What James is talking about, in a nutshell, is critical analysis/critical thinking. It's where you deconstruct a statement or point of view and look at the issues, conclusions, reasons, ambiguities, sources used; the messenger etc. and layer by layer, and at the end; present a position to those you're in discussion with the pros and cons of what they're saying.
A superb way to learn is by reading "Asking the right questions: A guide to critical thinking"
jesus jones 😡 Apparently you are no ‘intellectual’ according to your own definition! Therefore, how can you criticise that which you despise when you do not possess the mental capability to do so? The fatuous example you quote is just that and irrelevant to the application of critical thinking. Try including ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions to develop your understanding of the application of critical thinking.
No....whats hes talkng about is taking a statement he read in the news and or on a media outlet and making it fact??? thats what he talking bout as thats what he does , spread the latest lie thats doing the rounds!!
You can dismantle the truth with a certain critical approach. An make it look very different.
Thats what solicitors do.
You mean like this: www.cps.gov.uk/cps/news/updated-how-cps-proved-case-against-serial-liar-nick-over-false-claims-vip-child-abuse
"Unthinking acceptance of authority is the greatest enemy of truth" - Albert Einstein.
You can tell by the troll attack that The RSA is doing a great job.
@Truthful Chap Ignore O'Brien! He is not a politician! He has no influence to speak of. Brexit and Trump are doing very well. Just stick to that notion.
You guys need serious help.
What a load of bullshit you guys live in a bubble everyone thinks different
mojopin 70 wow, you’re right. Just from reading your UA-cam comments I have been able to completely deconstruct your personality and diagnose you with a list of mental health problems.
Where do you practise? I’m sure the BMJ would be fascinated by your radical new clinical approach!
@@jerrydelaney6971 Another cogent and Analytical rebuttal I see......
James is a very deep and thoughtful person. He is one that goes deep into people and not putting up with shallow and propaganda bullshit.I love you James O'Brien for getting in deep and not putting up with propagandist and their lies and bullshit.
I come from a very different place to O'brien, I would call my self a classical liberal haha. But I really love what he lays out here. Asking "Why?" is so important. And to call modern day discussion "footballism" I really like. Hits the nail on the head.
James is always on the ball....he dismantles idiots so easily on his show
Pity Jobby cheered on the falsehoods of "Nick."
Hey. Both the sound and visual qualities are way better here than in the full video. Could you consider fixing this?
Poorer the quality the BETTER . . .
O'Brien makes my flesh creep.
Carl Beech!!!!😂
Will the full lecture be posted?
Reframing continually looks effective. Transactional journalism.
Why and the refusal to just accept unsubstantiated claims, are the basis for all improvement.
Bravo
Brilliant use of common sense. Something that is so obvious it sometimes has to be pointed out to liars. Facts are facts. Brilliant.
Common sense is a very uncommon commodity
@@PanglossDr certainly on LBC and amongst its listeners it is . . .
his facts though, he treats his show like he does his sudoku - he trusts nobody checks them then filters out callers who do.
Obrien and common sense are definately two words that dont fit , ignorance and gossip are two words that do when its aimed at him!!
O'Brien certainly showed he lacked common sense when it came to Carl Beech.
I have been asking questions for clarification of statements pretty much all my life.
I have no friends now. Damn that evidence request.
Surely the first paragraph of the written introduction can't be for real ? No wonder I spend less time in the UK these days...
What we are seeing in the UK and the US at the moment, is it a mere loss of civility, or is it a loss of civilisation?
And what are we seeing throughout Europe. The UK is the only parliament in Europe which has no right wing parties in parliament. Look at the AFD..the UK voted Brexit to protect itself from this gutter filth...disease spreading through Europe.
Enoch Powell Not a big surprise with the UK's election system of "winner takes it all' per constituency. You still have enough people with a racist, isolationist, authoritarian and conspirationalist mindset in the country. Just read UA-cam comments to meet them.
For the UK brexit is the final nail in the coffin of am empire long gone.
‘Virtue signalling’ bears further discussion
James O’Brien couldn’t tell a falsehood if it slapped him on the face. Who is he to arbitrate on the truth?
Carl Beech. O'Brien promoted his lies time and again.
Jeez ! The audience !!!!
I could listen to James speak all day. His journey from a gossip column journalist to one of the UK's most prominent broadcast presenters has been astounding. You can tell he absolutely loves what he does for a living and is desperate to understand the injustices of today's world.
I really cannot understand any of the criticisms thrown at James, particularly on Twitter and (Surprise, surprise) youtube comments. If you have listened to his show or have read his book/articles, you'll know that he isn't afraid to debate views and opinions that differ from his own. In fact, he let's people air their position but expects them to be able to back up their arguments with facts. I feel that his haters get angry because they know that James has the ability to destroy their world view using facts and reason.
