Additional INFO = Songs are a carryover from the ancient plays. As the famous director Mani Ratnam says, it is a bridge to take the audience from one emotional point to another. From a low to a high or vice versa smoothly. I admit that there are a lot of unnecessary songs which don't add anything to the narrative. Almost everybody FFs the songs occasionally.But they are also a major promotional tool. They help the characters figure out their inner desires which they aren't even aware of, serve to show that time has passed(instead of just writing on screen "after 6 months") and serve a lot of other purposes. As Indians our lives are irrevocably attached to the film music. I associate all my major life events(graduation,wedding etc) from the music which was playing at the time/or which I was singing in my mind at the time. When I hear the music again years later somewhere else long after I've forgotten it, I get a flashback.
