I own an RSP02T sunburst, P90s. I go for mostly clean or edge-of-breakup tone, in the style of Robbin Ford, John Mayer, etc. In my experience, to get the most out of this guitar and find the right tones for a given song, it is valuable to adjust *all four controls* in combination. (fourth = Focus switch). A good place to start is Position 3 with the volume half-way, and also tone knob half-way (not cranked high). Then adjust your amp to get in the right ballpark. (This will tend to be on the bright side.). Then you can begin exploring alternative tones via guitar electronics, pick position and pick intensity. A big "aha" for me was the trick of reducing the volume knob a little after pulling the Focus switch. This gives a tone that is a bit thicker -- resembling humbucker -- but otherwise the same as before.
Since positions 2 and 4 are a bit thinner ("woody") due to slightly out-of-phase pickups, pulling the Focus switch and adjusting the volume down slightly can really add some sweet thickness and opens up a new territory of tone.
Initializing your amp with the guitar tone knob set to 50% is important. At first, I had the tone knob turned up 100%, but then found it unusable since anything less would sound dull and dark. But if your initial tone has good brightness with the tone knob at 50%, then you have room to add or reduce brightness with it, especially in combination with the volume knob, which changes the tone somewhat as you increase or decrease it.
Last, I think too many reviewers have brought in a simplistic mindset to the switch positions and pickups = "#1 (neck) = rhythm; #5 (bridge) = lead". And they treat the Focus switch like it's a drive pedal. (it does boost the output a bit.). But that mindset doesn't really fit the Revstar, at least with P90s.
    Hope this helps.

Great playing and tunes, man! I probably like this P90 Revstar more than the one with HBs, the pups even suit the overall look better IMO, not mentioning the sounds. My fav positions would probably be simple bridge or neck without the focus feature and then position 4.

      Thank you!
I never played the HB version but I guess you are right - I also agree with the look.

Thank you! Very few videos like yours discussing and demonstrating particular tones. I have the Japanese P90 version and it's worth the extra $$ (to me.) The craftsmanship is phenomenal. But I cannot believe the Standard model is far behind. All Yamaha musical instruments are top shelf (for a mass producer.) Even their motorcycles and boat motors are great. Everyone seems to love Position 4 on the switch! But I think one must be careful with the tone knob and playing hard and loud. on Positions 2 and 4. It can get muddy - but not like HBs. Position 2 is "Plucky," good for Country Western tunes. And you can get really fucking mean with the bridge pickup. I can't wait to try it with a slide.
I like the tone knob for quiet or jazz stuff, as the transformer really does the job. But the prospective byer needs to understand that this ins not a Fender or Gibson, although you can get it to sound like a Telly. In as way, it is kind of a blank slate waiting for you to discover your own sound. I also own a Yamaha BB-744A bass and it is just as wonderful. Hope some of this helps.

Yep...the tone knob will provide tons of variations of tone.
      For better or worse.

Hi, one of the best demo’s I’ve seen on this model 👍🏻.I play classical guitar but want to venture into electric guitars. Would this model be to complicated for a novice and should I stick with a telecaster.

      Thank you very much!
There is nothing wrong with a Telecaster as a beginner - but you can also go with the Revstar, it's not more complicated :)

It is a bit on the thicker side, maybe it also seems a bit more so because of the jumbo frets? But it is still manageable and a comfortable neck for the most part. It's thicker/beefier than a Strat neck, definitely more than a Gretsch neck, and if you like an Ibanez shredder, this feels like 2x as thick. But, it's not as thick as the neck on a PRS SE McCarty 594 I recently tried. That thing was MASSIVE! So, it's maybe between a Gibson and Fender neck, but it's a bit hard to say that without exact measurements because of the frets coming into play, and, the fretboard radius can affect the feel, also. I thought it felt quite good overall, I'm just trying to decide if I want to purchase because jumbo frets are not something I'm quite used to, so when sliding on the neck, I "feel" them quite prominently, you know? But, overall, the guitar has a LOT going for it! The satin neck is nice, also.
