I struggled when I switched from using a SCORE EDITOR to using a SEQUENCER for composing.
The pros of a SCORE EDITOR are that you can see the notes and the different musical layers. The cons are that it's not gonna sound like the real orchestra. You don't have as much control over the sound.
On the other hand, the SEQUENCER gives you more tools to manipulate sound. Plus it's much better at loading big sample libraries and big orchestral templates. The problem is that it's harder to see what's going on musically.
And even if you're able to come up with complex musical textures, it's easy to lose control as you start orchestrating and the session gets big.
How do you compose complex musical ideas fast, while keeping inspiration and momentum going?
Organization is key. and it starts at the sketch level!
Watch the video to see how I compose a complex orchestral sketch and how I deal with complex orchestral textures with multiple layers.
    Thanks for watching!

This reminds me of the spongebob art episode when he explains to squidward how he drawed something.
Sounds great anyway, and it did help me!

I think its not so silly that method, like someone belive. It is useful for composing! Before composition and sound design, who mix with dj software as Ableton or Traktor can understand this method. Great!

Double basses section don't play in octave alone, but together with cellos. This is not a good way to orchestrate the music you write anyway. You have to think for orchestra when writing for orchestra.

Thanks for the comment Luca. Yes, double-basses playing an octave below cellos is a classic combination. And yes, it's very common. But it's also very common for the DB to be playing in octaves alone by themselves. Just to give you an example, take a look at Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé (suite), Op.60: II Romance... and there are many of other examples in classic and current repertoire :) Just yesterday we were analyzing Christopher Young - Spiderman 3 - 2m9 - Harry vs Peter, and there's plenty of DB in octaves and the cellos are doing their own thing...
But again, thanks for commenting! ;)
