I take it like a lot of Jams tracks as an abstract lyrical painting of society, especially inequality and its outcomes. One of the things I think is most unique about him and artistically brilliant is he calls it all out but rarely if ever writes from a place of judgment, either towards the bottom or top rungs of society. So many 'conscious' rapper's lyrics are on the nose about who's to blame for society's problems and their personal opinions of what should be changed.Jam meanwhile just paints reality in his own genius way and casts himself as a dispassionate, or perhaps jaded, witness who reveals in experiencing all extremes. There's a profound message behind it all but it''s fundamentally descriptive, not prescriptive. 'Eulogy' is another incredible track which I think illustrates this. He mentions rewinding the clock on climate change only so we can repeat the same behaviour but take turns reaping the reward: 'So come we reverse time, drill a ditch, fill it with crude oil and dessert wine, and we can take turns power-sliding into the night riding a shrunken block of ice and return surfing the world blind.' - one of my all time favourite lyrics. I mean who takes a concept as vast and consequential as climate change and describes it as 'power-sliding into the night riding a shrunken block of ice'... its genius manifest.
