I was a bar manager back in 1992, I booked Eric . He was nothing more than fabulous... Such a professional and all around wonderful person...I will say that all the acts that I booked he is probably one of my favorites............Love, Love Love him
Nobody can play music like him without a humble and good heart! I hope a day meet with him, and listen his sound live!
It's beautiful what tout are saying and he's such a great musician !
Saw him live in London around 1992 .
He's wonderful
Too bloody loud though 🤣
Eric,ta me,Is PurE HonestY,It just Shines through,just EffortLeSSly!AweSome 4 your Experiences with Him,Take care,nah!Jcsx
@@ericmcgrath9472 just guitar, not about quantum physics?
It is a wide world, not just a soul of this realm.
Well..........peace
Total dedication, no drugs, no alcohol, crazy living, just audio perfection!
definition of professional musician
He does do waterskiing.
and hiking
he's vegetarian and he meditates. Comedian Bill Hicks was sacked from opening for him for saying if Eric drank a beer and had burger he might write a hit - lol. EJ is an amazing artist no doubt.
@@raymondleemeadows4969 Yes i think that happened somewhere in the late '80s if I'm not wrong. Just a few years later Cliffs of Dover would turn out to be a Grammy winning hit.
We take guitar players pretty serious down in Texas. love you Eric!
And they ALL love him. Morse, Beck, Blackmore, Satch, Vai, George, Stern, May, Prince...how can-t you love what he does?? And such a nice, humble bloke
i heard andy timmons and paul reed smith freaked out when they saw him do the hendrix tribute concert.
Very humble and friendly
@@cosmic687 I thought Timmons sounded a lot like him.
@@Electrichead64 they were in the crowd with their jaws on the floor
@@cosmic687 I am impressed, too. When I saw him, I didn't know who he was. When I saw him, it must have been around 1989. Joe Satriani concert, Eric Johnson opened. Irvine Meadows. And dont as me how, but somehow I got front row seats, although well to the right. He looked younger than he was. I was amused that it seemed like everytime he bent the strings, he stood on his toes.
Genius , his chord voicing are heavenly , this guy is incredible, switching between rhythm and soloing effortlessly in a beautiful song !
EJ's guitar sound and music is sublime..like lying in green grass during the summer
Well said. And, i would agree.
Racquel Velasco it's very itchy to lie in green grass, but ok I got it.
Never thought of it that way. You have said it perfectly because i am lying here listening to it just like that!
Soothing...
Falling asleep peacefully with the sun beating on your body trying to recharge you... @)-;'-- make sure no thorns around first lol
His voice blends so well with his guitar playing.
When I shook his hand, all his masterful songs/chords/solos zipped through my body in a second. I felt a chill.
He's not underrated by those of us in Texas who have known him since the 1970's Electromagnet days. We knew he was a musical prodigy then as now.
what was he like in 1970s Electromagnet days?
The electromagnets were amazing and as good as any of the well know fusion bands of that era !
Amen. "Zap", and more.
Tom Cloke Like a young Mozart or Bach doing things on the guitar 🎸 no one could figure how he did it.
Fuck your texas
makes me mad that he is like the most underrated musician out there. that sound he makes with the guitar NO ONE can imitate
+kimo okamoto yeah, i didn't even find him on rolling stone's 100 greatest guitarists top list, rolling stone is a shit. Eric is very underrated, but respectable as well and his skills are on the very high level, nobody can bring more soul in that fast solos
+Један Човек you're right. exactly.
+Један Човек Tačno zemljače, ... super sounding fast solos - very rare
+kimo okamoto For me he's a mix of Neal Schon (polished tone), Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth... Possibly more polished than Schon and Satch even, who have excellent tone and phrasing already...
+kimo okamoto during the early 90s n shit he was getting rated top in the world every year.
Eric, Mark Knopfler, and David Gilmour are my Mount Rushmore of tone
Wish I would have said that!!!!! (Three of the best tone chasers ever!)
Completly agree, my three absolute favorite guitarists.
Me too, man. They are a sea of tone and emotion.
