Devin's scream has more musicality than the vast majority of singers on the radio today.
If you've got half an hour to fill one evening, treat yourself to the trio of Funeral - Bastard - Death of Music, live at the Royal Albert Hall. Three of my favourite songs of his. DoM especially is very emotional and he just sings, no guitar for Devy on that song.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG YES YES YES PLEASE! This combo is BY FAR one of Devin's most powerful, emotional, amazing feats of singing you'll ever hear. Ocean Machine (the album these songs are from) was a very deep album for Devy, and should be considered one of his best ever.

You should definitely check out Devin Townsend - The Death Of Music (Live in plovdiv) It's an incredible song and and absolutely astounding performance. The emotion he puts into it and the way he slowly builds up the song to it's epic and the conclusion is breathtaking.
If you want to hear him without too much fry doing a musical- type song, have a look at Why? which he did live at home during quarantine. It will give you a good insight into his voice

If you would like to hear him with clean vocals only, I would suggest ih-ah, with Anneke van Giersbergen. It's a completely different style with beautiful harmonies.

He showed what he can do without screaming in the song “Kingdom” as well as the song “why?”. I don’t think he screams that much. In the latter song, there’s only one screen and it’s mostly operatic belting. And then his other songs is usually a good mixture of clean and distorted/scream vocals. You always get a good taste of his regular clean vocals which are very powerful and have a great range.
OK, I just finished watching this reaction video. You definitely need to watch “why?”. He does a lot of belting in his clean voice there. It’s my favorite performance of his because of that.
He almost certainly has pitched screams. That makes him IMHO something different than the random metal guys. You can really hear it in the Plovdiv version of this song. Look for his cover of bring him home from Les Mis.

As for Devin songs with less screams, for anyone interested I made a playlist called Devin Townsend Minimum Screams. It's a mix of different genres he covers.
As for Sam, try...
* Why? Quarantine concert - he is his goofy self there, and I know you like that. Order of Magnitude version might also be great, but since it hasn't been released that long ago, might get blocked
* Casualties of Cool - Mountain Top. You'll get to meet Che, a female singer he likes to collab with.
* Bring him home (cover) - my favorite version is the one in Eindhoven. Acoustic, so you can really focus on the singing
* Funeral acoustic version - CBC version, and then check the original version at RAH for comparison.

Listen to his album Empath where he shows that he has a beautiful singing voice.
For (mostly) clean vocals, I would suggest Supercrush, Spirits Will Collide, or Why. Supercrush was originally one of many duets with Anneke van Giesrbergen, so glorious to begin with, but there are live versions where he goes solo, like @Tuska in 2010 or the online concert he did a few months back for Empath vol 2. Spirits Will Collide is as anthemic as they come and the version he did for his first quarantine show this year is the best showcase, as he sings parts that were choral in the original. Why? is a Disney movie-like number, all clean and operatic - you can either go with the quarantine show or the live video from his most recent tour, where you also get a hilarious audience participation bit...Enjoy....
Stop it with the lesser version of WHY! . For once recommend the studio version. Which holds the essence and perfection of the performance and arrangement.
The music video and Order of Magnitude versions often get blocked. The Quarantine version is perfect to still get a reaction out, also... Sam liked his humor so that's an added bonus. ;)

Everyone is suggesting more Devin that is similar to this song, in style. I would suggest another, very different, style. > Mountaintop < It is a duet he wrote with him singing accompaniment, not lead. It is glorious.

Really glad you enjoyed the ride! I believe Devin was a little under the weather for this show, so it's interesting to see him kind of adjust his approach as he goes. I've seen Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge do the same thing. That has to be really hard for a singer, but I guess working around obstacles is part of being a professional.
If you want to hear a Devin song with no screams at all, I'd recommend his song "Kawaii." Short and sweet with stripped back instrumentation. Been a favorite of mine for a long time.
Devin is one of the BEST transmisors if feelings live. Saw him a couple of times in 20 years and will never has enought!
I believe Devin has some kind of syndrome where he sees music and notes as colours and shapes. It's one of the reasons he is so unique.

If you are interested in his cleaner outputs, i highly recommend his 'casualties of cool' side project. It's a sort of Country/Americana with mostly clean singing. Try the live version from the Dunlop sessions. Good reaction btw 👍🏽
I feel the need to always say this, he actually was suffering from a cold during this...you can hear it a couple times.

