  • Small EVAP leak on Mazda 3 caused by failed Canister Purge Valve Solenoid. Car had CEL on with code P0442 before this fix. Car had 155K miles on it driven on salty roads and didn't want to risk breaking parts lowering rear subframe... So I did a hack job and fixed the leak - code cleared after the fixed.

Pretty innovative solution. I can't believe how hard Mazda made it to replace this part. Dropping the subframe is a major drag if you're working without a lift. It would have been great if Mazda had installed a handy access panel similar to the one under the back seat for access to the fuel pump. Still debugging P0442 but if it's my vent solenoid I think I'll copy your approach. I'd love to see a better close-up after hole is cut to see orientation of part. It's hard to tell how difficult it was to remove nuts & hoses. Thanks for posting!

Unfortunately, I don't have any closer shots of the bolts and their locations, sorry! Thank for watching!

I probably won't buy another Mazda because of their idiotic engineering ... unsure who to blame, Mazda or Ford

the camry charcoal canister is in the engine bay (the old school gen 3 and 4 ones). Wonder Why manufacturers would do this shit on newer cars

Did this today. It works. Thanks for the video. I cut it 6 inches. Got to be careful with the top cut because the wiring harness is right there.

Very innovative... Almost worth leaving it as an access pannel

I'm no expert but I believe there is a access pannel on the subframe

How did u know this was the problem? I also have the p442 and p455 on my car but i have seen people trying to fix the problem in the engine bay. Can it be a leak in the hose all the way to this canister ?

The leak could be anywhere, to determine where it's leaking you'd have to smoke test the EVAP system.

Can I drive my car without a purge valve?
If I can, will the check engine light still be on?
