- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- In this Cubase tutorial, Dom Sigalas demonstrates converting a stereo mix to Dolby Atmos surround format, including how to downmix to binaural, using the VST multi-panner for Dolby Atmos to place your instruments in space, then moving your objects in space, how to change the width in sound and how to export an ADM file, which lets you share fully-compliant source files. With Cubase 12, Dolby Atmos surround sound is now available to almost anyone. This Dolby Atmos tutorial shows you how to make the most of one of the most exciting Cubase 12 new features.

Hey Dom I was the black guy that came bounding over all excited to meet you at 'Steinberg' stand BMC last Thursday. Just want to say a huge thank you for your videos which have helped me no end and 'keep on keeping on'. Max respect :)
There is quite few nice updates in version 12 but THIS is the main stuff I was really waiting for.
We are finally catching up to Logic Pro.
I've got few projects I will definitely try to remix in Dolby Atmos. :)
Dom that demo track sound great, it's like I'm there and I'm a Atmos sceptic.....
A new mixing subjet to research is always exciting - but always relieved to find Dom did a video on the matter. So clear, no-nonsense, and always sounds great.
It literally gave me shivers when you started to move the strings in "the room"
Great demonstration Dom Thank you
Please do another video explaining the export process.
This is SOOO COOL!!! I will be using this for an upcoming release for sure! :)
Incredible. Game changer!
You're doing a great job with your videos 💪😁 ...but as for dolby atmos, it's like 3d tv, it just didn't work in home conditions. No one liked wearing those glasses. On stereo setups/heasphones, it isn't any "wow" really, and we rarely listen to music on anything else than stereo, and even more, many people listen to music in mono (mobiles, bluetooth speakers)
I think it will only work in cinemas or some audiophile setups, the dolby wow factor will fade out soon, unless we find a way to connect music directly to our brains to be able to listen its full potential, without the need for multilpe speakers and decoders ;) ... But it is only my opinion :)
Keep doing your great work Dom ☺️
Yours is the only rational comment on this thread. Perhaps you've been in the audio game for 40 years, like me? I've seen the fads come and go including 7.1 for video. That's cool but that's a downmix from theatrical productions. In any case, most people will view movies/streams AND music in STEREO. We have two ears and al we need are two speakers. BTW...Atmos format will still have only TWO primary speakers from which to audition program material. The rest is bullpuckey. Not necessary and really, a mid-life crisis aide.
This guy Dom...I don't know, man. He's trying is best...I guess...but if a man never learned how to bias tape and align heads in the studio back in the day....I don't know....He's less than a man.
Wait WHAT !! you changed your trackball ?? is that apple Magic Trackpad ? VIDEO pls ( AWESOME VIDEO Dom, as always, gonna update my cubase)
Great videos, keep them going. Spent a couple of hours remixing some tracks ... Dolby Atmos sounds s good.
Here is a real world success story. Client gave me a Logic mix. I broke it out to stems. Loaded in Cubase and “mastered” each track as opposed to a master bus. Turned on Cubase ATMOS and put the tracks in space. Automation allows movement of the tracks, and track groups all around the room. Used headphones. Rendering to Binaural. Used AWS media converter to make an iPhone audition. Gave back to the client. It blew his socks off. I got his deal, and his album, and his future albums, and all his friends. iTunes distributed with spatial support (which is just ATMOS). It is a game changer. Reach out if you need a partner on this.
Cool!! Can you do video with it please!
Could you please give a tutorial??
Or tell me where to reach you
This update is mindblowing!!
I'm nerding out! Playing with it now. Im seeing if I can get any of my head tracking spacial plugins to work as well.
Your videos are make me Game changer... 👍
Thanks so much for this video @domsigalas & @cubase.
Q: 1) Is there a way to export a file to use as a reference to check on other dolby atmos rated systems & headphones?
Q: 2) Is the huge exported WAV file (3Gb) the same one that can be uploaded to a digital distributor, like Distrokid, for streaming meant to be that huge?
(Or do we still need to buy the Dolby Atmos renderer from Dolby in order to perform these final essential tasks to be able to release a dolby atmos mixed song?)
WOW!!! Best daw! No doubt.
wow, well done Steinberg!
