    One time I re-wired my les Paul and thought I was the shit. Then I plugged it in and I could hear an AM radio channel playing through my amp. So long story short dm me for a professional re-wiring

    For all the ultra-modern hi-fi pickups, 400$ boutique pedals and amp sims "that sounds like the real thing" I think there's something so good and true and refreshing in hearing a simple Duncan in the bridge of a Les Paul into a good tube amp modded or pushed with your run-of-the-mill overdrive. If it's good enough for Jerry Cantrell or Adam Jones or Brent Hinds it's good enough for me.

      Rewaxing wont bring up additional treble or output that the JB had. :) JB in Les Pauls is one of the main go to safe pickup swaps one can opt for. Rewaxing would eliminate microphonics, but that's pretty much it.

    I've got an 80's Burny Randy Rhoads. I don't know if it had the VH1 pickups, but I took the stock pickups out and put in a set of Zakk Wylde EMGs. Sacrilege? Irony? I don't know. But it looks and sounds awesome. It has the head stock inlay just like a Gibson and basically everything but the name Burny and the EMGs is just like a LPC...

  • @PantheonLincoln

    The JB definitely sounds more powerful. It's not the same as the original, but more suited to rockier tones than the original Burny pickup, which also sounds good.
    I've heard people say the JB doesn't work well with Les Pauls, but it sounds good here. If the previous owner of my Edwards LP hadn't swapped out the JB that was stock, I may have kept it in. Got Bare Knuckle Emerald pickups in it now, and I've never loved it more.

  • @AmnellAndreas
    @AmnellAndreas Рік тому

    They're similar. But, I prefer the VHII as it has a certain charm to it that the JB just doesn't have in my ears. As someone who owns like 25 MIJ guitars from the 60s up till the 2010s, and have bought and sold a lot of those over the past year and a half, I say leave it stock unless it doesn't work. The JB seems to be a standard for many Les Paul guys , but I personally never liked the tone that pickup produces. If anything, I'd have recommended a Dimarzio PAF36th in the bridge if you're gonna go with one of the two big pickup companies, or a Mojotone 59 pickup if you wanted something more boutique for a lower cost. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference of course, if you're happy then that's all that matters :)

    Hey Fluff, would it be annoying to ask for another chance for Burny's original pickup?
    It sounded so amazing when you added drive, which I found unfair to test / compare it with the nickel cover versus the JB open cover.
    I think the original pickup of Burny deserved another chance with a new application of wax and test it without the nickel cover versus JB like this (without the cover).

    Tone wise, I thought they are both good sounding pickups, but to my ears, the Burny stock pick up was a little softer on the attack, where as the SH-4 is more aggressive sounding, and lends itself better to the rock tones. JB for the win in my opinion. Nice video Fluff, thanks.

    I always found, that reamping the DI of a specific pickup takes away half of the equation. There is an interaction between the pickup and the input of the amp. By putting both sounds through the same reamp box, you pretty much took that away. Maybe try going straight to the amp and compare then? Call it voodoo, but I find, that it makes a big difference.

  • @jsmallsawe

    Might want to check and make sure those pickups were SUPPOSED to be wax potted in the first place. If there’s a nod to authenticity, original PAFs weren’t wax potted at all. Even though it doesn’t work for high gain amps as well, it’s this very thing that allows PAFs to speak in such a special way.
