  • Spanish pianist Gonzalo Soriano plays Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 with the NY Philharmonic conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. This Feb 21st 1954 performance was broadcast over the radio, recorded by Reynolds Marchant onto reel to reel.
The program from that performance thanks to the ever-amazing NY Philharmonic digital archives (that go back to the 1860s!):

Unfortunately this recording is not the best. I tried to make some small EQ adjustments to make it less muddy but I’m not sure it made a huge difference. There is a tiny bit of bleed over from I’m guessing another radio station in the quiet moments of the first movement. Also as is typical with these recorded off the radio reels there is a break in the middle. Usually I’ve been able to figure out how to stitch it - sometimes the 2nd side gives me a bit before it ended on the 1st side and I can make it transparent. No such luck with this one. I’m pretty sure the 2nd side was pitched up a bit as well but it was too difficult to tell where it should be so I left it. I think a bit of the 2nd movement is missing. Hopefully none of this is too jarring - not every reel in this archive is going to be as good as what I’ve posted already!
