This video has changed my relationship with my hair. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've tried to explain vintage haircuts to contemporary hairdressers (who kept giving me a severe, square bob) but you nailed it. I'm lucky in that I have naturally curly hair that doesn't need setting, unless I want defined curls - if it's cut right, in a vintage style (that you describe perfectly) then it just falls into the style. It doesn't need rollers, or even pomade, it just does it - maybe a few bobby pins at the front for security, but it's five minutes maximum. I moved hairdressers and went in cold to an old fashioned salon that specialises in granny wet sets, with bonnets and perming lotion. My stylist gave me the same cut she gives Doris, who's 94. The stylist just GOT ME, and understood my hair type, No fighting my hair anymore. I showed her your video and some of the comments about the technicals aspects of it, and I literally have the best cut of my life. Thank you so much!
Grateful to have stumbled upon this older video of yours. Y'know, I'm startled and in dismay over just how ignorant so many working young hairdressers today are. They have no clue about history, niche subcultural references and about vintage styling in general. When you find a great hairdresser who speaks your language and has the skills and work ethic, hang onto 'em and pay 'em every penny they want as they're precious and rare.
Legit beauty school flashbacks watching this rollerset. So nice to see how a woman would actually roll her own hair - hairstylists don't often get to see that. End result is gorgeous - a modern-day Marilyn Monroe! (though you look like a spitting image for Wynona Ryder!) This video is my drag inspiration for a Halloween Marilyn costume.
I think your hair is absolutely adorable! I wish more women would go short, it really accentuates the best features on their faces and it gives them so much youthful energy!❤
well you absolutely bloody nailed that. I've been cutting my own hair since i was 10 and people look at me in absolute horror when i tell them that - it's REALLY not that hard to do just needs 2 mirrors, a good pair of scissors and some patience. I might give your way a go next time i get bored and reach for the scissors - my general technique is grab 2 mirrors and chop off everything that doesn't look like the picture LOL (seriously. that's my technique. it's worked fine for me so far though) I've never tried measuring anything before so that'll be a new experience
I think if you’ve got pretty “normal” hair, and go slow with it, it’s hard to mess up a home cut! The key is going slow! 😂 I do love getting my hair professionally cut but in 2020 that has not been an option for me personally. I think I will go to a professional to get a little bit of shaping done during my grow-out process. I don’t particularly WANT to grow it out but I’d like to be able to make some more hair content and I need a bit more length to work with! I think I’ll be chopping it again next summer 😁 thanks for your kind comment! ❤️
Omg where were you my whole life 😢 that's such a good tutorial I dyed my hair blonde but never had the courage to cut it because I didn't know how it would turn out- but now I know and I'm sooo thankful to you. 😘😘❤❤❤
You have Marilyn's shape face. You look amazing in this video and the hair look beautiful on you. It's like you stepped back in time. You do have a shape face that looks good with this cut and style.
Your hair turned out beautifully! You look like Marilyn! I found this tutorial because I didn't have anyone you come cut my 98 year old Grandma's hair, and I wondered if I could do it. Thanks to you, I did it!! I wish I could show you a picture! Thank you so much!! 💕
Aww thank you so much for sharing that with me! It makes me so happy to know that I helped you and you were able to care for your grandma 😊 I hope she was happy with her haircut! 💗
Thanks so much for this! I am doing an "Italian Cut" style allover curls for my Oct 22 wedding. My hair is normally a short bob/pixie, and I couldn't figure out how long I needed to grow it to get that Marilyn/Ava Gardner look :) this is just what I need!
Thank you for the tutorial! It gave me the inspiration I needed and the name (The Italian Cut) I was looking for! I actually went to my barber/stylist and she did it for me. I'm one of the naturally curly girls who doesn't need to set it. I'm basically experimenting with how to comb it before it dries after a shower to get different looks and I'm obsessed! Can't believe I didn't do this years ago.

just did this, out of desperation. The weight of my hair was adding to my migraines. It’s not perfect, but I went longer everywhere, except the neckline. 6 on top and 5 on the rest. Thank you!
Beautiful and authentic end result. I am just wondering ... if you put your hair in a sort of sleeping net, might the style last more than a day? Asking because I feel like I remember that women went to have their hair set like ... once a week back in the 50s? Answered my own question: Setting lotion! Lotta Body - that helps the set last. Thanks for showing that in one of your tutorials. My son and I managed to do the haircut, then I set it, and I am truly happy with the result. My hair is naturally poodle curl x frizzy, and this cut/set gives it the professional, predictable look I have been looking for ... well, for a really long time. I have received many compliments on it. Thank you.