All in my top 5 favorite guitarists of all time.
Robben Ford as well
His playing is so melodic. Even when he is shreading his guitar each note is very distinctly clear and precise. What a real treasure he is. Great song and one of the best guitarist ever.
This is pretty much a religious experience. The tone, the technique, the soul... the holy trinity of guitar is all right here.
I wouldn't say he's underrated. He's just not mainstream enough for people to even know who he is. But then again his music isn't for the mainstream. It's for the few who can really appreciate fine music and musicianship...
Steve Vai’s speed, Joe Satriani’s technique, Eric Johnson’s emotion.
One of my favorites from Venus Isle. My wife and I had a great time at the show in Homer, NY the other night. Thanks to Eric and band for coming to play for us.
Eric is by far the finest guitarist who ever lived.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, masterfully performed by one of the greatest guitarists of all time. I echo right future's comment, too. This song makes me cry nearly every time I hear it and makes me fall in love with my wife more every day!
Here 2020. Love it. Sun shining on my face.
This song, ugh ...It's like laying on cool summer grass after a fresh rain .... the vibes are good for my soul. Love this guy !!
Everytime I here this number, I feel like I'm dreaming, and remember my young days I loved a woman, who is now my wife. I come to almost cry over the beautiful, profound, transparent sound...
+Seung-woo Nam Eric is one of my favorite musicians, no doubt. I have all
of his albums and his music honestly never gets old. It shines with brilliance
and sonic purity every time I listen to it
From Ireland.. was just watching Bill Hicks clips on youtube and saw his mam on Letterman saying her son told her to go see Eric.. Never heard of him before but my god! How is he not world famous! been listening to him for over an hour now.. Biblicle!. Need to go see him next year.. Sadly no International..
Thats a cool little piece of that interview even with dave & paul being oblivious to who he is
The best singing from him yet. This is a gorgeous song...
The sun bathed Eric Johnson´s songs. What an inspiration for life! Thank you so much for everything, Eric!
never get tired of Eric Johnson
Over the Music, it's a magician!
No doubt Eric Johnson is one of the greatest guitarist ever, but I think we have underestimated his songwriting. Thanks Eric for writing some great songs like this one. You da man!
very difficult to keep that cord structure, and sing that good. Amazing
I feel you. I've seen him live and bought nearly every album...not only is he an underrated guitarist, but his vocals are astounding. He is such a well-rounded musician.
I swear this guy can make up new ways to shape any chord as he goes along!! Damn amazing guitarist!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me. Eric Johnson chords are easy.
JUST STRETCH 7 OR 8 FRETS AND GRAB THE LOW E WITH YOUR NOSE. ..EASY PEASY.
Eric is a very musical player, I always liked his tone, phrasing, and note choice,
definitly one of my favorite players
Thank God for musicians like Eric who CREATE beautiful landscapes of sound....vocals, rythmn and lead guitar playing, bass guitar and drums. Love and Respect to you Eric!
This song is IMHO - my ultimate inspirational song. I always listen to this particular song whenever I need to uplift my mood = beautiful lyrics, angelic guitar chord progressions. Venus Isle album will always remain my ultimate EJ album. I thank him from the bottom of my heart for that masterpiece. Manhattan is my all time guitar instrumental. God Bless you EJ.
Lots of guitar aficionados tout Eric's lead playing and it is cool, but more than anything I love to hear him pound out all those gorgeous clean chords. That's why this song is one of my all time EJ favorites.
I literally think the same thing. Ive always been blown away by his lead playing and unique lead tone, but what really moves me is his clean tone and chord structures. Its a very beautiful thing.
@@danielhester3933 he's got incredibly long fingers. Some of the chord shapes he's able to reach are crazy.
I really love how the chords fit against his vocal melody. The guy is nothing if not creative.
His choice of chords are what set him apart
same with Hendrix’s double stops, to me we’re the song.
I was a music student at North Texas late 70s. A fellow student and guitarist heard Eric in Austin as a teenager. Came back to UNT and changed his major! 🤣 I love this guy no end.