I love cubase... can't wait to try this!
Nice! Does this mean that I don't need any third party software to mix and master finished Dolby Atmos Music-tracks in Cubase 12 Pro?
Wow.. This one nice buddy👍👍
Thankss a lot man
I was searching for it ❤️❤️🇳🇵
Great video as always.
I'm making some ATMOS mixes from stems because my manger says some platforms and supervisors are requiring them now for submissions.
I understand now how to make the mixes with headphones, but how do you check them? I saw one video that says the volume has to be at -18.
And there's no way to master it?
I feel like I'm guessing.
And just for context-- about 10 years ago a TV production company requested a Surround Sound mix of a theme song I did. In a panic I just bounced down the song in Surround sound on Cubase with nothing on the rear channels. Nobody said anything and everything was fine. Soon I stopped getting that request.
I wonder if this is what will happen with ATMOS. It seems like a format for Film soundtrack mixers to use on projects that will play in theaters or special ambient spaces.
In that case the ATMOS mix should not be the song producer's responsibility. Just my 0.02.
Hi. Great video man. Thank you. I have a question, what happen when we have also a fx track with reverb. What to do in this case?
I don't know if this is been screwed by youtube compression, but I still hear the sound sources as coming from inside my head and not at all like an actual binaural/holophonic track (like those recorded with dummyheads). I'm using Sennheiser HD598 (openback phones) and Shure SE215 in-ears to listen.
wow thank you, now i can have fun!
so cool, how do you export the binaural version? or you can only monitor?
NOTE! - it only works with AUDIO tracks - so MIDI tracks need to be rendered in place before they can be added as objects
do you mean only on export? Cause I definitely can pan my midi tracks around with the multipanner.
@@kyleritter3074 I mean before they can be added as objects in the binaural system
Hi Dom,
I'm just composing and mixing music and noises for a movie. Is it impossible to get group and FX channels as objects in the cubase atmos plugin ?
Great! But why only 512 buffer?
thank you so much
Did step by step as you explained but i ended up with no sound playing on the output i dont know where i messed up
Logic has a surround compressor, essential for achieving a professionally mastered output in Atmos. Does Cubase? I can’t find one.
Excellent! So much looking forward to play around with this and some pads i created.
Is it wrong to assume the pararmeters can be automated?
That Dobly Atmos option doesn't show up on my Cubase 12 pro. I go to project but that option doesn't exist. Any idea why? Thank you!
That's weird... It should be on the Project tab
The option is only available for Nuendo 12 You must have both Cubase pro 12 and Nuendo 12
@@Kort_Funes well I'm using Cubase 12 Pro, have never owned a copy of Nuendo, and I get this feature.
@@LeChapeauMusic In both they work for me, the first versions of Cubase 12 do not have that function.
@@Kort_Funes really? Well @Lytos if you've bought Cubase 12 you can always update it, you just can't get Cubase 13 when it comes out.
The different parameters in the extended VST Panner can be automated like any other VST parameter to give movement during the mix.
I had a mix of tracks 5 audio tracks & 5 midi tracks & went to ATMOS & I ran the set up assistant. I followed everything you did Dom but there was no sound & the midi tracks didn't load in ATMOS at all. Can you help me out Dommy? 😂 The midi tracks wouldn't render through normal rendering processes, I'm scratching my head!
Can you import Abiosonic audio files into Cubase and render them the same way?
this is amazing.. i also have to mention it's the first video I've noticed from you that is so clearly targeted to japanese audience
Hi Dom, is there a way to Render the mix into Binaural stereo as monitored? I cant get the signal to another stereo output after the renderer to bounce the stereo output. Thanks for all your nice vids
dom does it matter what your downmix is set to in the renderer during export? or is that only for listening?
I upgraded to 12 for Atmos! its actually sounding nice. Only things i dont like is the "Room" sound it adds, for nature sounds etc its not natural. I also hope Steinberg adds a HRTF option in the renderer so we can choose between the "functions" as the stock one doesn't work for me so no sound behind or above me on my headphones. But maybe i will mix all my music in Atmos to see how it works out. Thanks for all your awesome vids!!!
After this step, can you master the file or is it done?
