I've been playing a 430 SLDR for years. When I first got it I was able to hit it 280 & roll out to 300 here and there. Its still a pretty consistent driver for me (9-ish HDCP). No point in me buying an M5
I just bought an SLDR 430 at TeeTime in NC yesterday. Big bux for it. $60. I just took it outside and hit it. I love it. M2 no longer in my bag. Was replaced with a Cobra that was replace with an old Cleveland x2... I keep switching clubs looking for the one that completes my golf puzzle. Yeah, Im a cheapSk8... proud of it
Some excellent striking there Simon.....Great to see Old Vs New....A comparison that I would love to see would be a 2012 Cleveland Classic Driver (the one that had persimmon colours) 310 head with a Miyazaki Kusala 61S Black shaft Versus Cleveland LAUNCHER HB Driver with similar shaft.....That 'Classic' driver was used by Graham MacDowell, and until recently Smilie Kaufman. I still have one, but it's been superseded by a Rogue Sub Zero (last year)
Love it again. Brutally honest. About the forgiveness, bias, sound etc etc. Knowing that, you hear what you are looking for. As I said, I love this. Best driver I ever bought was second hand.
Loved the quip about the difference in price , brilliant comparison and it just goes to prove that it's the swing that matters not speed foam or tublators or what ever other pish manufacturers put in their clubs ,but saying that just watched you hitting the the bang storm and I want one 😀. Keep it up Simon luvin your stuff
David Mulholland so a 1984 driver with a steel shaft will perform the same as a 2017 model with a graphite shaft, titanium face, and carbon fiber crown ? I get what your saying, but tech does make a difference.
Great vid. Thanks for posting. Always good to compare older vs newer. I have an sldr...bought it new when it was all the rage. I did pick up some distance and it's somewhat forgiving as long as I don't overswing. At some point, I'll be in the market for a newer driver, but I think I'll stick with the sldr for another year. I feel the saying "it's the wizard ,....not the wand" fits my game. I feel my bad play is seldom the equipment's fault.
very nice to see a review from a fast swinging amature golfer that doesn't have perfect form and consistency. I think that matches up with most young weekend warriors like myself, so this review was much more helpful than the rick shiels and mark crossfield type of reviewers. I'll keep my SLDR and buy some more rounds of golf and driving range instead.
Dude, I've picked up two of these rocket launchers, a Titleist 975D 9* - X-Stiff, over the past 10-days because of how you taught me. I'm giving lesson on their front lawn, basic shittie, grip ball position. Too funny. I can't even swing a putter yet but... swing goal date: 4.15.2023 annual church tournament: 4.30.2023 You da bomb...Si
I had the SLDR driver, and the irons.. irons lasted 4 years before changing to the p790s.. The driver lasted about 3 months, as you mentioned not the most forgiving... even playing with the weights I was overly drawing/hooking it no matter what I did on off shorts, but did go a long way!!... went back to the R11, now settled on the M2... 11 handicapper at the time... defo a better player club. Nice Video as always and your thoughts on this.
Had my SLDR fitted with a longer 47” graphite shaft (Fujiyama) as I’m a taller guy at 6’4” and I set the weight at a slight draw. I’ve never striped them ball better! (280-290) Even my less than perfect shots, especially ones off the toe, still seem to stay in play and go around 230-240 yds
Great video and great result for the under-dog. Would be good to see the SLDR 3 wood v's the latest TM M fairway. Fairway woods always seem to get forgotten on these sort of tests; Stenson leading the way with oldest fairway...
I quit playing for almost 20 years and picked the game back up three years ago. I didn't get new clubs for a bit until I had a swing that would merit a proper fitting. As such, until I bought my SM6 wedges, I was playing my Ping Eye 2 square groove sand and lob wedges I bought in the late 80s!! May be tough to find, but would love to see some tests both on the course and with launch monitor data to see what those square grooves do in a player's hands! Cheers and keep up the great work.
Sounds familiar. I am getting back to golf after 20 years(health/arthritis) and playing with my old forged irons. Hit them great(8 hcap). I went for a fitting and didn't realize how big the difference is.......a 25 yard gain with Mizuno hot metal irons.....and that's only hitting about 30 balls so should get more, hope to get within 1 club of the old game. The new club is much lighter and easier on the wrists, very comfortable to hit - makes the old clubs feel like work. Woods next but still trying to get the wood swing back......limited leg drive due to arthritis.