Jimi would be very proud and impressed. Best homage yet to May This Be Love!
Holy crap. I just had to get up and applaud Eric's performance right here!!! Chills!!
How great it is to live in this time.I bought EJ'Tones LP when it came out. You could only imagine back then, what and how these guys did it.Now, some 30 yrs later, you flip on UA-cam and there it is. One of the greatest musicians. Ever. Soak it up, good people.
Hes awsome and I could listen to his tunes for hours...
I want to share something. so my cat liked music a lot. she passed away aged 20. she seemed to like Erics songs so before she passed I played my guitar. ( not like this of course) and she also while sick lay with some of these songs playing. she came and lay near me day before letting me know she was ready to go. must be something about Erics music that my cat liked.probably a daft thing to share but hey why not. peace.
I hope she is jumping in heaven while listening to this right now :D
i think animals preception of things ( like music ) is much more advanced than we know . peace.
Ive seen one of my parents cats (when I used to live there), come chill with with me when I was listening to pink floyd. Usually pre darkside floyd. He chill right next to the speaker even if i left the room (as long as id keep it on).
My old roommates cat used to chill under the neck of my guitar while I played. He seemed to like it. He was a weird little bastard though.
Ive seen somewhere that, at least to our knowledge, that most animals dont have a sense of rhythm like humans do. But I'm not certain how factual that is, and that doesnt mean they don't enjoy music.
@@420Gold it's been proved and filmed that afgan hound enjoyed singing with Pink Floyd at Pompeii. Why not cats? :)
480 thousand views!!! It should be 480 million.
Eric Johnson is phenomenally talented.
Even God could not hit some EJ runs!!!
Incredible musician. Jus as good on the piano too.
I love this guy. EJ , you got some serious soul my man.
+Eric Bolt Everytime I listen/watch his performance in "Trail of Tears" I choke up and my eyes well up, because his tone and playing just blows my mind everytime!
wish i could give 10000000 likes and even that is not enough.......love this what an angel! respect man and best wishes!
Being able to write and sing these songs , whilst playing this well- puts Eric in an exclusive club indeed. Only a handful of guys have even attempted it. That fact alone puts him in the Pantheon, a realm of Gods.
Sail on, brother
Is David Gilmour in this pantheon?
Um no way not ever.
***** Gilmour is good but EJ is incredible.
Knopfler would write play and sing songs that are pretty challenging
SRV
One of the gentlest guitarist ever. Gentle tones and rhymes
I love that you got Christopher Cross to sing those harmonies on the album... you guys sound SO GREAT together. I love this album Eric. Thank you.
I'm back. Just dying to know your personal spiritual basis that sent you off on such an amazing lyrical journey for Venus Isle. Can't find it in interviews. Please respond!!
This is my favorite Venus Isle tune, and one of my fav EJ songs period. I was beaming when he started the intro to it at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI this year. No one really seemed to respond to it initially, but at the end he received quite the ovation.
Got introduced to Eric when he opened for Rush. What an amazing musician.
There's nothing like seeing and hearing EJ live. As good as his albums are, they just can't match his live performances.
The guy is the MANNNNNN This is what the best looks like ^
Knew Eric Johnson only by name ashamed to say..😔 listening to his music for a week now. I`m deeply touched... and hooked .. What a great musician and lovely peronality..
He really is exceptionally good. The chords, the melody, tone and the lyrical style, to those licks really is just amazing.
Luv'd Eric Johnson since I discovered him at 18 ! I'm 49 now and still love his music. :) Peace!
George Chan .
He looks like he's 35.
I didn't even know he was active for that long.
Cliffs of Dover always reminds me of driving my 1989 Nissan Sentra up to Stephen F Austin University to visit my girlfriend back in 1990. Windows down, beautiful sunny day. I miss you, Jennifer. You always felt like home.
@@markcarr5142 , heard "Cliffs of Dover" back in 89 as well the tune made me a huge Eric Johnson fan. I shared the song with my mom, she is a fan to this day at 70 years old and especially loves "Desert Rose". Really great music always brings back precious memories.
