I remember spending tens to hundreds of hours playing the versus mode of the NES version of Yoshis Cookie with my parents. Was similar to the SNES version, but no character select, so everyone had the same basic stats. As a minor clarifying detail about the mode, the special attacks mentioned only happened upon clearing a line of Yoshi cookies which do not act as wilds on this mode. Instead, you started with none. Every single line clear caused one of the new cookies to be a Yoshi cookie. However, clearing a combo (2 or more lines at once) caused either 4 or 5 (I think 5) Yoshi cookies to appear when the board next fills. Figuring this out changed the game for us, as having cookies for attacks moved from once every 6 clears to every other clear. Another small detail, the abilities that you could use your cookies with randomly switched every few seconds, but included both positive and negative effects that could target you or your opponent...so poor timing on a yoshi cookie clear could shuffle your own pieces, or give your opponent extra points. So saving the cookies was sometimes the plan, though save too much, and you may have so many yoshi cookies you can't help but trigger a negative effect on yourself. Gave it a push your luck element which worked nicely. I miss this game. There was also a Japanese only version on the...N64, I believe, which allowed for 4 player versus mode, which is super chaotic...but it moved slower, so I never really got into that version

That exclusive Japanese one actually came with recipes for the cookies featured in game. I'm sure they'd give you ample time to write it down, because I can't imagine someone booting up the ol' Super Famicom and doing it directly from the screen. Seems like it should have also came with a Yoshi cookie cutter, so you can truly make all the cookies featured.
Heh, this game was a big part of my childhood. It's just sweet, innocent, cookie fun. I also remember the cutscenes that formed a sort of story mode where Mario kept trying to get a cookie and the cookie kept trying to run away from him in hilarious ways.
When this came out I rented and played the hell out of it and even came up with lyrics for the BGM, which I didn't know was "You Are My Sunshine" until over a decade later.
Had the NES version. That did not have the puzzle mode, and there were no "characters" in the Vs mode. An important thing to note about the Vs mode: Here he says that you activate your attack every time you clear a line. What actually happens is, you activate your attack every time you clear a line _of five yoshi cookies,_ and you get one yoshi cookie every time you clear a line of regular cookies.
i had the GB version growing up and i played that game all the time, that box art always brings back memories of a time long ago b4 internet and being able to be just mindlessly playing on the grey brick using 4 double A batteries, long road trips across the country and playing til the sun went down and we couldnt play any longer til we stopped for the night, great times, one of my personal favorite puzzle games from that era that and GB tetris...
Was one of my first NES games I played with Tetris, and the Super Nintendo version expands enough to warrant having in your collection. Definitely would consider this game a classic.
I remember getting this game for my 7th birthday. We loved the little intermission animations between stages. Thanks for not crapping on it for being a simple puzzle game!
I always liked its A theme. It's such a wholesome melody. The game itself is pretty fun, but I usually only play up to the second set of levels before getting bored and quitting.
This and Tetris 2 both had decently long puzzle modes I used to really like. Although I've tried to replay Tetris 2 after years and years of not playing it, and it confuses me on what even are the rules.
_Tetris 2_ is basically a cross between _Tetris_ and _Dr. Mario_ in its mechanics. It's a match-3 puzzle game with your goal being to match two or more blocks vertically or horizontally with each bomb in the field. If you can take out a flashing bomb, it'll take out all other bombs and blocks of the same colour.
@@reillywalker195 I get that there are bombs, but they flash? Sometimes in puzzle mode it feels like it doesn't blow up the same colours, but some times it does. I need to sit down with the game now at some point.
I have the game boy version of it! I was gonna mention the lack of puzzle mode in that one, but you said it at the end, big shame it's missing. Also thanks for explaining how versus mode works, I never understood what triggered the attacks lmao.
It wasn't until this exact moment that I finally realised "Yoshi" was in fact, an entirely different game from "Yoshi's Cookie". My entire life was a lie.
@@erakfishfishfish _Yoshi_ is a love-it-or-hate-it game. I love it. It's tough and a bit luck-dependent, but I've spent hours playing it some nights...
Can you imagine spending $60 on this game? In 1993 dollars? I can. Oof. The exclusive puzzle mode got me. In addition to that mode, the character attributes in versus mode are also exclusive to this version. It's a good game that I had a lot of fun with. But probably not $60 worth of fun. 😜
I think future generations were spoiled by the fact that you could basically get a mid-tier puzzle game either on flash sites or something without having to pay the standard Nintendo cart price for the same.
It was worth $60 back in the day imo. This was a time when n64 graphics blew us away. We didnt even dream of games looking like they do now on console.
Thanks for your content! I had the snes version and wow, that was part of my childhood as well, that game convince my parents that games can also be used that way :D
I remember it always seemed a weird game in the UK. As cookie for us is a specific thing, choc chip biscuit. So the lame joke on the school playground was that it should have been called Yoshi's Biscuit!
The music from this game is familiar from a mode in Tetris DS with Tetris puzzle levels (clear the board with only the available pieces, no time limit). They themed the entire mode after the puzzle mode from this game, it's nice to see where it came from.
Games like these are just a good time and will not give much stress like many other games. Always appreciate your videos and there are many games that I haven't heard about that look interesting to play.
Great video! I usually play the NES version, but have never tried the other modes or SNES version so this video was very informative. Will be giving it a go.
It's funny how you went at the beginning about all the people who knew about the game but never played it, and I was sitting here all smug like "no way man I played the hell out of Yoshi's Cookie!" only to realize I had the NES version which, while totally fine, was basically neutered compared to this SNES release. Not only did it have no puzzle mode, but I don't remember any kind of complex versus mode like that with stats or anything, and the NES one sure didn't have those nice, super cozy Mario World-esque variety of backgrounds. And probably not nearly as good music, though it was totally fine from what I remember. Now I'm actually getting a craving to play the SNES one for once, having always assumed it was the exact same game with no improvements...
Man, the puzzle game craze was real back then. And really, it still is today, partly because it's an easy pick up and play formula for mobile platforms. The difference is that you have Candy Crush pretending that they DID revolutionize gaming by turning the Bejeweled pieces into candy.
Used to put mad hours into this back in the day... I think it is among the most innovative puzzlers in terms of strategy - if you could plan your moves analytically then it became great fun to set up chains of events in a way that other games don't offer. eg. in Tetris or Dr Mario you can only plan 1 move ahead and hope for the best whereas the ability to rearrange existing pieces... I mean, cookies, post-facto changes everything. Highly recommended.
Tried it today and I think snesdrunk's on the spot. One thing he forgot to mention is the annoying beeping if the cookies pile up. Maybe he's too good and that never happened to him. Glad I watched this otherwise I would have missed an enjoyable puzzle game.
I remember my parents buying this for me on my 12th bday in 2001 and was disappointed it wasn't anything else. Puzzle games weren't my jam, but Yoshi cookie was such an addictive bop. Great music and a stellar hidden gem
Yoshi’s games used to confuse me when I was a kid. I couldn’t comprehend how a new character from the super Mario world could be on Nes. At that time I thought that a new console meant no more games for the older one 😂
I rented it. Was fine. Not all that interesting to me but was good. But the cookie sprites did look kinda tasty. As for Yoshi branded puzzle games on SNES I definitely preferred the oddly named Tetris Attack (largely helped by it being Yoshi's Island themed whereas this game clearly has the Super Mario World theme)
Yoshi's Cookie also appears on Gamecube - it's part of a 3 game JP only compilation called Nintendo Puzzle Collection. As well as Yoshi's Cookie you get Dr. Mario(the N64 version) and PanelDePon (aka Tetris Attack). Cookie's graphics are spruced up a bit and there's a Story mode. Each game has a 4 player versus mode. I used to play rent this more than a few times as a kid, mostly for the fun battle mode. The action mode is okay but you always end up with the same 2 to 4 cookies and can’t move on until you get rid of them from the extra cookies spawning in. It can take a while if the RNG hates you.