And even cooler is that you take the time to reply to our comments. I've always loved retro everything, but this is my first time chasing retro hair. As shocking as this is to me, I am now a "senior," and I fear that even if I capture the look, it will just make me look like more of an old lady.😂 But I bought my rollers today and am about to undergo my first attempt. After watching your vid another time or 7 that is. LOL. Thanks again.
Well done darling! You're lovely and you make it look so easy! I've been fooling around with this hairstyle and this "bit of gentle guidance" goes a long way! Cheers!
I did it!! Thank you SO much for this, I followed the tutorial tonight and it was so good, I absolutely love it. Marilyn is such an icon for me, and I especially love her 'undone' looks, and my hair is naturally wavy so it's quite easy to achieve with this haircut. I love this so much!!! Absolutely timelessly beautiful! I we can manage to revert back to vintage ways; a sense of community, clothing, hair, family dynamics- all of it is so beautiful, put together and honestly necessary. We’ve lost much of it and it seems the world is a big mess now.
Thanks for diagram and telling me to use a ruler and exact measurements. I have been cutting my own hair for 30 and never used a ruler! Next time i will try a ruler!
subscribed. after the capsule video. this was amazing. I have short hair now (quarantine haircute, if ya know what I mean) and I almost regretted it. watching this video gave me hope. purchased the rollers for 8 bucks on amazon... we'll see how this turns out!! THANK YOU
Don’t give up hope! You may want to try a few different rolling patterns if this one isn’t the best, but I really do think this haircut and style would be flattering on most people! Thanks for your support! 🥰❤️
This is a fantastic tutorial. I'm trying a few ways and this is clear, gives tips & hints, and covers all the steps. Well done. If you're taking requests, do you have a variety of clip and scarf do's that can be done alternative to a full set like this? For "next days" when you have some curls and want something cute?
I'm so happy you made this video! I've been wanting to get a cut like that for a long time and never had the courage to try and do it myself. I followed your example and I'm in love with the cut, specially having curly hair I didn't even have to pincurl it to get a super cute set 😍😍😍😍
Fabulous. What I'd like to add if I may? Is that if you have some natural curl in your hair or if you have a soft perm? The roller setting will far easier, as the tresses of hair will want to naturally curl around the roller. Also the plastic rollers with the little teeth on them will be easier to roll, but an hairdryer will be required as sleeping in them will be a little uncomfortable. Looking forward to seeing some more tutorials. Ps: a little bit more light may be advised! 😉
Yes, I’ve been thinking about looking for a professional around me that might give me a perm, that would be so helpful! And yeah, unfortunately it was a bit dark. Definitely will make sure to have more light in future tutorials! Thanks for watching 💕
Sally Beauty Supply has Conair Self Grip rollers that are awesome. I will definitely be trying this haircut out on myself when my hair grows out and will dig out my Conair rollers. My hair is a wavy mess. Thank you for this video.
I’m a year late but I finally did the chop and cut my hair in a pixie. Now I’ve been looking into ways to style it with my naturally wavy hair. I like how it looks longer so I wanted to try the vintage style. I just need to grow out the back of my hair more, but I’m willing to practice on the top and sides of my hair. Thanks for this tutorial.
Your face.... and even your mimic... Wowwwww it's so similar to hers!!! The hair you did very beautiful, when she wouldn't have turned into blond, she would have looked as you do! Love, Sabine
So l had hair down to my lower back, recently cut it to my shoulders, still not in love, l think l will do this, thank you for helping me find what l really wanted! You rock!
That's beautiful. My mother wore the Sugar Bowl and pinned it with bobby pins almost every night. I now have to cut my own hair and will use some of your techniques. I am not professional, but after watching so many hairdressers cut hair, I have learned to cut above my fingers after angling the hair in the direction I want to layer. However, your method gives the modern choppy cut. Bobby pin setting is where you take a tiny section of hair, coil it around your finger, press it downward to the head and use two pins, criss-crossed to secure it. Mom started the set a little below the crown after combing downward and starting the first roll below the straight hair, working around the head to create the beautiful halo effect. I was attempting to grow out an extremely bad cut, [literally, a chop], into similar to what you have done. I was about to trim off that bottom layer. Now I am going to save it to see how it blends in to the upper layers. The Italian cut is flattering too. Mom used to set my hair with sponge rollers. She taught me how, so this will be easy and give me at least two choices for styles. I have wavy hair and really want it to look wash and go, most of the time. I guess I have the Bixie cut, but need to allow more layers on top to grow out.
Bless you for making this 😂 I have actually tried to get this cut from a couple hair stylists and they are just not getting it unfortunately. Now I'm in desperate need of a cut and am so I found this!! ❤
I used to cut my hair myself a lot. People were shocked when I told them. Eventually I’d go back to a professional and they would ask who the last person was that cut my hair, I’d tell them, they would roll their eyes. But sometimes late at night I just got mad at my hair and needed to change it immediately. Besides, it’s hair, it will grow out.