Please, please, please do his song "The Death of Music" from the same show this song was at. It isn't as insane vocally as, say, Kingdom, but it's a 10+ minute long slow burn that builds for the entire length of the song. Might just be me, but that one *really* hits me in the feels on a really personal level. Just amazing and incredibly moving.
That ia on fact the most beautiful emotional scream out there.
Couple things
1. Dev has covered Bring Him Home from Les Mis. Highly suggest finding it. It's so good.
2. Dev was sick before this show. I believe he had laryngitis (I very well could be wrong with what he had). Also, this was his SECOND show of the night. He did a full set before any of this. Took a 25-30min break and then jumped right back into another set.
Death of music @ Royal Albert hall, has to be his next song you react to !! Pure vocal performance after 2h1/2 of concert

Like many suggested Why? Is a good song with almoust no scream, Ih Ah is more his "normal" voice.
Devin is perfection. Check out Funeral, Bastard, and The Death of Music at the RAH, same concert. This was an almost 3 hour set with him having a cold 🔥🤘💯
Not a lot of people are seeing this song but Devin covering Bring Him Home from Les Miserables is definitely worth your time
Deadhead is amazing, but is far from my favourite for what he has made. Even Kingdom, though it's a fun song, is super pulled back and relatively simple compared to his other works.
Of his more dynamic music, Higher is among m favourites. The performance in Plovdiv in particular.
you should try and get in contact with him to do an interview i bet he would be down for it.

Nobody suggests this one but give it a try at "in my dreams with you" he sang that for Steve Vai's band. An amazing tune and it's more of a rock-pop song
I honestly think he pitches those screams and those high notes are in his natural mixed voice.i think near the end of the song Devin hits a clear f5. At least that's what I heard. Can someone explain to me how "Vocal coaches" all over UA-cam haven't heard the most iconic voices of recent generations?
Isn't it their job to know these things so they can teach it to people who want to sound a certain way?

So, to try and answer your question in as few words as possible: no not really.
I can’t speak for other “vocal coaches” all over UA-cam as you put it, but my job isn’t to make anyone sound like someone else, it’s to nurture and cultivate the individuals voice so they are the best version of themselves. There are so many different angles to approach (anatomy, vowel modification, onset’s, body cover, breathing, and on and on an on) that I would cover weeeell before a particular style. That being said, if someone came to me and said “I want to emulate X,Y or Z, I’d take a listen to them as I teach. I don’t have a database of every singer from every genre logged in my head, I’m on a constant musical journey just like everyone else. If we take Devin Townsend for example, every year he’ll be heard by lots of new people. Some will be just getting into rock music, some will listen on recommendation, some will be asked to listen to him to describe his voice on UA-cam... and most of the time, people being introduced to a new voice and style of music they like is a very welcoming experience, although you do get the odd snob who scolds you for not discovering them fast enough.
As for the most iconic voices of the generations, that’s a subjective concept. There are likely incredible Musical Theatre vocal coaches who have never heard great rock singers. Does that impede their ability to teach? I’d argue that it doesn’t. Likewise, a great rock vocal coach may never have heard some of the jazz greats, doesn’t mean they can’t teach effectively.
I focus on what’s happening anatomically while singing, so I have a keen interest in hearing a myriad of voices that covers many genres, but I listen to a lot of Neo Soul and Jazz in my spare time, so I just don’t run into many of these folk outside of UA-cam.
Not sure if that answers your question (or if it even was a question you were actually wanting answered), but that’s my 2 cents ✌️

My understanding is that vocal fry can be pitched, and that Devin’s screaming usually is like this. Also, I’m no expert, but when I hear him scream it feels like he’s working with overtones like harmonics on a guitar. It seems like he’s manipulating the shape of his facial cavities and that glottal closure or whatever to create these resonant multiples of his pitch, which lets him produce those extremely high, jet-engine, visceral sounds.

Going to go with what a lot of people are saying and push for a reaction to "Why?" from Devin's Quarantine Show if you want to hear clean vocal Devin. I'd ALSO suggest checking out another duo project that he's one half of, Casualties of Cool. He isn't the primary vocalist there, but it certainly shows his versatility, as it's a kind of Devin take on the country genre. I'd recommend "Forgive Me" from the Dunlop Sessions recording. There's no separate video for just that song that I'm aware of, but the Dunlop Sessions has links to the timestamp for each song in the comments.
What youre describing at 9:13 is what Devin calls a "Wall of sound" and that is a PERFECT example

You might want to change your opinion that fry screams have no tone behind them. Dev will fry scream any note you throw his way. He even has a massive pitch shift to his final scream.

actually Devon's screams do have tone. Its a different technique from the typical pure fry scream. There are a few bands who use this kind of screaming, but it isnt the most common because it is dangerous if done incorrectly.
I'm confused, my understanding of "metal" screaming is that false cord was the one that has no real tonality to it but fry was just adding distortion to your regular singing? Not a musician or singer so describing my point is a little hard, hope that came across somewhat.
Devin creates his fry in his sinuses, not his throat. Thats how he can fry in proper pitch.

Look up Ziltoid on UA-cam, e.g. ZTO and you'll know what it's about. It's kind of an alter ego for Devin, where he plays an alien looking for the ultimate cup of coffee. He made a concept album after getting his kid, played all the instruments and mixed it himself. It's basically a puppet show, inspired by The Dark Crystal. He even kept his cut off dreads from when he was younger and stuck it on the puppet.
