I remember reading in a magazine once that quoted Betty Carter saying that she really wanted young singers to understand the way she sings, and she really wanted them to utilize their own vocals. She felt they should learn from her because she said she was the last of the GREAT JAZZ SINGERS.
Who's to argue? Her version of her own song 'Tight' on Night Music boggles the mind and her scat with Branford is sheer deliciousness and just in itself a lesson in Jazz singing.:)
Incredible version of this tune. Betty Carter was in a league of her own. Even Sarah Vaughn said she was the best jazz vocalist and I agree! Thanks for posting. Btw David Sanborn always sounds great! He knows how to back up a singer - by not playing while she’s singing.
Phenomenally beautiful Sasha Distel song & Betty Carter makes it into an amazing exploration of existentialism with a breakneck samba tempo- the tempo of the Good Life.
Darrell Grant sparking things up on piano.Ooooooweee
That piano comping is the business!! Damn!!!
I will listen again, and again, and again...
Never thought I would miss the 90's. Reflecting back . . . good music. 'Good life' in many respects.
The best to ever do it, IMHO. And certainly the last truly great, non derivative jazz singer we had.
My favorite show could not think of the name and here it is. Betty carter was just super talent bar none !!!!!
Her voice and phrasing is soothing.
I've always loved her voice and I certainly miss this Show.
