A powerful spring snow storm delivered about 8-14 inches of snow thus far. The main low pressure system will arrive tonight into Sunday, bringing additional 4-8 inches. More details: bensweather.com/
Bald Eagles are well equipped for cold weather. They have over 7000 contour feathers. They keep them waterproof by spreading the preen oil from the Uropygial Gland located at the base of the tail.
🥚Egg1 was laid 1/25 16:55 bit.ly/48OfNt5, Egg2 was laid 1/28 13:59 bit.ly/3OkpEi7, Egg3 was laid on 1/31 17:58 bit.ly/3SGTwb5 .
It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.

Jackie gets Mom of the Year award and Shadow is just an angel. So peaceful watching him close up like that sleeping. I do see they are indeed waterproof.
Birds have an oil gland at the base of their tails. When they groom their feathers, they get a bit of the oil in their beaks and then groom each feather with the oil. That is what the reason is for water resistant feathers.

She is surrounded in this big donut of snow that Im sure protects them from the wind and insulates them as well. She actually looks pretty cozy & happy which helps me to know they are going to get thru this with no issues! Go Jackie & Shadow!! You Rock!!❤Think Spring!
Some might think watching a sleeping Eagle for 10 minutes is like watching paint dry. I beg to differ...that was the most beautiful scene. The slow breaths, the sleepy eyes. It brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful.

As hard as it is to see Jackie buried completely in snow,i think its probably warm inside the igloo type shelter with Jackie's body heat and waterproof feathers..im praying for warm sunny weather.
I was also concerned about the weight of the snow on the nest. It’s amazing how these beautiful eagles really captivate your heart. I woke up few times last night to check on her. 😊 Sending our warm sunny day, in Australia, to you 🙂

That snow is just incredible. I looked at the nest this morning and saw Jackie just almost buried in it. I must admit to first wondering if she was alive because she wasn't moving at all. Thankfully, I could scroll back on the livestream a bit and see that she had been moving around. I love how Shadow was enjoying a nap and the waterproof feathers are amazing. I also was in awe of the way they blink from the bottom up instead of the top down like us humans, as he slowly opened and closed his eyes. Thanks for another great video, Cali. You are awesome.😊
I was thinking the same thing about his lower eye lid going up to close and open. Not from the top down as humans. I cannot express my feelings enough of how much I love Jackie and Shadow. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing this to us.

I knew a storm was coming to Big Bear but I did not know it would be this severe. I dread to think how the bobbles would have fared, even with Jackie and Shadow brooding. Not only keeping the eaglets warm, but also fed. I'm relieved that Jackie and Shadow are old enough to take care of themselves in harsh weather conditions, like today. 💖🦅🦅💓

My grandmother is a federally licensed birder in the state of Connecticut and I gave her the link to see this beautiful eagle couple and she said that all the snow even though Jackie and Shadow were incubating has a huge impact on the eggs and is convinced that the snow and temperatures are the reason why the 3 eggs have not hatched . I do not think Shadow or Jackie are sterile I think my grandmother is right , I think it has to do with the weather too .

Perhaps this is why the eggs didn't hatch... The baby eagle wouldn't have survived this ongoing winter weather. Cookie died from hypothermia in the recent past...💔💖🌹
That’s what worried me earlier this season. Knowing how massive the snows there can be in March… before they’d have their warm down coats.