Interesting. Has Steinberg really managed to make binaural monitoring that transparent? I've watched several videos by Michael Wagner about Dolby Atmos in Nuendo. His setup for moitoring binaurally is quite complicated, whith busses and exrta rendering software.
THat would be great. Most of us will, probably, make our Atmos mixes with headphones. Maybe, some day, I can afford a 12 speaker setup. Who knows?
You're kidding...you think this is viable? You can buy a car or put money down on a house with what you spend on a rubbish Atmos speaker array.
@@J3unG And you act like an elitist joker. I assume that you want to get back to a would where only a few, filthy rich, people were allowed to record and release music?
You don't need speaker for $100 000 a pop to mix in Atmos. The reson that it's unadvisable to MIX using binaural is that it's difficult to judge placement. You can mix in Atmos with any "rubbish" speakers, as long as they are fullrange. If you can mix in stereo with the speakers, you can mix in Atmos with them.
It's not the speakers that matters, it's the person doin' the mix!
That being said, it's important that the mix is checked binaurally, because that's how the vast majority is going to listen to it.
Quick question, how did you combine the atmos audio file with your video, and then upload it to youtube keeping all the atmos file settings?
Is it possible to make objects from group tracks?
I mix film music and audio. How do I test the LFE channel to ensure it is working. In my new setup.
Is it possible to do bineural panning like logic pro, without setting up Dolby Atmos?
I want to create bineural mixes for stereo headphones, how can i do that?
Can you bounce the “Re-Renders”?
do you need any special playback system too use this?if i did this would i be able to play this in my car
Can’t seem to find the Dolby thing in my cubase 12
Hi everyone! Is this feature embebed on Cubase 12 or is it necessary to by an plugin? I'm asking becouse on my cubase pro 12.0.51 the windon Renderer 7.1.4 Ins 1 does not appear. Thanks!
Great video I was waiting on Dolby atmos in Cubase, but I’m unsure… is it required to buy the Dolby atmos software separately?
No. If you have Cubase 12 update to the newest version it should be there.
@@RudalPL thanks, this was my only real reason for wanting to update
@@ihustle7970 :)
Best explanation sir🤝🎮
Is it mac + Windows or mac only?
Great work Cb.
I hope that in the near future the apple converter is added because for headphones is way better than binaural.
Till then, logic still wins this battle.
nope. "...we have isolated the bad guy as Apple for getting rid of our Binaural Render Mode settings and, therefore, distributing a Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music that is different from the binaural mix that we set in the studio.
It is only Apple's fault that they chose not to use the newer AC4-IMS codec that would contain the binaural metadata.
There is speculation as to why they made that choice... "
- Tidal and Amazon use the AC4-IMS codec for headphone playback on mobile devices and the DD+JOC codec only for speaker playback.
- Apple Music uses only the DD+JOC codec which means, all the Dolby Atmos Music mixes on Apple Music don't use any of the Binaural Render Modes that were part of your original Dolby Atmos mix!"
What audio interface do I need for Dolby Atmos
Can you use 4 speakers (and a sub) for 5.1.. using LR to simulate C for a 5.1 setup? I dont have a center.. so wondering if a virtual center where it uses L and R as center can work.
when I use Object on ADM I lose my meter on tracks. what is the difference between using beda or obejects on ADM ?
I don't hear a difference other than left right in this video even with Dolby Atmos on. I guess UA-cam doesn't support dolby Atmos yet? Thanks for a great video though! As always
Hey guys the features Dolby Atmos in cubase 12 pro I won't to know we mix first the music then we render to Dolby Atmos or first we render to Dolby Atmos then After we mix the music?
kind of static - are there fx like surround auto-panner to let objects/sounds circle around the head? or can we record the movements we do by mouse or xy-pad?
I would recommend a surface controller if you're going to do a lot of planning/ play the automation u can map the xyz and all the different knobs two the faders in the vst multi planner most people in film/music use the avid s6 s9
Especially if you have lots of tracks it would be aeasier and quicker to do it with a surface controller👇
ua-cam.com/video/L7lfLMoCl1g/v-deo.html
I see it many times, but in my case it simply doesn´t work. I do exactly the same things, but don´t get any sound of it. Fader are showing sigal, but...no sound to hear:-(
I have downloaded everything and installed, but when I go for Dolby Atmos the Renderer is ok, but I can't hear a sound. I see that sound is on, but I can not hear anything, when I press the play button. Can you help me?