Eric is one of those timeless artists that never grows old,nor antiquated. His sounds are revolutionary and very innovative. In his own right, he's in his own class. As a guitarist myself, I love many unique players, and Eric is near the top. of my list, ( besides Stanley Jordan, who also is a highly underrated musician )....
He is a gift from the universe.... let's enjoy it
Eric's playing is absolutely amazing, he is such a legend in the guitar world, but acts nothing like that, I had the chance to meet him in November in Glenside, PA, And he was very nice, though I totally fanned out. Wish this song was played more in concerts I watch and listen to. Thanks to all the wonderful music you put out Eric!
how did u meet him?
@@Philip_McIlvain They had a meet and greet at the venue
I also met him at a meet and greet. Such a fabulous person.
Keep playing eric your the greatest and you music brings light to us all on a dark day we love u GOD BLESS YOU ZORBA NJ
I never herd of Eric until about one month ago. This guy is a phenomenal musician IMO. I could listen to him play all day.
If you get the chance to see him live it will blow your mind. He's so humble, but to me he's the Itzhak Perlman of guitar. Unbelievable.
Yes absolutely phenomenal.
@@MikeLaTorre he’s said for decades he wants his guitar to sound like a violin
I met Eric Jonson back in 1991 at the Bottom line in New York City. He is empathic, sensitive and humble man. When I hear the Sun meet the sky I know the Sunshine in my soul. Is an grand awaking to my spirit!! I pray that Eric Johnson can play for Flood Churc in San Diego. I am so unspoken when he performed!!🌅🌅🌅🌄🌄🌄🐬🐬🐬
I keep coming back to this time and time again. It's such a great performance all around. EJ is the BEST!!!
mindboggling, it is heart.
I love the work he does with Christopher Cross
I've talked to Eric a couple of times after shows and he's always been a VERY cool, laid back guy. Zero ego. When I saw him a couple months ago in St. Charles, IL I didn't get a chance to talk to him but I did chat with Chris after the show and he was the same way.
Yes, this is true.. he is so nice. My friend Bill is his sound and guitar tech
Because he’s from Austin, Texas.
My wife and I used to drive all over Ca. camping and exploring . We wore this CD out, it just meant so much to us. But this song really stuck in our hearts and we'd look into each other's eyes as it played. This is the first time I have listened to it since she passed almost 10 years ago. A flood of memories came rushing back. Some happy, some not. I'm really glad I listened though. Thanks Eric.
This is my stairway to heaven ! This song climbs me so high. Each time the same power. How can I be more grateful than by saying that I can travel the entire universe listening to EJ, mostly when he is transcending scales, tones, chords like that !
Keep on dreaming !
We love you so much Eric! Srsly brother... You have taught me n eespecially my amazing guitarist husband so much!
Pls stay healthy and keep creating amazing peices such as this!
We hope to ask your management to work with you soon!
It would be a dream come true to have a tour with the great EJ!!!
Not only is Eric one of the best players around , but it is his light touch on the fingerboard and the open chords along with his elegant use of effects like the flanger he uses. He use's the effects like Rembrandt used a paint brush on Erics musical canvas. He is such an elegant player and a great singer. I cant get enough of his work to be honest. If you know who Steve Morse is , he is similar and so different you just love whatever he plays.
jon lennon Best comment i read so far... the comparison between Eric and Steve is very well observed.
No wiser words were ever spoken
@Berliner Stadtschloss Maybe so, but he's no Justin Beiber (thank God).
Your description and analysis is spot on our John
jon lennon I think it’s just modulated delay...

This whole band is of impeccable quality. Good up tempo drummer and incredibly disciplined and elegant tasteful playing by the bassist. Also Eric has a good voice but to keep that together with his playing is something amazing. Very soothing and warming song. One of the very best on YT imo!
This is my favourite trio I've heard him play with. Definitely more than just 4/4 blah blah blah.
I saw him in Tucson a few years ago at the Fox Theatre and will never forget how awesome he was, tight band and that unreal Tone. he will always be Eric Tone Johnson to me TJ for short. sorry I missed you this year. listening to the ISLE cd lately . go TJ
FANTASTIC - Absolutely fantastic.
