Great video! Such a good job keeping it short yet covering the full process. I saved this one for future reference.
Excellent video. I really appreciate the detail you provided on how you made your spray booth and racks.
Excellent detailed information. I’m saving this to my wood projects folder.
Yes! I made it to the wood projects folder! 😂🤣
This was both useful and timely. My son and I are building a large shop and a paint booth will definitely be part of the construction. Thanks for the good info.
Sounds like you have a nice plan!
Excellent tips 👏 that curtain gave me the idea I could use the same in my space to limit dust from cutting wood.
Excellent setup, Matt! Nicely done! 😃
One idea if you ever need is to put some sand in the "foot" part of your hacks and put PVC tube caps to hold it in. This way it has some weight. 😊
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
That's a great idea and I have the ability to go back and add the sand!
@@MWAWoodworks Exactly! That's the best part of using PVC pipes for those projects. 😃
This is exactly what I needed. You just got a new subscriber. Very informative with good production quality. Well done
Thanks a ton for your support!
Really good info on the whole HVLP setup. Being a newbie to woodworking, I've only tried a few finishes, and I'm already trending towards low-VOC. Even though I used a top-notch respirator, and was spraying *outside*, lacquer was just too overpowering for me. Thanks for the water-based recommendations.
You're welcome Chris! There are some great water based finishes these days.
Fantastic info and presentation - thank you very much for this helpful lesson.
Thanks Mark!
Super tidy summary of the process! I got a 2-stage Fuji sprayer last year to spray sw Acrylic latex on a custom shelf. Followed a similar process, but brushed on the primer. I’ll use your tips for my next build
Awesome 😎
I just bought a Graco paint sprayer. Not the caliber that you have but I am so tired of brush marks, I figured how much worse can it get! Thank you for your great video, I love all your suggestions and can't wait to give my sprayer a try!!
So awesome!
I really appreciate this video Matt.
Thanks Richard!
Great video. I just bought a 3 turbine HVLP sprayer and tested it. Well there is sanding in my future. Lol. I came across something that I thought was really smart when dialing in your sprayer. Use A piece of glass. It’s perfectly flat and you can wipe it clean. I thought this was a brilliant idea and had to share. New subscriber, thanks for the video.
Great video as always Matt! Your stuff is always really informative and useful!
Thank you Thomas!
Just starting to shop for an entry level HVLP system for projects, and video definitely helped. Thank you!
Awesome! Glad to help!
Brilliant. I’m so glad I found your channel! 👍🏽
Thabk you for the kind words!
Great video! Very informative.
Thank you Jay!
good presentation! I like your idea of using drop cloths and iron pipe to hold them, for creating a spray booth.
Yeah it's been good
Thought I would come back here and re watch this video. Great stuff Matt!
Great video. PVC's an excellent idea for the spraying/drying racks.
Yeah PVC seemed like the perfect solution
This is my exact method for spraying. I haven’t used the kem aqua before only the emerald. I’ll have to try it someday.
Great tips! I've been using plastic and it's a pain in the a$$ when it starts blowing around, the painters tarps will definitely help out, especially controlling overspray!
Plastic is absolutely terrible to deal with unless it's very heavy duty (many mils thick) which is not worth purchasing
glad you linked this in another video. great info here.
👍
killer tips as always! thanks matt!
Great info, very good to know.....thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Great info Matt. You gained another subscriber! How does the graco that you have now compare to the fuji? Also any tips on painting the cabinet carcass?
I was here to provide mercy and walked away with a few good ideas for finishing my newly constructed built-ins. Thanks!
👍
Did you use finish can labels for info on thinning, needle size, etc or do you have some guidelines to offer?
PVC is a great idea. I wonder if a rolling garment rack would be even cheaper
Not sure. Good idea tho
Thank you very much for the information I appreciate You have a blessed day
You're welcome
Loved the tips on finish types. How do you go about setting up your gun?
I use a scrap piece of material to dial in my settings
Thanks for the great video. I've been struggling trying to spray acrylic paint through my 5 stage Apollo hvlp sprayer. I love the setup. I am rethinking my paint room setup. Do you scuff sand the pre-coated plywood before you prime?
Yeah that's a good idea to scuff sand
Thanks
I like the simplicity of the coat hanger but wondering if you installed a second eye bolt on the rack next to the other, it would prevent the a lot of the twisting while painting.
You can actually tighten the lower nut on the eye bolt to stop it from swivelling. I just failed to do it in the video 😂😂
@@MWAWoodworks I had to look again. Looks to me like it's just the hanger hook swiveling in the eye bolt and the eye bolt is not moving. But you were there and I wasn't. :)
excellent video and thanks for sharing I'm actually thinking of purchasing the graco gxff cordless using ff 210 tip for spraying kitchen cabinets but you believe that hvlp system is better for a finer finish?
In general HVLP is preferred for fine finishing (furniture/cabinets/automobiles) airless sprayers are designed for spraying walls and trim as fast as possible. There's a lot more to it than this very broad brush statement tho 😀
Thanks for the video! Can you tell me the exact color you used for the topcoat? It was emerald, some kind of pretty blue that was darker
Grays Harbor
Hi. I want to ask you what do you use to pull the air out where you have the filters for it is something that I've been trying to figure out but I don't know how but it is you showed me a lot of things I like that video
I use an ambient air cleaner to remove the air and vent it outside
I really like your set up, and I'll have to consider moving away from my horizontal system. What is cleanup after spraying the shellac based primer like? Do you use mineral spirits to clean the spray gun?
