Regular squats don’t actually emphasize the quads as much as you’d think. Johnny Shreve has a video about quads as well where he discussed why. Hack squat is definitely way better if your purpose is to target quads as hard as possible. Regular squats are still a top 3 leg exercise though.
Barbell squats are an amazing movement for so many reasons. They can be used to grow your quads obviously. I think everyone who lifts and is able to - should be proficient at them. But there are better options purely from a quad building perspective 🍻

@@oreos2653 For the pendulum squat unfortunately it is quite difficult to find any similar variation that involves free weights or another machine but for the hack squat what I would recommend is smith machine squats trying to replicate the range of motion as much as you can. Dudes often think that you can bias certain parts of the quads but turning your feet in or out. Not really, as 3/4 of the quad muscles don't attach to the hips whatsoever, where the function of feet turning comes from (by contrast most of the hamstrings attach to the hip, so this method can work for them.) Peak midrange tension especially biases the VL (the sweep,) and deep stretch biases the VMO (teardrop.) Keep in mind "bias" doesn't mean isolate, everything else is still working hard. Lunges, BSS, and other single-leg exercises are hax af for this reason. Midrange and lengthened tension are high, and the rec fem of the back leg gets stretched tremendously. I'd almost call single-leg exercises a necessity tbh, but that relates to leg growth in general, not quads specifically.
Hey I’ve been following you for a while I am 53 years old I’ll be 54 at the end of the month I’ve been training for 20 some odd years may be close to 30 I’ve been all different weights 225 and shredded 265 and scary I just had two stents put in my heart and I am going back to the gym next week any suggestions on what or how I should train I probably weigh around 245 pounds right now I’d like to stay between 245 and 255. By the way you are extremely inspirational to my son who was very overweight last December and now he is starting to come into his own he’s lost 30 pounds and starting to put some muscle on
Leg Extension: Makes my knee feel like it will slip out of socket and hurts like hell. Hack Squat: Makes it feel like my knee will rip itself into shreds and shoots pain up my thigh. I haven't been able to do a good leg day in years because my hips and knees feel like they will rip themselves apart. All I can do is leg press and small stuff at a lighter weight and I hate it. Trying to get seen by anyone at this point but it is taking a very long time. What can I do to stop the pain so I can enjoy working out my legs without feeling like I'm about to suffer in a bad way?
Honestly, bulgarian split squats are hands down the best excersise I've ever done for legs. I hate every second of them because they burn like hell, but they target every major muscle group in the leg.