Just bought the SLDR S set of driver (12°), 3 wood (15°) and 3 hybrid (19°) for my son for AU$160 (£85). At the moment he's half way across Australia in Broken Hill with a broken alternator but should be home tomorrow night. He's a fairly new player as I bought him a set from cash converters for his birthday in May, but didn't have much in the 'wood' department, so these will really help his game (with any luck). Really enjoy your content and respect your feelings with using secondhand gear. Cheers and happy New Year, from Paul in Adelaide, South Australia.
It does show the sldr to be more unforgiving. I purchased thesldr driver and sldr s 3 wood last year, I can’t hit the driver at all, but I love the 3w. The drivers sliding weight seems to make a difference in distance and how hitting the ball feels, but it doesn’t impact the towering ball boomerang slice I get with it.
I had a SLDR first driver that I hit a couple over 300 yards at the fitting. I liked the deep face and gray finish but did not like the mis hits now I have the G 400 Max and never hit a driver so good. After a while your swing gets better, not really but you get more confidence so you swing so much more freely.
Good comparison! It exemplified the issue I had with the SLDR, I could hit some real bombs with it, but also drop some real turds at times. I liked the loft up campaign, and I never heard why they dropped it with the R15.
I have a sldr 460 12deg and a Japan only sldr 430 tour 10 deg ,around $50 & $60 U.S., respectively I believe, the 460 has a bigger sweet spot but flies a bit high for me , the 430 is more workable left to right or right to left, they both have 65g r flex high flight shafts, with what seem to be mid kick point, I tee them high and let them fly, I'm happy with them both, that being said I bought a 2002 Ram 420 cc 12 deg, with deep face for $2.24 + sales tax at the Salvation Army, put a new Taki- Mac tour wrap grip with four layers of tape under the grip on it and gave it to a friend, he loves it, Nice Driver for a $5 investment , you can't buy a good shot with anything but practice
Really enjoyed this style of video. Also good to hear why I’ve always struggled with my R15 which I think is similar to the SLDR, great when you connect but next to no forgiveness so I now think it’s time for me to switch
Simon, you could hit a toothpick close to 300 yards. You always crush it. I just changed my SLDR 6 months ago to Cobra F8. I loved the SLDR and hit it decent but I never liked the feel and the hollow sound when you hit it. I always buy a new driver every 3 - 4 years at the end of the season to save money. The SLDR was a good driver. for sure. I would recommend it for people who want a good driver at a cheap price. I played around with weights in the beginning but just set it on neutral and left it there. I would hit a nice 5 yard draw but very little roll because of the height the SLDR would hit the ball.
Loving your testing. I have always looked to buy secondhand. Ultimately as you said it doesn’t matter what’s in your hands if you don’t hit the middle you will get punished. I think Srixon clubs have managed to sneak under the radar, they don’t seem to buy into all the heavy marketing and hype that is around at the moment. I play the the 545s and love them. Subscribed.
when i went and did my fitting for the m5, moving the weights around made a large difference for me regarding trajectory and spin etc. i gained almost 25 more yards with the m5 over my 2017 m1 but the proper fitting shaft also played a large role in that of course.
Yeah shafts for me do make a huge difference in spin and launch. Interesting you found such a difference with the weights being moved on you ball flights. all test that i have done myself have tended to come out miscellanous. but if it works mate!
Possibly the M1 was a misfit club and had nothing to do with fitting or weights. In other words, off the shelf M5 would likely be 25 yards longer as well. I’m not buying all the fitting/adjustability stuff being pushed.
£99 night out with her indoors? mcds costs about £14 for 2 :) love seeing how similar these are in honest hands. I saw second hand epic drivers in OGC for £199, compare that to flash and rogue? how far can a club come in 18 months?
I still game the SLDR to this day! How do you feel about the weight on the SLDR? Opposite of where you strike on the face? or place the weight under where you strike it on the face?
I had bought an SLDR to replace an R1. But found the R1 to be longer and straighter with better feel and sound. I liked it, but hated the useless compass-like dial on the bottom. Any thoughts on the R1?
The sldr original design was massively improved by a later model change with the *C* model. 460 SLDR Cis very rare but IF you can source one it's pure gold! The C is very very forgiving, doesn't need to loft up and will perform with the very best. On eBay I've seen a few in Europe and Australia but wasn't released here in the UK.
Who is this? Bobcat? You can get the SLDR-C for less than $100 new here in the States. For the price, it may be the best driver you can get right now--and you don't need to loft up with it.
