Cheap speed might not be as cheap as it used to be, but there's still plenty of fun to be had at a moderately affordable price point. Are there any other fun cars you'd like us to test that won't break the bank? Let us know in the comments below!

I suppose the gimmicks appeal to the younger crowd as I prefer a car that communicates what the tires are doing. Korean quality has been suspect & you know every younger driver will push the car. Elantra N. My 24 yr old daughter bought her own brand new '22 Elantra N almost two years ago, as a present to herself for landing her first real job out of college. It's identical to this one but with the 8DCT. She tells me she has timed a 0-60 of 4.8 sec using the on-board timer, and I know other people have been able to do this with the 8DCT as well. The 6MT is *capable* of hitting 60 in a little over 5 sec, but 6.4 is probably a better reflection of how it accelerates when you care about clutch longevity, though. It's a great little car that can actually be very economical on road trips, too, while oozing character and punching above its price with all the right noises and a presence the others can't match, IMO. The exhaust pops and farts are the icing on top. It's a little too much for me these days but I realize I'm not the target buyer and that's fine. For the money, it's pretty hard to beat if you are looking for a car like this.

I dont think these cars were tested well but the elantra N is still a great deal but at the end of the day, its still a sedan with sedan drawbacks. It has power, but you can feel the 3.3k front-heavy fwd loose chassis compared to the much better balanced 2.8k lbs rwd stiffer chassis in the brz or 2.4k in the miata. I guess it comes down to what kind of driver and lifestyle you have. 4 doors is a big convenience but generally 4 door sports sedan drivers dont really care about cornering, mainly straight line speed and looks.

Recently I went to test drive 2 sport cars that received a lot of good reviews from auto magazines and You Tube reviewers: The '22 Subaru BRZ 6MT (similar to the GR86) & the Elantra N DCT, and these is what I noticed: GR86/BRZ: very light weight with great handling, quick engine, very precise shifter and good steering wheel, nice looking cockpit with analog displays, and great seating position, OK exhaust sound. And on the Elantra N. Crazy power, great nimble handling, DCT shifts were great, suspension adjustability was great, exhaust sound was OK, it made me felt nervous when other driver was driving it. For sure is way faster than the GR86/BRZ, great adjustability of features on the display and great seating position. It has better cabin space and trunk space. Some FWD jumping presence while stepping on the gas from a stop. A crazy entertaining ride.

Based on my test drive of both type of sport cars, I would define them in few words: '22 GR86 / BRZ: Are more matured analog great handling cars (like a dependable horse). And the Elantra N is the pocket rocket, tech toy car in which you can explore its limits with multiple settings (its more like a wild horse). Both types of cars are fun machines but on a different way.

I really hope the next generation Mazda3 and Mazda6 can encompass more Miata driving purity with plug-in electrification and a double helping of lightness.

I'm way late to the party but I have some input as an almost 3 year owner / college student of a 22 civic si. I had my dad's crv until a real bad accident not of my fault and as a 20 year old with a big check wanted something fun. It's a lot faster than this 0-60, I typically get around a 6 second, however it heat soaks bad so they likely did their test in a hot climate. In less than 3 years I've put 40k miles on it, I road trip to home frequently and it does that. If you don't care about numbers, it is a brilliant car. Super fun to drive, but I can road trip it comfortably with everything I own as I move from different student housing. The new civic interior is the best in the price range, and the Bose speakers are genuinely good. Another point is mpg. I feel the 1.5L is a great mix of daily and performance - its way faster than economy cars but I still frequent 40-45 highway mpg, which is reaching Prius level. However, once I graduate this upcoming year and get my first "real" job I plan on getting an Elantra N. For the money, it is the best performance you can buy, it is way faster (like all these cars) than the test suggests. I test drove an Elantra n line before I pulled the trigger on the si, and the interior is significantly worse. I just care about performance and once I'm done with school I'll be moving to an area with lots of tracks and want a car that'll handle it better. If you don't care about track / numbers, the si is the perfect choice.

If you want to autocross, the BRz is probably the better choice, with some decent tires, it is hard to beat. If you want hit track days, the Elantra is the clear winner, it is faster and fade-free right from the dealer lot. As a daily, the Elantra with the DSG is even faster than the manual, has plenty of room for 5 people and their stuff, and can switch from an eco-commuter to a back-road demon at the push of a button. Both offer a lot of tuning potential, but the BRz will always start as a compact RWD sports coupe and not a family sedan. They are two very different animals, both are just great. And the Miata is well, a Miata, can't go wrong there ever. And the Civic is a Honda, for the budget-limited, its only some tires and sway bars and a tune away from greatness.

I absolutely love my ND3 Miata GT manual soft top. It's the best overall sports car in this lineup because it offers comparable performance, but it's the only one with a drop top and that puts it in its own category. I test drove the RF, but don't recommend it. It may look a little sexier than the soft top to some, but in my opinion it's a worse experience in every meaningful way... it has way more top open wind noise, painfully slow top operation, $2800 more expensive, 112 lbs heavier, and poor rear visibility.
Also, the body roll is intentional. Mazda wanted the car to be comfortable on back roads, which is where 95% of owners drive it, and they wanted it to have dramatic handling to add to the excitement. Personally, I'd prefer it be a bit flatter in the corners, but I do appreciate how comfortable the ride is. The Miata was never intended to be a track car, although you can turn it into that if you choose. Its mission has always been to offer maximum enjoyment on a curvy back road and it truly excels at that.

