  • In this insightful video, Scott Hall discusses the art of pruning eucalypt in a syntropic agroforestry system.
Eucalypt trees are a popular choice in agroforestry systems, thanks to their rapid growth and hardiness, but they can become unruly if not pruned properly.
Scott shares his expert knowledge on the benefits of pruning eucalypt trees in a syntropic system, including increased biomass production, improved soil health, and better crop yields.
He also provides a step-by-step guide on how to prune eucalypt trees correctly, including the best tools to use and the optimal time of year for pruning.
Whether you're a seasoned agroforestry practitioner or just starting out, this video is a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their understanding of pruning techniques for eucalypt trees in a syntropic system.

Thanks for taking the time to share and explain. I would add to work towards a direction such that the larger pieces (and log wood) get covered with finer material so they begin decay faster.

This is so valuable to see, I would have just loved to seen where did it come from so I can understand where on the row you are putting it back to. Was this a pollard about shoulder height?

Thanks for the detailed explanations, Scott. Question: what are the intervals in which you can coppice eucalyptus and also acacia mangium? I work more with acacia and do not yet understand how long it takes to regrow after full coppicing (Am only in my second year of establishing the system).

Hi Antje, I allow a full recovery where the plant has enough time to put on at least as much biomass that it had previously. A good indicator that it is again ready to prune is the bottom branches become dead or weak (senescence)

Hi Scott, at what time of year would you prune eucalypts like this? Im aiming at coppicing some eucs and would love to get the best possible yeild
Ive heard some people say mid summer is best due to it being the time when eucalypts are apparently more dormant. Others say prior to the first rains after a dry period, and some say early spring.

It all comes down to observation, but observe the growth curve, prune when the plant is going into its strongest growth phase of the year, that means it can fully recover

@@syntropia_regenerator In that case, would you be saying to prune just prior to the next big growth phase, or mid way while the sap is already running?
Some say that eucalypts heal the best when the sap is running, but my aim is for coppice mainly, so I would like to encourage shooting.
I'll probably end up trying a few different times but would appreciate the input.
A lot of the agroforestry guys suggest to cut before autumn rains, but this would be the beginning of the eucalypts slowing down growth in my case, and I worry about the root health.
      Thanks

@@Rudiarius88 I would experiment to be honest, as it has to coincide mostly with your production. I would just keep away from heavy pruning when they are dormant
