    Clearly, this is Daniel’s jam hanging with a legend! Happy to see DWs eyes filled with bromance. Sometimes you can see fatigue in the grind... but not at Balcones.
    Jared is an artist who is not afraid to share his genius. It’s refreshing to see behind the curtain to a forensic process.

    So I've been watching y'all for about 2 years and have learned almost everything I know about whiskey from you two. The other day my friend Patrick gave me a shirt from the crowded barrel and I honestly almost cried. If you see this, and when you see him Daniel, just let him know Jason said thank you again. Honestly have never received such an awesome gift. Keep making awesome videos :)

    19:07 Wow, before this point i was thinking 'Jared has such an incredible knowledge and perception of whiskey and what he would like to do with it.' and then he started talking about 'set a release date' and it reminded me of something guitarist Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal said. "Every day you get half way to perfection, but it's impossible to achieve perfection. Even if you have infinite time... you're not the same person today as you were yesterday, and your idea of perfection has changed, so make your work a representation of how you feel at that time and get it out there for the rest of the world to enjoy, so you can move on to creating something else amazing."
    And with that, i now realise creating beautiful whiskey is an artform. I've never thought of it like that before. Thank you Jared for sharing your creations and wisdom with all of us.

    I wish I would have known about blending my own a long time ago! You guys gave me the idea of blending a 50/50 mix of Laphroaig 10 with Bourbon awhile back, and my sipping life was changed forever! Your episode about High West Campfire sent me down that path, and I have tried it with several Bourbons, including Wild Turkey 101, Buffalo Trace, and Elijah Craig, it was intensely complex and savory each time. My senses are not as honed as you guys, but for me, Laphroaig 10's smokey brine marries perfectly with the sweet oak Bourbons.

      Wild River Tom I’ve been digging deep into my Corryvrecken and Lore and I generally prefer Lagavulin so my Laphroig/Ardbeg 10 have taken a back seat lately. I’m definitely going to give this a try. Any recommended starting point?

    • @WildRiverTom1
      @WildRiverTom1 4 роки тому +1

      @@KBGoob You have great taste in Scotch! You and I would get along well.
      If you are like me, I save my favorites like Laphroaig 10 cask strength for sippin" and the regular one for boosting my Bourbons with smoke and love. I think the object is to improve both whisk(e)ys, and I personally found Wild Turkey 101 to really fly with the boost, pun intended. I started calling the Turkey 101/Laphroig 10 blend a "wildfire", a nod to the High West Campfire I got the idea from :-)

    Can we get a episode about water sourcing? I feel like I haven’t heard a lot about it, but I know distilleries like laphroaig have had to go to battle to protect theirs.

    • @AlphaOneActual
      @AlphaOneActual 4 роки тому +4

      Thats the reasoning behind the name of Balcones, Scottish tradition distilleries would name themselves after their water source. The Balcones Fault in Texas is where Balcones initially draws it’s water from for production and proofing. The Balcones Fault is also their logo.

    The blending options but also the option to start going into wine territory with whisky, specific grain sources and “vintages”. Could make for great single cask releases but could make “home blending” so much more interesting. If only the distilleries could go this way.

    So after watching this video I tried something with my "Low budget" bottles and was quite satisfied for a first attempt.
    So here is my mix:
    2 part of Dewer's white label
    1 part of Johnnie Walker
    1 part of Jim Beam
    and 1/2 part of Knob creek
    In my opinion, this gave me a super smooth "Blend" that still lacks complexity.
    Super cream coated with honey.
    But now I really want to break down the barriers and try something else by adding a few years old aging in mini oak barrel to the house.

    Just throwing it out there, get a Caol Ila 12 if you want to add classic scottish smoke to your blend. I found it to be the most easiest and tastiest to blend with, compared to Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, and Kilchoman Machir Bay. If you want to go more budget, get Finlaggan Original, as that (often) is a younger Caol Ila.

    You guys should have stood with Daniel to the left, Rex in the middle and Jared on the right. It would have been like a time lapse video of the a growing hippy. No hair and trimmed beard to long greasy hair and a little more frazzled beard to longer hair and wild beard.

    I didn’t see Rex in the thumbnail and I was worried at first that there wouldn’t be shenanigans.

    Great vid guys. Big fan. BTW, did you notice a little dot/dead pixel on the video? It's somewhere in the middle, about 20% from the left edge? Most clearly seen on Daniel's black shirt when they are testing the blends. I thought it was my TV until I double checked and also saw it on my mobile... camera probs?