Had the Sldr and it was a great driver but had it's flaws. Is M5 worth an extra 350? In my opinion definitely NO but people will carry on spending money thinking that it will save them x amount of shots etc. Amateurs should really go and get a proper putter fitting and spend 200 or less on something that will really make a difference to their scores as it was a huge eye opener for me when I done it a few weeks ago
Any driver from the last five years would work fine for average golfer. Today went to the sim my i25 against the new ping driver no difference save your money for lessons and short game practice.

I've never hit twist face but what I can say is from my m2 2017 a high toe is the killer shot really worst shot I can hit with it anything counteracting that has to be a good thing
Did you say you lofted the sldr down to the same as the m5? Isn't that going against the idea of the sldr? I get that you're trying to make it a fair comparison but surely both clubs should be optimised to get the fairest test?
Now I've watched through to the end, I can't imagine why you'd spend the extra 350! All that new technology has done is changed the bad one from a slice to a hook. Lol
Wow, you got the SLDR cheap, "a night out with the missus" usually costs me about £30, which equals 2 Rounds down the pub and a Bag of chips on the way home!
How did you get the SLDR to slice? It's famous for taking the right side of the fairway out of the equation (but it was easy to lose low and left). Despite its Internet reputation, I never found the SLDR that unforgiving. Will you lose yards hitting it off-center? Yes, but that's true with most drivers, especially if they're loft-challenged like the SLDR. The SLDR's biggest problem was TaylorMade's marketing it to the masses. That said, I'm a 15 hdcp and I still game a 12* (1*+, bottom weight 2 clicks to the heel). Even with all that loft (13*), it doesn't 'balloon' on me and is very accurate.
I ALWAYS buy older versions! So hard to justify $500+. I just retired my Callaway 2009 (I think) FtiZ in 13°. It was new but 2 yr old model. It is a VERY forgiving driver and fairly long. I just picked up a Cobra F6, again new but a 2-3 yr old tech. Adjusted it 12.5° and bombing (for me at 68 yrs old) 240-250 yds on clean strikes. Very forgiving, low launching for 12.5° and really rolls out. I hit a low ball. Compared to the FtiZ it's much lighter so I think I can swing it faster. I'd encourage the more "mature" golfer to go lightweight.
Why would you compare these two drivers? The SLDR is by far the worst driver Taylormade ever came out with. You would have to pay me to own one and I still wouldn’t have it in my bag...🤷🏼♂️
I had one and loved it. Absolutely crushed the ball with it. If it wasnt stolen, I'd still be using it. I am actually trying to find one in "new" condition somewhere if that's possible.
I love my SLDR. I know I'm outdated but it does the job
I've been playing a 430 SLDR for years. When I first got it I was able to hit it 280 & roll out to 300 here and there. Its still a pretty consistent driver for me (9-ish HDCP). No point in me buying an M5

SLDR S would be a better test, sounds better also, Great club
I gave my dad a 12.5 degree S and he loves it. Hits it so straight compared to any driver Ive witnessed him using.
he seems very knowledgeable, but what language is he speaking?
i am going to sat tee hee 10 years driver .,...... love vid
blair simpson thanks mate!
So...nobody gonna discuss about that flick of fire in 6.33...
M1 2017 vs M5 2019 :D
i got a 75 gram shaft in my f9 cant lift the club and was fitted for me by gloucester golf centre useless golf fitters
question for you as I was most likely heading there for a fitting myself in the coming months. surely you could hit it in the shop?
@@Matt-qo8ct hi when i was in the shop i think i hit a 60 gram shaft i hit it ok trust me avold that place
I still have SLDR nightmares. Most unforgiving driver ever.
Why would you compare these two drivers? The SLDR is by far the worst driver Taylormade ever came out with. You would have to pay me to own one and I still wouldn’t have it in my bag...🤷🏼♂️
Well if it was the worse driver and still competes with their brand new one i guess that says something.
It doesn’t compete with the new drivers. Especially on off center hits! Pay attention brah...🤦🏼♂️
Darin Iverson but that’s what I said in the review mate same ball speed, less forgiving, £300 cheaper.... not sure what iv missed.
I had one and loved it. Absolutely crushed the ball with it. If it wasnt stolen, I'd still be using it. I am actually trying to find one in "new" condition somewhere if that's possible.
B C keep an eye on 3balls.com I bought one on there in close to perfect condition
