuck and eventually starve and die.

    While the books have never outright stated if gelatinous cubes need air, Dragon Magazine #124 stated that they could sometimes be found in water. Furthermore, Burying it would prove to be only a temporary solution, as it would absorb the soil into itself, dissolving the organic material, and slowly discarding the inorganic matter beneath it. I figure in about 2 weeks or so, that cube would be free.

    The Canon of oozes most generally falls under a form of immortality. Other than an adventurer or starvation, they will continue to exist. So, essentially, if you were to befriend a gelatinous cube, preferably one of berlews sentry cubes because they have a natural intelligence, you can actually place them in a bag of holding for a limited time. (Dms choice that is)One campaign I played, the bbeg was a sorc/bard who lured us in with her songs. She proceeded to bombard us with oozes via catapult that she had trapped inside of glass jars. We all died in the end. We were a party of barbs lol, but it was really fun none the less and a very interesting take. In short, trapping the cube wouldn't kill it. In fact, if there were any sort of cracks or crevices it could seep out and continue its assault. Just my experience anyways!!! Gg on the video! This was amazing as always! Ah,..but will our players be crew of the Galactica, Cylons, civilian members of the fleet, members of the fleet who may secretly be Cylons?
    The possibilities!

    Whether or not the Gelatinous Cube SHOULD be able to (or even need to) breathe isn’t important- what IS important is that you stick with whichever answer you end up going with…. and run the gag into the ground, just like the cube. ^__^

  • @justmutantjed
    @justmutantjed 2 роки тому

    I reckoned that a Gelatinous Cube wouldn't need to breathe; further, given its caustic nature, I would personally rule that it'd eventually dissolve the material directly in contact with it until it's free again... or at least it ends up as the hazard at the bottom of a pit trap from the plug of earth that's slowly been sinking down onto/into it over X amount of time.

    In an old-old Dragon Magazine article, there was an adventure or something that was run similar to this I think. The 'npc' job was either writer or drawer or something. I can't remember. Stats were pretty much anything Infinite and can auto-(no resist in any manner) force out of his office.

    Smothering would not work. According to Sage Advice, from Mike Mearls, "I don't really have a canonical answer, but it's more fun to say they don't breath, so that's the answer."

    The gelatinous cube would need to split apart and surface to get back to the 10 x 10 would maybe take 45 min.

    as to oxygen, not sure they require oxygen, but on the other hand it is a gelatinous blob which would signify it requiring to absorb oxygen into it's membrane, but very little would be required to the point that the amount filtered thru the earth and rock should suffice it to survive. basically any oxygen intake would be acquired thru absorption and earth and rock not being a very solid barrier would allow it to still breath unlike if it was caught in any other type of medium which is too dense for air to filter thru.

    I looked at my various editions of D&D Monster Manuals and only 3rd Ed specifies that as gelatinous cubes are oozes and oozes, as a type, need to breathe, if not specified otherwise, gelatinous cubes need to breathe.
    Besides the breathing issues, I looked up what a cubic foot of dirt weighs, which is between 74 and 110 lbs. If I'm being conservative and say the average weight is 80 lbs, that's 270,000 lbs, or 135 tons, of dirt. Gelatinous Cubes aren't any more resistant to an avalanche than people are, so I'm pretty sure it got crushed to death. Even if I reduced it to just dirt that fell on it, as it's not filling the entire hole, that's still 120,000 lbs or 60 tons of dirt. It's dead, Jim.
