    When I got my Allegro I avoided the VP but as time’s gone on I now fancy one…. Morris Marina handles? Surely Sir in a VP they’d use the Lotus ones…. 😂

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому

      Sir, the component supplier for said door handles probably didn't care too much which car they went into, just that they got paid... We do like a nice Vanden Plas!

    I had one of these as a daily and sold it just a few months ago and what a great little car it was. Correct / incorrect pronunciation... who cares? Just enjoy what you like and be done with it. No point arguing over such trivial matters. Great video thanks.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому +1

      Oh my goodness me, it's the same thing with the pronunciation of the Ford Ka! As the Ford press office used all three common variants, all are acceptable, and arguments around both how to say Ka or Vanden Plas are therefore ultimately pointless. That sounds like an interesting daily car!

    For years I found the VP 1500 a bit odd looking with that front end, but they’ve have grown on me in recent times.
    The interior is really nice with that posh dashboard and leather seats and C pillar lights.
    I could never tell the difference between the VP1500 series’s they looked all the same to me but you have enlightened me on that.
    £5000 for that example Crikey I remember them being mocked and not able to raise more than £500 for a nice one!
    Good vid as always Joseph, thanks.

      Yes, it was much maligned for many years, and a lot of people still don't like them. However, I really enjoyed this Vanden Plas, especially compared with the Morris Minor Traveller the owner also had. There are some differences between the different Vanden Plas models, but you do have to be quite an expert to know them.

    Mr Lloyd, a most enjoyable review, indeed. I offen wondered what the 1500 Vanden Plas would have looked with a 3 box saloon style rear end. I love the front, especially the grill and, of course, the interior, which just needs a few little extra for it to be perfect.

    • @nygelmiller5293

      To paulie Gualtieri. A very inventive reaction, to wonder what it would look with a "saloon" style rear end!

      I don't believe so, it's sort of a uniquely British idea in some ways, aimed at people who used to own Daimlers, etc, but did not need such a big car any more.

    There were a handful of Vanden Plas prototypes of other BL cars that would have been interesting, 1800, Marina, Maxi and Princess, even one based on the Mini more upmarket than the Wolseley Hornet and Riley Elf.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому

    Sorry you didn't get to drive my VDP, just couldn't live with the auto box. The car otherwise drove lovely without a single rattle and it way surpassed my expectations. Another good video, see you on my travels one day in my TF.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому +1

      Don't worry about, it, sir! I have driven other automatic cars before which were ruined by a dreadful gearbox (I could name at least four or five), so I understand why you needed to move it. Thanks again for watching, and see you soon!

  • @nygelmiller5293
    @nygelmiller5293 5 місяців тому +1

    Personally I prefer the headlining on the AUSTIN version. That's because the VP has a roll of fabric across the roof, over rear passengers' heads - reducing rear passengers' headroom! And an unforgiveable error in the ( otherwise beautifully upholstered) boot - is seeing the SILVER petrol tank pipe, which needs to be matched in with black paint.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому

      Never mind, sir, if you don't use the boot, the problem goes away... The interior of one of these is really rather nice, even if there is less headroom.

    I remember an August 1989 Car magazine giant test between a Van den Plas , top spec Orion and Belmont , the Van den Plas came an honourable second behind the Belmont as I recall.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Sir, we do like a Rover 216 Vanden Plas very much! Sadly, all those seem to have disappeared due to chronic rust (much like Orions and Belmonts)...

  • @alaricbragg7843

    Thank you for this video! Looks very nice inside, if a bit 1970s - but that makes it classic! This may be the Mandela effect talking, but did some of these come with drink cabinets like their Daimler Double-Six big brothers? Certainly some features such as those little desks in the back of the seats would not be out of place in modern vehicles. The shape is actually very nice too, even if the car was originally meant to be a hatch, and the truncated boot is dismissed by cynics as an exercise in cost cutting. Other, more highly regarded - but more problematic - cars from the same time by Lancia and Alfa Romeo had similar back ends too!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому +1

      I don't think the drinks cabinet was something that was available in the 1500, but the Daimler Double Six would have certainly come with one of those as an option. The picnic tables are wonderful, I think the earlier Vanden Plas 1300 had those too. It was supposed to be a bit like an Alfasud, but clearly they didn't quite end up being quite as revered. They were better rust protected than the Alfasuds, though...

    • @RobertSmith-jl4yw
      @RobertSmith-jl4yw Місяць тому

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Me neither. I don't see why the styling offends, even though the ADO16s were undeniably sharp and pretty. The Allegro/VDP driving position, ie. pedal and steering wheel positions and angles are definately better. I had an S3 Allegro 1.3HL when new (through my father's position at Jaguar Rover Triumph at the time), and didn't like the removal of all the S2's delicate bright trim and hub caps. Also it was brown. However, I see them now and would have one again (but put the chrome hubcaps on it. I think on ADO67s the VDP grille works very well - the shape mirrors the car's profile somewhat. That's my two-penn'orth.

  • @frazzleface753
    @frazzleface753 5 місяців тому +2

    It's pronounced Van den Pl.....oh sorry, sir - that was close! This car is such an oddity. A beige leather interior with wood, a nice big shiny grille, deep pile carpets and various other luxury appointments in a car that, well, is bottom of the pile in terms of what one thinks of when they're asked to name a prestigious car. How does one successfully deal with this dichotomous nature? This car probably would have appealed to me if I was 60 in 1976 - a touch of luxury and comfort that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому +3

      Sir, we enjoyed ourselves very much with this one. It may be based on an Allegro, but having driven two of those, this one does feel significantly different. It is definitely my kind of car, although I think that the Montego Vanden Plas would be even better (if you could actually find one)...

      Yes, it will be a Mark III 1979-80 Vanden Plas 1.7 Automatic if it had the 1750 engine, although those only had a single carburettor. The Mark III Vanden Plas 1.5 had a manual gearbox and twin caburettors.

  • @MGBetts1
    @MGBetts1 5 місяців тому

    I would actually say it IS an Allegra - as in a member of the Allegro "family." In the same way, I'd say the Singer Chamois and Sunbeam Stiletto are Imps! To be precise, I'd say the Vanden Plas 1500 is a posh Allegro.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 місяців тому +1

      I don't ever call the Chamois or Stiletto an Imp if I can avoid even if I (and everyone else) know that they are based on Imps, as they were not badged or marketed as such. Same with the Vanden Plas 1500, it's clear to everyone what it is based on, but they never marketed it as one.