He champions fairness and justice for all, which can only ever be a good thing, right? So you'd think, but then you read the vile comments written about him...
I'd love for James to get more airtime on broadcast channels other than LBC. He should have his own podcast or UA-cam channel to do what he does without constraints. His series on UA-cam for JOE was great and gave him space to explore interesting topics with fascinating guests.
Finally, I'd highly recommend buying his book. I got it on audiobook and it was a brilliant listen.
Brilliant summary Rax
@@danielr82 He actually gives people a chance to justify their stance with reason and facts. He has never identified as having any particular party-political alliance, and regularly admits to having views that don't neatly fall into "Left" or "Right" categories.
He actively wants people to help change his own views and is open to being convinced that his stance isn't necessarily correct (some examples of this can be seen in his shifting views on transgender issues, obesity, technological dependence, class discrimination, animal rights, religious doctrines, toxic masculinity...)
He "hurls abuse" only when public figures are demonstrably guilty of lying, acting out of self-interest and cannot justify their behaviour. His sympathies are often with people who have been fed a pack of distorted "facts" and who have never had their views challenged.
If you listen to just one of his shows, you'll hear multiple examples of him really trying to understand opposing views with an open-mind. He's also good at calling-out bullshit when he hears it, but does it by presenting provable facts and a well-reasoned argument.
Compare that to the complete contempt that Nick Ferrari and Nigel Farrage display when someone calls their show with an opposing point of view. They don't invest any time engaging with the caller and instead, choose to reassert their own world-view without any attempt to debate the issue in a constructive way.
I think that most of Jame's critics have never actually taken time to listen to his show and instead, rely on clips and vids that are taken out of context. I'd urge you to read his book, as it totally highlights his plight for nuanced debate that is thought-based and not steeped in ignorance or lazy hyperbole.
@@danielr82 it's interesting that that's how you view him. I'm fascinated in these days of divided Britain to see how something that is so obviously benign to me is viewed completely differently by soneone else. And vice-versa. For me, it's plain to see that James is sincere in his quest to unlock issues through intellectual debate and when I hear him speak, I admire his sense of justice and reason. However, that's not to say I'm right. Maybe he is how you view him.
What's interesting to me is the way in which the same situation or personality is interpreted in two totally different ways.
You seem like an intelligent guy, so I'm not going to dispute your ability to listen, make sound judgement and understand the nuance of O'brien's shtick. I too, think that I'm fairly open, rational and can smell bullshit a mile off yet I'm defending James like he's a Saint.
Maybe your partly right, and maybe I am too. I'm just fed up of polarisation of everything into "good" and "bad", "right" and "wrong", "team Tory" or "team Corbyn", "left" and "right".
Even though I mentioned Farrage earlier, I was a bit unfair. I force myself to tune into his show now and again as I don't like to view people as characatures. I don't like Farrage's politics and I certainly don't like many of the decisions he's made or things he's said. But occasionally he says something that reminds me that he's just a bloke who feels passionate about his view of the world. In his eyes, he's a good guy with right on his side. And occasionally he says something that isn't disagreeable.
My point is, I wish debate in this country wasn't polarised into "he's a dickhead" vs "he's a god".
The binary Brexit vote has already divided the nation in two and ever since, I've felt quite pessimistic about our society and its ability to empathise, seek out different opinions and challenge them in a non combative way. That doesn't mean caving in and finding middle ground... It just means hearing the other person's view and giving them a decent chance to make their case. If they can't, that's fine. If they can, I'll be better for it.
@@danielr82 And you've just proven to the world that informed debate can actually take place in the abyss that is the UA-cam comments section! Thanks for the exchange - you make some valid points. Need to have more back-and-forths like this play-out in real-life. The world would be a more understanding place! You're a gent, Daniel! Have a great weekend.
Jesus lets hope your pay for this was fair!
Never heard such a load of tosh in all my life. He has like a million listeners on the 10am slot on talk radio. He has been on the radio for years and he has never got anywhere. His radioshow is scripted the only people he ever has on that disagree with him are chosen for their stupidity. So the great o Brien can try to make them look as foolish as possible.
For years O'Brien has had the 10am slot LBC was not even national radio for most of it!
Great journalist
Love this guy! Listen to him on LBC and hats off when he actually always wants confrontation with people arguing against his points! He is brave and smart! To me he preaches to the converted so he wouldn't be interested in me. James O'Brien for prime minister!!!!! Do it James, you can do it.
It's the greatest question ever asked "why?".

