This is Bluegrass at it's best. I grew up listening to Bluegrass music and as a kid my dad would take us to Bluegrass festivals where I met Flatt & Scruggs, The Osborne Brothers, The Stanley Brothers and many more. I now live in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, where my father was born and raised. There are still Bluegrass jam sessions being held here in the mountains and it is a lot of fun. The talent that you see at these back woods shows is incredible.
Earl Scruggs, banjo - Glen Duncan, fiddle - Randy Scruggs, acoustic guitar - Steve Martin, 2nd banjo solo - Vince Gill, 1st electric guitar solo - Marty Stuart, mandolin - Gary Scruggs, harmonica - Albert Lee, 2nd electric guitar solo - Paul Shaffer, piano - Jerry Douglas, dobro - Leon Russell, organ - Glenn Worf, bass - Harry Stinson, drums

In case no one has told you the gentleman on the piano was Paul Shafer(sp) from The David Letterman Show. The gentleman sitting down was Earl Scruggs. He was one of the most famous banjo players ever! You should react to more of his work. Vince Gill was on the electric guitar and Marty Stewart was standing beside him playing the mandolin. One of Earl’s sons Randy was also in it playing guitar.
Also the white haired guy playing banjo is the actor Steve Martin. Guy that played pink panther, dirty by the dozen and many other movies I can't even think right now.
Don't forget leon russell on the key board there ( guy with long white beard and hair. The guy that wrote qnd sang the song " a song for you" which most people think donny Hathaway wrote and sang but it's leon Russell's song. I could set here for hours qnd talk about all these legends in this one video. Awesome reactions keep it up
Yes that actor is Steve Martin. He's won 5 Grammy awards. 2 for his legendary comedy albums in the 1970's. I'm now 62 years old and remember them well. He's won 3 more for Blue Grass music. Playing with Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. Great stand up comedian, actor and blue grass musician. He is one talented man.
A surprise for you! The songwriting legend with the long silver hair and beard is Leon Russel. He wrote so many hit songs! One you would know is: A Song for You (Donny Hathaway); Superstar (The Carpenters and Luther Vandross).
This was fun! The actor playing the banjo is Steve Martin and he did do a few movies but he used to do a lot of stand up comedy too. He is the guy in the SNL video of King Tut. Thanks Greg!
This is standard blue grass instrumental. I’ve been hearing it my whole life. This was a great performance by all the musicians. enjoyed your reaction, good job.
This is the type of tracks that let you experience basically EVERY SINGLE STYLE OF PLAY. The fiddle using the bow, you got guitar "strumming", not to mention "plucking" with "slide guitar" action. Plus different instruments to bring in different sounds AND seeing some unexpected talent from people.
Depending on what part of the country you grew up in there are several different terms". "Square Dancing" "Clogging" "Flat Footin". The actor/comedian is Steve Martin who has his own Bluegrass band the "Steep Canyon Rangers". You should definitely check them out since you liked this song so much! Great reaction young man!🤠🤠🤠
Just an FYI, the banjo originated in Africa as a gourd with strings on it. Earl Scruggs popularized that style of banjo playing in the 1940s. Steve Martin, comedian and actor, was playing the second banjo. Paul Schafer, band leader on David Letterman's show, was the piano player. The first guitar player was country star Vince Gill. The mandolin player was Marty Stuart, another country star.
This was an amazing performance. I'm going to second the suggestion earlier in the comments that Vince Gill and Marty Stuart are both worth checking out. My suggestions: Oklahoma Borderline --Vince Gill Pretty Little Adriana --Vince Gill Marty Stuart --- Hillbilly Rock
Earl Scruggs (the banjo player in the middle) is a LEGEND. He was one of the founding fathers of bluegrass back in the '40s, when he was doing stuff on the banjo that nobody had ever heard before. "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is his signature tune.
Never get tired of this vid! So much talent on that stage; best of the best, right there! DANG! Great to see you younger folks listening to this stuff. The world would be a better place if more people listened to Bluegrass!
Clogging from the Southern Appalachian Mountains aka as flat footin in other parts. This is a very old instrumental from the 60s when Lester Flatts and Earl Scruggs played together all the time.
This is real bluegrass music, there are so many great player's in this video, the guy in the brown jacket or shirt is Vince Gill, piano player is Paul Shaffer, FROM the David letterman, show back in the day, actor Steve Martin, on the banjo and Marty Stuart, playing mandolin, Leon Russell, playing piano, with the long beard, old man in middle on banjo is Earl Scruggs, so many great player's
Bluegrass came from the music Scottish & British immigrants who settled in Kentucky and other Appalachian areas . The fiddle , guitar were the most prominent instruments used , later the bango became popular with bluegrass musicians.
This song was written by Earl Scruggs and was used in the movie. Bonnie and Clyde in the 60s. It’s called a breakdown team where it is played fast. If you will watch the movie Bonnie and Clyde with Warren Beatty 60 version you’ll see it in that movie.
You should listen to the original by Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs . They also did the intro music for The Beverley Hillbillies tv show . So much talent on that stage .
Thanks for reviewing this! You might also want to google "Five Men with Banjos Who Know How to Use Them." It was the same piece done on the Letterman Show, including Scruggs, Martin and Schaeffer, but with a stronger focus on the banjos.
Dig Leon Russell in the background, just quietly (as opposed to Paul Schaffer 🤣) groovin' away. What a cool cat Leon was. PS - love your reaction to Paul Shaffer, the dude on piano and having a good time!
With this song, most everyone gets a chance to solo. They can do the original or improvise during their part, as long as they are finished at the appropriate time. Top notch musicians on this version, as others have mentioned.
It would be considered square dance music. Back in the day, following a mountain breakdown was one of the original songs of Lester flattened Earl scrubs back in the day. This song has been covered and redone by many many artists just a great instrumental
You think the finger movement is insane in this check out Billy strings "dust in a baggie" from the grand ole Opry or Michael Cleveland "Lee highway blues" live ...insanse
You really should React to the Steeldrivers with Chris Stapleton singing lead . I suggest the Blue side of the Mountain & If it hadn't been for love .. both 🔥🔥🔥
This song is most famous for being the background music behind the car chases in the 1967 movie "Bonnie and Clyde" starring Fay Dunaway and Warren Beatty. It is not wonderfully accurate but is fun watch.
If you love the banjo work here. Try watching a Ralph Stanley video. Ralph was called the Dr of bluegrass. People clogg to music like this. I was raised on bluegrass music, and at 40 I still listen to it.
I did not know this but I believe it should be noted, and thank you for creating it! "The modern banjo derives from instruments that have been recorded to be in use in North America and the Caribbean since the 17th century by enslaved people taken from West and Central Africa." Wikipedia
Everyone in this jam session is a major legend in music/acting
Steve Martin. Comedian, actor AND banjo player! He used the banjo in his standup comedy shows and really wowed the crowd with his skill!
The gray haired banjo player... very respectable banjo player I might add!
This is Bluegrass at it's best. I grew up listening to Bluegrass music and as a kid my dad would take us to Bluegrass festivals where I met Flatt & Scruggs, The Osborne Brothers, The Stanley Brothers and many more.

One of his past musical jobs was as the lead singer for Pure Prairie League...
All GOATS!!!! Love some Bluegrass every now and then!
There's a lot of big names playing in that room! Steve Martin is the actor you're talkin' about; his other talent is playin' the banjo!
Steve Martin has a few albums out, and if I’m not mistaken was at least nominated for a Grammy, although I’m not sure if it won.