Absolutely astonishingly beautiful music. Just amazing. I am so thankful for people like Eric Johnson, for being so dedicated to what they do. And the thing is, this man will be able to do this long into old age, because I think the pureness of his love for it spiritually transforms him.
Go ahead, and laugh at what I just said. I believe it.
Nobody's laughing, we agree!!!
This music washes over one like a lover's embrace, wrapping one in comfort and love and harmony and peace. Cannot get enough.
Best clean tone ever created.
I watched this performance like 100 times.
I read an interview back in 1986 where the interviewer asked Eddie Van Halen what guitarists he listened to; Ed said he only listened to a couple: eric johnson, allen holdsworth and at the time Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert.
he said he was listening Eric Clapton.
wolfieziggy19
***** He listened to and admired Eric Clapton when he was learning guitar; the interview I referred to was in regards to who he was currently listening to.
Allan Holdsworth is the best guitarist ever imo.
Eric Johnson and Paul Gilbert....two big monsters legends......
Very good singer too...incredible.
i feel like i'm floating through the sky on a sunny day
One Word...Incredible! We Love You, Eric! Magnificent! My Man! Many Blessings Your whole way!
he just plays so beautifully
Johnson , the perfect guitar player ,very clean player , can play anything , great sound ,
The whole package
Unique. And what a beautiful song. Like boats in the harbour, bobbing about in the morning sun
It's wonderful to see a master musician at work.Thousands of gigs and relentless practice has made playing difficult passages like second nature for Eric. Total joy to see.
He is so very underrated!! Always has been so underrated!
Eric - Thank you so much for inspiring me.
What's happening Bill... It's been many years since I use to come see you Cosby, Mike, Ritchie, and Chip aka Max Turbo at a bar near Va Beach, It was so loud but clean, The song Defcon 1... My girlfriend hollered to Yawll to play that song "Deaf dumb blonde".. Those were the days! Take care man, Troy aka Shmullet.
The level of musicianship shown here is practically unreachable. Astonishing piece of music.
Such a great groove. He can mix these beautiful melodies with powerful solos better than anyone on Earth
A true God.....love you EJ.
That fretboard is the most evenly worn one I've ever seen.
eric johnson is a great inspiration to me...i would go to the ends of the earth to see him in concert
Jesus! Every time I think that I'm not that fond of an EJ song, he draws me in with his musicality and damn, is he good!
Being able to sing and play that at the same time is the stuff of immortals! Wow, the godlyness of this performance...
+Loddentidster I agree. I play guitar too-nothing like him though, and if I play anything and sing at the same time, it is usually something pretty basic.
Another musician who can play well and sing well at the same time
is John Sykes (ex-Whitenake, Thin Lizzy) Check out one of his solo shows.
Eric is a more amazing songwriter though--this stuff is absolutly brilliant and
spirtually uplifting. One of the most musical players I think, nobody quite like him
+Loddentidster Playing the guitar and singing is effortless for me , HOWEVER , playing the drums and singing, NO WAY. When you get older your voice changes , plus all the years of stressing the vocal chords. The voice is truly an instrument in itself. Bless.
This dude is a legend
Makes me feel when I'm driving in the country on a beautiful day and taking it all in
I don’t see two Eric but I can hear wonderful voice and smooth guitar sound beautifully combined
I never tire of EJ. His performances are always captivating.
My favorite guitarist since the late 70s wish i could see you and shack your hand in thanks for all the years Sir.
Just to say that it´s amazing, one more time!
one of the best i have ever seen to Eric..i felt like im in heaven really!!! intro was amazing and the clean guitar sound makes me so relaxing..melody,harmony, and voicing of the cords plus his technique are really amazing..................
Yes, unique style, unique playing, unique music. : )
Eric, one of the best ever.
It's amazing what comes off his guitar. Beautiful
Eric your biggest treasure is your ear! Like no one else I’ve ever heard! Love this guy!
LOVE THIS SONG!!! It's transcendent!!
