Commercial A&P here, this is definitely my new favorite channel. That 310 looks like an absolute basket case, terrible idea for sure... which is exactly why you should do it. That is the kind of wild ride you can sell tickets too! I'll be waiting for the "Save the 310" t-shirts to hit the market so we can all help fund this bankruptcy in progress.

310s have become the disposable twins of the market place. It is cheaper to buy one with some life left in it, than fix them up. As Jimmy said $60 g's can buy something already in the air. There is some decent parts to sell here. I love the old 310s but you got to start with something working first. The engines looked like they were nicely pickled before it was parked, so there is likely some resale in engine parts there. Too bad about the props.

Great story. Save the 310. My father rebuilt a 1948 Stinson 108-3 many years ago. Was a disassembled wreak , turned out to be a fabulous airplane. Once you are done with the 310 it will be worth well north of 50k with everything checked out and documented. I chartered a 310 over Lake Michigan many times. Really nice and useful airplane.

Craig the costs in Aviation are absurd!! I'm in the midst of an engine overhaul and firewall forward upgrade. The plane is a Single Engine Cessna Cardinal. The IO390 Factory Overhaul cost me a little over $50,000. A new propeller was $15,000. All the other miscellaneous parts was $15,000. I haven't gotten the bill from the A&P yet so I don't have the labor costs.

Just about fell out of my chair when I saw "Priebe Prop Shop, Findlay OH". That's where I did almost all of my fixed wing training (private & commercial licenses, rotary & fixed wing). The prop work may have been done by Larry Priebe and/or his son Jim. Sadly the airfield they owned is gone, as is their business. Well like a thousand other people would like to see the 310 rebuilt..but have to agree its a lot of money...so my thought is if you have to do six months of paperwork and deal with the FAA why not make it experimental and do some thinking out of the box, like with the props etc. seems like there is a lot you could do like three-blade composite props, etc.

I was a USAF Security Police Security Specialist stationed at RAF Upper Heyford UK during the shut down, and went to work in Law Enforcement after our mission went away. While working LE, I had the opportunity to work over at RAF Bicester, and watched the RAF glider club take off & land there. They launched via winch attached to the bed of a Bedford truck, that pulled them aloft, then they'd drop the cable nearly over the truck.

As an owner of a 310C, I am far too familiar with the prop AD in question. There are a few prop shops that can do the work, you just have to expand the geographic boundaries of your search. Although not cheap, it will be far less expensive than new props. BTW, that AD is pure BS, but there it is. There is a firm in FL that can rebuild the boost pump at a reasonable price, don't remember their name offhand. If not too corroded from mouse droppings, I know you would find the 310 to be much more fun to fly then the Azwreck, although more challenging to master. It will be faster and much more responsive, but can get away from an inexperienced, or briefly inattentive, pilot in about half a heartbeat. By comparison, the Aztec pretty much just plods along with mushy controls. Good luck with both.

Also, there is a long established prop shop in or near Minneapolis, MN that is well versed in older Hartzell props. I'm not sure of the name, but it may be Alexander. BTW, pull the aft scowling inspection plates and pull the exhaust augmented tubes to check the rear wing spars for corrosion on the 310 before you go too far with the plane.

Corrosion can be a real headache. Will continue to follow your thread with interest. It has been a long time (1970's) since I flew a 1956 Cessna 310. The prop issue is a tough one as is the damage done by the mouse factory. Wiring looks rough but anything that old needs new wiring anyway. Yes, airplanes convert money to noise. Twins do it twice as fast....Looks like the Aztec is better than expected. Since you have the "Six" you are familiar with the IO-540 Lycoming.

I've been looking at the Aztec market, and it's a pricey one, but a healthy market. The aircraft themselves are greatly loved by their owners for its comfort and space. Nice big windows for great views, and it's an excellent IFR platform. There really isn't a modern equivalent. Is it impossible to store the 310 until such time as the Piper is sold on? I wouldn't advise you to fly it yourself, as I'm afraid that once you have, you won't want to let go. One thought is that agencies, like the FAA, don't want the hassle of dealing with older aircraft. They're happy putting up all kinds of roadblocks to restoration. It's much easier for them dealing with new aircraft.