I suggest doing more of the Japan only puzzle games. So many awesome ones that my wife and I have discovered any way we can.

I used to have the Game Boy version of this game. It was one of those games that I picked up on a whim. It was a lot of fun from what I remember

Never thought I'd hear the words "shut off your mind" in response to a puzzle game, but here we are. I'll take you on in the 2 player mode anytime.
I had this on Game Boy. It was one of those games that was great to have for road trips or long bathroom breaks. Just simple, easy to learn fun.

Great video, Drunk!
Always love waking up and seeing a new snesdrunk video.
Wow I don't remember that commercial at all but it was definitely very 90s.
I have this for the NES. i had no idea the SNES version had so much more on it.

Fun Fact: Hello Kitty's Beads Factory (rough translation) on the gameboy was built around the Yoshi's Cookie game engine, and plays VERY similarly.
I like the cutscenes every time you clear a world in the action mode. Mario running after the cookie is funny.
Certainly a hidden gem for me

I had this game on NES. My mother loved it. Fell asleep playing it many a night.
I unironically love this game. Something about it just gets my nostalgia going. Can and will play it all day.

I think Tetris 2 on the SNES is more confusing than the GameBoy and NES versions (which I really like) so I know what you mean
I see it as a different form of Dr. Mario, since the object is to make the bombs disappear.