Hi, I cannot hear my audio when i followed the steps here. Help me
If I do the normal stereo Mix... and then, over it, add the Dolby Atmos.... What would happen to the normal stereo Mix when played on systems that are only stereo? (it seems to me that it´s all in one Wav File, correct?)
And automatically, when played on Dolby Atmos capable systems, then automatically it will shift to now play the Dolby Atmos mix??
Can I distribute to Streamers (spotify, UA-cam Music, Apple music....) the Dolby Atmos mix?
Hi, a number of important steps are missing in your demo. I tried to use one of my projets to follow your demo but i did not succeed.
First, you forgot to show where the Vst Atmos plugin is inserted (output channel Renderer). And, in my case the plugin does not work because a not compliant channel configuration. Could you please update or enhance your demo to deal with these issues?
U need to add 7.1.4 you can do this in audio connections. use the insert to dolby-atmos renderer plugin and go to authoring for Dolby Atmos . And choose internal renderer
@@Sheriffvlogs Thanks to trying to answer but the 7.4.1 bus is automatically added by the Assistant, and I do not see where the "internal renderer" option is supposed to be. I will wait for another explanation in a new video (not a priority). Only thing, it was presented as straightforward use of this Dolby Atmos but it is definitely not.
If you go into Studio>Audio Connections, its true that the "Renderer 7.1.4" Output bus is automatically added, but in my case, it did not automatically select an Audio Device. I had to manually select my Focusrite and then it immediately worked.
@@GraziAudio Thanks. I was just looking for the answer to this.
@@Sheriffvlogs Hi, I tried a lot, and hopefully I got it right. Issue was with the process buffer of my audio card (it was set to 1024 where it must be 512). The traffic lights in the assistan are confusing. It is showing a green light even if the audio card configuration is not correct. Most probably this setting is not accessible from Cubase. In that case the traffic light for that should be removed in the assistant.😉
is this for cinematic music and or film music?
For any music
can we export Dolby Atmos in sterio out ?
Like we export. Other songs
No sound with Cubase Pro 12.0.52 with Apollo Twin USB. Any ideas?
Hey Dom, thank you for the Video. I really like the idea of Dolby atmos. However I habe a major question about exporting Audio files in Dolby atmos. I don't understand, what cubase is exporting, when I am exporting a Standard interleaved Audio wave file using cubase' Export functions (I'm not talking about exporting an adm bwf file via the authoring for Dolby atmos Tool). The wave file I exported is about 300mb in size, which is quit big for a 4 Minute stereo Mix. Do you know, what cubase is exporting here und why that file is so big (I'm using a 7.1.4 Master output in cubase, which holds the renderer)?
You export a 7.1.4 file, This are 12 channels. You got to convert it to a stereo file,
@@SOUNTH11composingdesign this makes perfectly sense. Thank you
What do I need to do in order to play the Dolby Atmos mix at my 7.1 surround sound system?
You have to use a interface with 8 outs.
@@SOUNTH11composingdesign Thanks! Is it possible to create a file that can be played via Apple TV?
@@ralphwb60 not now. You got to create a mp4. Just possible with the Dolby Atmos Renderer.
I've two questions and things I'd love to see a video on.
1. Can you export a regular stereo binaural mixdown instead of an ADM file or is the binaural sound you hear from the renderer just for monitoring purposes?
2. How do you use any of the 7.1.4 capable reverbs with atmos? Such as those from Liquidsonics.
The binaural settings off near mid-far, Position, and Planning are all saved as Metadata.
So u will have to export the binaural or record the binaural Separately so u can upload it to a platform that doesn't support Atmos yet.
Just a Quick Question ? once you make your finished Atmos file what happens to this does this have to go to a special place to be mastered into a finished file ? Sorry just really trying to get a grip on this new way of delivering my music for the future.
I have been using Atmos for Nuendo 11 for almost a month now, I did finish a song and mastered it all in Nuendo 11.
But that doesn't mean I am a master at it.......