I'd like the BRZ/GR86 more, but the sound that engine makes is abysmal, to me. I can't get over it. I'm not going to judge those who like it, this is very subjective, but I can't do it for me. On top of it, the BRZ/GR86 are much more a track oriented drivers cars, and yet the oil starvation issues they have make them incredibly concerning to track.
I barely fit in a miata at 6'5, and I'm going to get one. The body roll is a great tool for practicing driving mechanics off track, at safe road paces. This is massively overlooked, in my opinion. Plus, it's the only convertible here - I get why this is overlooked, but it is a glaring difference between these 4 cars.
I'd like to say as well, tires make a massive difference in feel and track times: and they're considered consumables (especially for track, where these tests matter the most). I'd never buy a Civic in my life, but it's unfair to compare in this way with shitty tires on it.

Weird that Honda has refused to improve the performance of the Civic Si. Doesn't have to be power, do something interesting for it - torque vectoring, RWD/AWD, lighten it, anything. It hasn't improved in the past 10-15 years. Miata is too wallowy and soft, would really benefit from a stiffer coupe version with more power/top end and better suspension. Agree with the BRZ and Elantra N being the standouts. I've owned a 2nd gen BRZ for 2 years and absolutely love it in the right settings (track, autocross, canyons). Elantra N looks fun in a different way and as a bonus you get 4 doors/usable rear seats. If I needed more practicality, I'd consider the EN (or likely FL5 CTR) over BRZ.

I found that you guys were ragging on the Si too much. Sure the stock tires are whatever, but the Si makes the best sport daily drivers out of these cars by far. Do I think Honda should increase the performance, yes. However since the Type R is exists Honda lets that do the heavy lifting in the performance segment. The Si is the best bang for the buck as of right now in Canada (more standard equipment then the US model) - I'm not sure why people are paying markups on these cars though, I paid MSRP for mine.

    Civic Si MSRP: $29,100
To get a set of summer tires, $1200 (you can keep the all seasons for the winter).
A K tuner to bump you up in power (no other mods needed) $650.
    Total? $31,000.
I would then add better antiroll bars for around 600$ for a set, and it would be great.
    GR86 MSRP: $29,300
The base comes on all seasons, so you need a set of summers, for $1200.
A Cobb Tuning Stage 1 Kit: $595 , or a DE Tuning for $350. Both add about 15hp (maybe more with the E85).
    All in all, Same price.
Elantra will break at 20k miles, cause its a hyundai.
The Miata if you want a convertible.

I ended up choosing ND Miata (again) when it was time to replace my NA Miata. No regrets. Everyone seems to love the Elantra N and I love the way it sounds, but it does not inspire the "look back" while I'm walking away from it. It drives great, sounds great, but the design is just ugly in my opinion. I hope they make another generation that improves on the looks before everything goes electric. BRZ still looks great, but without having a dropable top, it's not the complete driving experience for me.

Look. You have to turn off traction control in the si to get a good launch. If it's the same as the previous generation it's like a cheat code than you shift fast into second. Ease it into third I've noticed it doesn't eat it as well. I mean don't need to shift slow just don't do it as fast as possible you'll notice it after maybe 50 times or so it'll start to hesitate the throttle for a sec. I've gotten a 6 second with not so good tires. I find it launches fastest with wheel hope. You obviously let the car bog on the launch which lead to the 7.7 second 0-60

With the newly and returned Civic hybrid out, the Civic hybrid makes 200hp and 232lb-ft of tq off of a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine paired with a twin hybrid setup making it the 2nd most powerful Honda Civic behind the FL5 Civic Type R and the Civic Si. That being said, the Civic Si needs a straight-up performance upgrade. If it still wants to be competitive, it has to move away from the low 200hp range and climb to 230hp range. The old AP2 S2000 had more hp than the current gen Civic Si. The current gen Civic Si should have S2000 performance at best with 230hp and at least 210lb-ft of tq. Honda cannot and should not rest on their laurels and be content with the Civic Si sedan. They are really going to have to step Civic Si up to the next level when it comes to the 12th gen Civic Si.
The Subaru BRZ has been said numerous times that it needs a turbocharged version. Maybe many BRZ owners might be right, but Subaru refuses to give them that, but Toyota might give them that for a 3rd generation GR86 as the BRZ will be ending production after it's second generation, but the GR86 will live on in a 3rd generation on a Lexus car platform and could get the 1.6T 3-cylinder from the GR Yaris/GR Corolla.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is ready for its redesign with the NE generation. It's about time for the next gen Miata to crack the low 200hp and low 200lb-ft of tq. In fact, the performance that the Civic Si has currently is what should be on the current gen ND3 MX-5 Miata or go on the next gen NE MX-5 Miata.
The Elantra N has just got its mid-cycle refresh and they say its 2024MY (and eventually 2025MY coming soon) drives and performs a whole lot better with the updates and upgrades it has than its 2022-2023 first cycle. While the 2.0T engine on the Elantra N is coming to its end after this generation Elantra N, the next gen Elantra N is set to get the bigger 2.5T engine out of the Sonata N-Line and the rest of Hyundai's portfolio that uses the 2.5T engine which should hopefully make the next gen Elantra N an even better car and that 2.5T should be able to get the next gen Elantra N to the 300hp category with the GR Corolla, MK8.5 Golf R, FL5 Civic Type R, and DE5 Integra Type S.

Honestly it's just the one issue that brings down the BRZ - Oil starvation. As far as reliability everywhere else I would pick the toyobaru over a Hyundai though as this issue only applies when pushing it on the track. Modifications to greatly mitigate the oil starvation issue are slowly coming out so take a look again when you go for the purchase.

    • @Wolfen_Argent
      @Wolfen_Argent 10 місяців тому

If you track it, you mod it to address the chance of oil starvation. If you drive it just on street, you don’t have to worry about oil starvation at all. 100k miles with a first Gen FRS/86 and ZERO engine issues. It’s also slightly modded, but still NA. Just be on top of your oil changes and run 5-30w, as recommended anywhere around the world except the US and maybe Canada, as far as I remember.