There was a reason.

Hey. These people who just pick a side and don’t listen to anyone else and simply throw down everything from the other sides point of view. Then don’t watch.....what’s on the pitch.....that....that......sounds familiar.......nope can’t put my finger on it
All it takes is a few choice words to beat dishonest people. One of the things I've noticed is how easily you can throw off someone in a debate by saying "Why" or "Prove it". They're so used to not having to follow up their previous remarks, going onto the next question, or being the only person talking, that when you ask for more, it catches them off guard.
He's right but these issues aren't exclusive to the right
Who said it was?
It’s mainly the right though
Amen! Professional journalist need to ask these questions. American journalist are the worst. All the disinformation can be dispelled with asking people what they really mean. Breaking apart their statements word by word.

Hello James, how is your old mate Carl Beech getting on eh? Shame you couldn't expose his falsehoods instead of taking the opportunity to have a dig (while riding on his back) at high profile people, possibly on the political right.
Very brave of you!
Absolute legend i don’t always agree with him and find him a bit harsh on callers sometimes but at least he his prepared to challenge him self and is able to be self critical.
There is health and safety, then there is health and safety taken to extremes
heaven forbid that people should be extremely healthy or extremely safe eh!
I want lower taxes and less politicians and the politicians we do have should be paid less, no perks for them ie government cars, flights etc they can zoom now, no free lunches for them and no subsidies.
No radio DJ has ever won a Nobel prize.
Im a remainer but I don't actually think his argumentative style is particularly strong. He is well informed, which is great, but he does interrupt people more than he needs to, and his style of trying to force an answer to a specific question and lead someone to a point of contradiction is a strategy known to be flawed; its just an aggressive version of socratic elenchus.
I’ve not seen one instance of him being forceful or aggressive at all. Unlike other political interviewers who are very pushy, he merely questions and presses the people he talks to on their opinions and points with respect and diplomacy.
James is spot on
I have to do the same thing most days and every now and again you hear the same thing
“this government has the right idea, we should sand them all back”
“who ?” I asked
“all the foreigners”
“oh I didn’t mean------” I had to cut him off at that point
so I asked “so you mean Boris Johnson as well ? he’s a foreigner”
“ha ha your a joker” (looking around at his mates for support)
“lets google him shall we”
the result came up: Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson born 19 June 1964
Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City
“That's in America”
“not so keen now ?”
he tried bearing his teeth but by then I had handed my glasses to a friend and got right into his face
“not So Keen Now ?”
he and his mates stomped off
it was fairly obvious as to the kind of foreigners that he was mouthing about (non white)
always ask or you never get the full story
I really love this man. Has helped me change my views on so much.
Good job James.

So ask for definitions of people who don't understand the definitions, and then dismiss the words even when uttered by those who do understand the definitions?
The first part, yes. Asking people what they mean, asking them to define things, it gets them to *think about it.*
If you think someone doesn't understand the definition of something, then how better to change that than by them having a good think about it.
James O'Brien seems to think he is the only or one of few who knows how the world works, and talking of small minds, is that one of the reasons his radio show's ratings started to fall a few years ago.
If anyone can find a substantiated criticism of JOB’s points here, or more widely on his show, amongst the criticisms posted here, please reply below.
N.B. - just saying ‘he’s wrong’ ‘he always thinks he’s right’ or ‘I find him arrogant’ doesn’t count.
OK. I support most of JOB's cause but if is going to insist on every fact being substantiated, he needs to do the same consistently. This is not the case: ua-cam.com/video/VhtYYjV6ITs/v-deo.html (05:11)
Well done James. More clear thinking again.
Oh dear James, that middle class guilt really has kicked in hasn't it. There's only one Christopher Hitchens so let's leave it that way, a massive intellect that embarrasses most of us mere mortals, you included. You obviously read too much GBS at the LSE.
The attitudes of his ilk are responsible for the knife crime epidemic in London and the mass rape of children by Pakistani men in towns in England. Their liberal attitudes allowed uncontrolled mass immigration of people whose beliefs are alien to Western democracies.
Can I give an example of the nanny state and health and safety. Not in the UK but certainly in Australia. It is illegal to ride a bicycle on the road without a helmet. Why is that not a decision for the individual to make?
Because the publicly-funded health service has to pick up the pieces in the event of an accident. Because people will not take basic precautionary measures to look after themselves. Because the road is a shared place where people have to abide by a mutually-agreed set of regulations. Because people - on average - are very poor at assessing risk/benefit ratios, and the data shows that they are generally overestimating their own abilities and safety.
Nick Harrison Thank you for saving me the effort of answering that pathetic example of idiocy. You write as if I had dictated my response to you. Sadly we are never to be free from self centred dumbclucks who bleat about anything that upsets them.

You are a tit.
The man is an idiot of the very first order. I can’t listen to him for more than two minutes.
And as usual I stopped watching this quite soon when he went on about taxes. Clearly he has no clue.
The nation’s prosperity depends on comparatively few people. That is the truth. Also those people definitely do not include him.
In order to inspire those few people able and willing to create the wealth the rest of us will enjoy, they need incentive. They need incentive, not least because being the creator of wealth usually requires risk taking and extreme hard work.
If that idiot, whose name I can’t bear to mention, thinks people will risk everything, work all hours and either lose everything if their ideas don’t work or if successful pay most of the rewards in taxes, he is insane, in the literal sense of insane.
And it’s been proved time after time that lowering taxes usually INCREASES revenues. That seems counter-intuitive to dumb bells like him but it’s not surprising. Suddenly low taxes makes it’s worth working hard, creating wealth etc.
Something else the idiot won’t understand. It doesn’t really matter that much if someone is hugely rich. That person can still only eat three meals a day etc etc but the money he/she spends on luxuries provides employment for many. His/her money is (sort of) shared by us all.
Obviously there are limits but in Britain we are nowhere near any limits in that regard.
He thinks he’s clever, but all he ever does is spout politically correct (in other words lies) and sanctimonious claptrap.
We're still waiting for the trickle-down that Thatcher promised us. You know what's trickled down? Zero hours work, schools begging for materials funding, bookies and charity shops dominating the high street.