@@jdisrael7607 Thanks Dom for the reply was the finished output a special wav file or special stereo file .... Sorry for the stupid Questions.. I should no better at my age lol
*Except the ADM export, this reminds me of Virtual Sound Stage 2 VST which I like to use a lot*
its frustrating I followed your instruction but when I hit play is not producing audio. i already check buffers and everything but when I get to the point I hit play nothing is happening I put in Binaural but nothing changes.
problem number 2. trying to export the mixdown and which it does double quick time and the track plays but no sound??
When I try and export my project in Dolby atmos it crashes instantly every time. Any idea how I can fox this?
Why my cubase 12 don't have ADM authoring menu ??
What audio interface/hardware to monitor atmos 7.1.4 and up on the budget side, i have monitors and sub. Thanks :)
You need a interface with 12 outs. One out for every speaker.
on the budget side, was sure i pointed that out,.
Hi, It's not working here.
I'm using Cubase 12 PRO - Mac Mini M1
Settings for 512 ans 48000 done but not create renderer output 7.1.4
What's wrong here???
not sure what I'm doing wrong. i updated 12 pro and got the ADM box but once i render i dont get the same beds box that Dom gets also my whole project now has no sound??
Hi Mark. You need to link the renderer to your sound card in Studio -> Audio Connections
@@polifredroit2 thanks that worked, also my sample rate was at 44khz so that's why wasn't working 👍
@@blokeofkent82 u have to set it to 48 kHz and a buffer size of 512
Great but there is no Atmos renderer in Cubase 12 pro.
is this only for mac?
PCS as well.
Is this only working with an interface with 16 outputs? What if I have only a interface with 2 channel and headset output, which I will use for mixing?
Not an expert but I'm pretty sure that if you add headphone bus as your main audio (in the control room tab) and set the renderer to binaural you will be fine with just any headphones and your current interface
@@electreelife that’s what I thought but somehow did not work. If I do as seen in the video the binaural is not seen nor the beds
Is the Cubase version with Dolby atmos already released or is it just me, unable to find the update ?
Ok just appeared now. Was impatient :) Thanks for the demo Dom!
Edit: for anybody who comes to these comments with the same problems I had: make sure that you are routing to your headphones or your Audio Interface through the Control Room tab in your Audio Connections window, and NOT your Output tab like I was doing 🤦🏽♂️
There should be no connected devices in your Output tab. IDK how I have been living my life this way lol. So much still to learn!
Original question(solved): When I down-mix to binaural so that I can listen with headphones, only the Front L/R outputs are being sent to my headphones. How do I route all channels of the 7.1.4 mix to my headphones?
Thank you, I just couldn't figure out how I should get the sound to my headphones!
binaural is 2 channel audio so it supposed to be like that the same if I was to do it in nuendo or logic the 7.1.4 is being sent to as L/R so it so it's correct
If you're monitoring on speakers it should be 7.1.4 if it's headphones st should be showing left and right
Yes, binaural *is* 2 channel audio, but in this case, it is a 7.1.4 Atmos mix being downmixed. This means that I should hear all aspects of the mix, because special considerations are being taken to ensure that it is a 2 channel representation of a 7.1.4 mix. As soon as I routed my audio through the Control panel and removed any devices from the Output tab in Audio Connections, I was able to hear all aspects of the mix in a rendered binaural downmix
How to setup PHRTF in cubase
48kHz only?
Hi i tried it but i have no Sound and its not as in your Video, can you do a Tutorial how to connect Soundcard etc ?
Go into your Audio Connections, then the Output tab, and where your new Renderer 7.1.4 bus is, set the device as whatever your audio output is (my Focusrite USB device in my case)
@@GraziTheMan thanks i did, but still no sound and the Renderer shows a red ! sign. thats so frustrating. i have newest equipment from RME and all functions are optimal, but not Dolby Atmos. it didn't work
@@Sazzone so after sending this, I realized what I did was incorrect, but needed help to figure out why. Under Audio Connections, the output tab should NOT have a device connected.
What you need to do is go to the Control Panel tab, make sure it's enabled (there is a button to the left), and then set your output device here. Control Panel is now your output route, and not "Output."