I use denatured alcohol. The shellac primer is alcohol based 👍
How do you feel about that Earlex sprayer. I've been wanting to pick up a good HVLP sprayer but keep it cheap as I'm just a part time hobbyist. That sprayer was on my short list. I'd like one sprayer for everything, and if I have to thin down, so be it.
It's a solid sprayer but I've only ever put clear/thin finishes through it knowing its limitations. I don't usually thin out my finishes so I've never put paint through it. I use it mostly to finish smaller projects because it's easier to move around.
court canvas bro iloveit that idea man is fantastico👌
Thanks! 😃
have you ever used the pre catalyzed finishes? great video, by the way!
I tend not to use products that aren't water based due to VOCs. My shop (garage) is not set up for properly handling those fumes. Although technology changes every day so I'm sure there's something out there I could get my hands on that is water based
Do you not sand between each color coat?
remember to use ammonia to clean up the shellac primer vs water
I use alcohol
Awesome video Matt. I have the same sprayer you are using but have had issues with thickness of the paint. I have heard about Kim aqua plus being great because of how thin it is straight out of of the can. Is emerald similar or do you need to thin it?
I have no problem spraying Emerald without thinning it
You mentioned not thinning the Emerald, but what needle set and air/material setting are you using for the Graco to get the smoothest finish?
I use a #3 needle set and set my fluid between 4 and 5 and adjust the air according to what I see
Nice video...
Thanks 👍
Do you use the chem aqua plus for door and window trim etc? I’ve never heard of that one.
I don't do doors or trim. I do cabinetry and furniture. But if it's tough enough for those things I would think you could use it on trim work.
Can ypu go.pver thinning and spray settings?
I don't really thin finishes
Why do you use a shellac primer and not a water based primer? Is it to skip the sanding necessary after applying a water based product? Really enjoy your videos by the way.
Shellac sticks to anything. I often spray over pre-finished plywood which produces a really smooth finish. Shellac also doesn't raise the wood fibers or open up the grain
Have to ever tried getting Kem Aqua tinted to a darker color?
My local store says it can only be whites or pastels.
kem aqua can be used with any sherwin williams color. for the darker colors, they need to use a clear base. But be careful. They will have to add the white to it. For some reason, the computer won't add the white to the clear base. They have to add it manually. Let me know if you have any questions about kem aqua. I've sprayed 350+ kitchens with kem aqua.
Thank you brother I appreciate it. What part of the country are you in?
@@MWAWoodworks I'm in southeast michigan. About 45 minutes north of Detroit
How much did you have to Thin that Emerald urethane to spray it with the HVLP?
No thinning
Great video -- one comment about Kem Aqua Plus: I've been using it for about 6 years and my local supplier can tint it to any SW color, no matter how dark or saturated. This is a huge advantage obviously because the Kem Aqua dries and is ready to sand and re-coat inside 1 hour. Whereas a normal water-based latex or acrylic like SW Emerald or Pro Classic will take realistically 24 hours to fully dry. Have you been told by your SW supplier that they can't tint in darker colors, or is it that you don't think it's as good in darker colors for some reason? Just wanted to clarify, thanks
Ive been told there isn't a tint base that can go deeper than pastel colors
@@MWAWoodworks interesting, and unfortunate. I've definitely had it made in colors like Acorn Black and Peppercorn. A shame your supplier says they can't do it.
M64W523 is the product number. And yes they will not tint it any color but whites or pastels
@@MWAWoodworks I think that product number is the primer, so that may be why they will only do certain tints. In the Kem Aqua line they have primer, color coat, and clear top coat. What I've been doing is using the primer un-tinted, so it just goes on white, 2 coats. Then 2 coats of the color. Clear topcoat is optional. The color coat is where they should be able to do any tint, any SW color. Example: my most recent project used primer (E64 W 520), and color coat in Satin Peppercorn (M64PXA33937-4302). I don't know what all those letters and numbers refer to, i just told them i needed 2 gallons of primer and 2 gallons of satin peppercorn Kem Aqua and they made it for me and the label on the cans was that long sequence of numbers and letters.
What I'm using is definitely a top coat and not primer. I've seen the primer and also a clear coat in addition to the white topcoat. Maybe due to demand it's a product they don't ship into the Nashville area. I will ask the commercial store if they can order kem aqua tint base and see what they say. All the other SW retail stores in my area say no such thing exists here, they just have the white
Kem aqua does carry a deep base since last year. You don't have to go to emerald anymore
I'll ask next time I'm there!
@@MWAWoodworks if they don't have it ask them to bring it in, depending on the employee some are more knowledgeable than others... that aside if you want to try a really amazing finish get your hand on some ilva or milesi... its thicker, flashes over fast and you can add a hardner for an even more velvety finish, especially if you spray vertically
Thanks for the suggestion!
On White cabinets I will only use General Finishes Enduro White Poly water base pro finish once you use it you will never use anything else
Who do you buy it through?
With that grace sprayer are you thinning the finishes at all? What about with the earlx? Maybe a video on thinning finishes?
No I do not think finished through the Graco and I only spray thin clear finishes through the Earlex
you may cut the time in half, buy as goes the time so goes the quality.... always spray flat, your coats will be thicker and "lay" tighter onto the surface....
I haven't seen or noticed any issues with quality 🤷
Love the PacMan!
👏👍💪🔥
👍
I'm here from your last table project where you asked for mercy views of this video because no one was watching it.. I'll even throw in a thumbs up and comment for you! I don't really understand why this is your worst performing video, there's some really good ideas in here.
🤣👍
Sorry you lost me when you drilled holes in your work. But everything else was pretty cool.
I get it. Some people don't like that.