A little commentary based on experience: The non turbo aircraft exhaust systems are fixed on one end only - the end that bolts to the exhaust port on the engine; the rest of a non-turbo system is unsupported. That allows the entire exhaust to freely expand and contract as it goes from cold to hot - very hot.
Your turbo Aztec exhaust tubes are fixed on both ends - one at the engine, one at the turbo. This means they must have slip joints in them, otherwise when they get red hot and expand, they will tend to deform or crack. Most people never take these apart and lube them because it is a royal PITA but it is required every 200 hours, I believe, and IT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Folks bitch about turbos not being reliable or worth it, but they do not have good temp monitors nor are they doing the proper maintenance.
When I bought my Aztec, the joints were frozen solid, and sure enough there was about a 10" exhaust crack spewing hot exhaust all over the bottom of the engine and the throttle/governor cables. (This was missed, by the way, by a shop in NC, who dutifully drilled the pipe 2" away from the crack to install a TIT thermocouple. That was the least of their misses; another resulted in a top overhaul.)
To get those pipes apart I had to heat the outer pipe cherry red with an oxyacetylene torch (rosebud tip) and then dip the other part in liquid nitrogen before putting it in my vise and twisting hell out of it. Man were they stuck! Then clean up with emery cloth and lube with nickel-based exhaust lubricant. You can get that on Amazon, of all places.
    www.amazon.com/Permatex-77124-Nickel-Anti-Seize-Lubricant/dp/B0002UENJ2/
Enjoy. Believe me, I've made all the mistakes, so I'll look in from time to time on your Aztec project.

Took about a day and a half (OK, probably 20 minutes on a real clock) before ATC could get me lower. All-in-all a good airplane to get your ME and fly your family around in.

I don't believe that he was being a smart-ass or flaunting as well I believe he was teaching the guy a lesson about life..........
I believe what he meant by that was you've got to want something so bad the price doesn't matter you're going to get it..... And I've lived my life that way and it is made all the difference..... When people told me I couldn't buy homes I bought them just to prove to them that I could...... With no job or credit.......when people told me that yachts were too expensive I bought 13 of them.... Pretty girls had hundreds of them..
even went to work for Central intelligence and told them to go f*** themselves and walked..... So as far as your 310 goes.....if you want it bad enough you will find a way to do everything there is there $60,000 for props whatever screw the props change them put the wrong ones in there.....etc

Work on the Aztec and set up a fundraiser for the 310. There are enough nutty old plane fans out there to give you $5 to save it from the scrapyard 😊

Those magnetos only need a IRAN & AD check. Should only need minor parts if any & 1 hour labor each. Or send them to a mag shop for 500 hour inspection which cost $350 each. Call Tropic Air Power or Maxwell's magneto shop for the inspections.

Cut bait and weigh anchor on the Cessna 310. It is a cool aircraft but old and not feasible to service ($$$$). Friend of mine had and right engine fire while taxing in his 310 A model. You will need to loose (sell) many t-shirts to fund this project. And in the end you will still loose your shirt. Great energy in your channel, enjoy watching you become broke. :)

It's crazy that the 310 isn't worth more in flyable condition! It seems like a nice-looking plane, there seem to be lots of "Sky King" fans who have a soft spot for them, and as you said, there are only like 6 in flyable condition anymore... but it's still only worth $50K? Huh.

Well Jimmy, I agree the Aztec is worth it.
But the 310 is saveable too! I actually like it better than the Aztec. I would consider going ahead with it. Maybe restore it to a point where it can be sold.

my dad had an Arrow 200 the engine went out in mid flight. He set it down safely on an ag strip. Had it moved back close to home and I went to Texas and picked up another engine. Had the engine installed and got it running. I was flying the plane then one day my dad told me he sold it and had me deliver it. A friend of dad, who was also a pilot, told me he expected the plane to be sold. It was a matter of trust. He said dad didn't trust the plane anymore. He went and bought a Cherokee 180 and flew it for a few years then sold it and never flew again. That is probably what happened to the man with the twin. After it was wrecked he didn't trust it but he couldn't get rid of it either.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but restoring both will provide your channel with a lot of good content for months (even a year or so). What is that worth to you at your current and projected future subscriber count? Love your channel. I'm curious to see what you do.

That's a shame on the 310, I really thought that would be the better candidate. It would be a good project for somebody that really wants to fly it and own it, but it wouldn't be cost effective if somebody was planning on rebuilding it to sell. Would still love to see it in the air and not a scrap yard.

A full on resto on the 310 is going to be right at 150k.. and most of that is going to be avionics. Totally retarded for what aviation cost.

If an A&P had the money to buy the parts then he could do all the work himself and save a ton on labor. Many pilots of older twins actually to earn a degree as An A&P and save a ton on repairs and inspections. They also have the philosophy of most shops won't do as thorough job since its not their ass in the air while an owner/mechanic who flys his own aircraft will take extra time and a lot more TLC in maintaining it.

As a personal preference, fix the Aztec. I rode in one in 1976 and it felt safe, solid and just right. A few years later, a 310 ambushed its pilot with a roll after take-off in a warm climate and no one lived.
As a kid, I was smitten by the 310 for its style. The Aztec then and still does look downright ugly by comparison.

From a 310 guy and I hate to say it, but the move to make would be to sell/scrap as much as you can on the 310 and then put it towards the Aztruck. However if you do try to raise funds to save it then I'm in!

If the "Save the 310" t-shirts and Patreon don't work out, I'd try to sell the 310 to someone that would like to restore it, despite the costs. If no one wants it by the time the Aztek is in the sky again, you may have to part it out or scrap it. I'd love to see both airplanes fly again!
