      Agree. Explained a nuanced topic dealing with an investigation on nature itself with very concise matter. 👍

    Anaximander's explanation of the physical world without referencing the supernatural, like that of other early material monists, opened the way for much of modern science.

    So, Apeiron can be the god particle from the higgs boson? Does that mean we're still as clueless about that as we were in the Middle Ages and that now we just change the term to 'dark matter' or smthng?

  • @grayskull2936
    @grayskull2936 Рік тому +1

    "some thinkers didn't like how vague and difficult the apeiron was to define"
    Heraclitus realized that, and took it to himself to make twice as vague and obscure.

    A theory of everything is very popular in physics today and is heavily desired by physicists to give an all-encompassing explanation of the universe. Could we say though that the early Greek philosophers of Ancient Greece were some of the first humans to propose a ‘Theory of Everything’? For example, does Anaxagoras, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles (and much more) have a Theory of Everything? Would it be fair or justified to claim that those philosophers all had a ‘Theory of Everything?’
    Another area in Greek philosophical thought that could help with answering this question is the idea of the ‘Arche’. This is usually defined as the ‘first principle’ in metaphysical thought (isn’t this what Anaxagoras, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles did?).
    However, it was Aristotle who first defined this term. So, is the idea of a search for the Arche, the principle, an Aristotelian construct?

    The Apeiron sounds a lot like the quantum wave. It's amazing the amount of intuition that these pre-socratics had.

    When You say invented the idea of Space!!
    There are texts dating way before 10th BC (Vedas) which have accurately calculated the distance between Sun And Earth using Heliocentric Model while Greek Civilization was just born!

    Anybody know the name of the artwork at 4:41 ?

    • @philosophymonkeys1747
      @philosophymonkeys1747  5 років тому +3

      That is one of Gustave Doré's most famous illustrations, based on Dante's Paradiso, Canto XXXI. I selected this image because it represents the 'beatific vision,' and I believe Anaximander had a beatific vision of the arche. I don't know if it has a name, but you may find the image and many others on the following page: www.worldofdante.org/gallery_dore.html

    Wow... the first known person to think of outer space...

    • @philosophymonkeys1747

      Hi Anj,
      Some clarification: Anaximander certainly wasn't the first person to think about the stars, planets or their relationship to the Earth. We know that previous cultures were fascinated by all these things, and developed cosmological accounts for them.
      Anaximander is the first known person to think of these things as spatially oriented, or spread out in three dimensions with vast distances between them; thus, it's fair to say he was the first person to think of "space" as such, even if he wasn't the first to think about stars and planets.