Omg my hair is already short like Marilyn’s and people have literally told me I look like her so many times I’m so excited to do this thank u so much 💜
Wow that looks great, I was always a fan of when Marilyn had her shorter cuts. Her hair in "Clash By Night" from 1952 springs to mind. Seems that hair styles in the 50s were shorter than many people tend to realize.
I freaking love your honesty & humor. By the way you killed this look. So good!!! I’m tempted to get this cut but I know in the mornings I will feel like a 80s skate boarder 🤣 as you said.
Yeah my style has definitely evolved since I started my channel! And I'm happy to say I'm very pleased with my look currently, (and also just being way more comfortable on camera helps! lol) thank you so much! ❤️
I finally did it! I've been wanting to cut my hair like this but I was hesitating... and yesterday I followed your tutorial. My hair is very big, curly, floofy. Hard to manage. But I brushed and styled it ONCE this morning and it's been hours, but it still looks the same! Thank you so much for this!!!
I have a pixie cut and its like buzzed on the sides and I am growing it out to Marilyn Monroe hair! You really have inspired me my hair grows really fast and being me I want it to grow faster. But you made me so dang excited 😊 about growing my hair out! Anyway thank you so much for the video!!!

you look and sound so similar to winona ryder 😍 also thank you for the tutorial, im growing my hair out atm so once it gets a bit longer im 100% gonna try this out!
I have a regular layered bob, but I will definitely be rolling my hair tonight using your tips! 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I’ve done it before but I’m gonna EXTRA hard this time to do it right lol
@@LizVonVillas I’ve realized that rolling on wet hair for me just never works, no matter what I do. The inside is never dry🥲 SO I did it on air dried hair and just spritzed each piece slightly and it came out nice!! The only thing is, I can’t do a true brush out because of how a brush affects my hair texture; so I kinda just combed the curls, shaped them, and it was pretty good👍🏼👍🏼
I’m going to be getting this done next week!! I’ve always loved vintage hair but Marilyn’s hairstyles have a special place in my heart. I’m so excited! Thank you for this video! Edit: it’s been about a year since i cut my hair and tbh the hairstylist didn’t really do it right so my mom started doing it for me instead and after i actually had it cut the right way i loved how it turned out! I roll my hair with brush rollers and dry it with a bonnet dryer and the whole process takes me around an hour. I loveee this hairstyle and can easily see myself having it my whole life. If you’re wanting to give it a try, I’d say do it! It’s such a fun style and people are complementing my hair alllll the time❤️
@@LizVonVillas this video is the best explaining I've heard so far for haircutting....but may I suggest a little more lighting if you redo it or do other styles in future please? thank you!

If you're taking requests, do you have a variety of clip and scarf do's that can be done alternative to a full set like this? For "next days" when you have some curls and want something cute?
Thanks so much for a nice review! I appreciate it! Okay, that’s a great idea for a video, I’d be happy to film that 😊
You look gorgeous! Great tutorial. Thank you
I'm so happy you made this video! I've been wanting to get a cut like that for a long time and never had the courage to try and do it myself. I followed your example and I'm in love with the cut, specially having curly hair I didn't even have to pincurl it to get a super cute set 😍😍😍😍
Yayyy!!! 🥰😁 I’m soooo happy for you! ❤️❤️
@@LizVonVillas thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful!
Thank you so much! I've been trying to find the best way to cut this exact hairstyle forever! The cutting diagram was especially helpful
You’re so welcome! 💖
Also I love your makeup! Maybe you should do a makeup tutorial
Thank you! I have a makeup tutorial for a very similar look but I could do another one with these colors 🥰
Awesome!! 💕🤩 glad you found it useful!
You are perfect!! Just gorgeous!!
Your face.... and even your mimic... Wowwwww it's so similar to hers!!! The hair you did very beautiful, when she wouldn't have turned into blond, she would have looked as you do! Love, Sabine
Aw thanks! What a lovely compliment! 💖
Id love to see a second day re roll.
Noted! 💕
So l had hair down to my lower back, recently cut it to my shoulders, still not in love, l think l will do this, thank you for helping me find what l really wanted! You rock!
You are so beautiful, totally rock this hairstyle!
Omg my hair is already short like Marilyn’s and people have literally told me I look like her so many times I’m so excited to do this thank u so much 💜
I love it! You look amazing!! and it is very accurated with Marilyn's hair. Congratulations!!
Thank you! 💕
Ahh! I’d love a video showing the products & brushes you use and think are best for this 🥹
Wow that looks great, I was always a fan of when Marilyn had her shorter cuts. Her hair in "Clash By Night" from 1952 springs to mind. Seems that hair styles in the 50s were shorter than many people tend to realize.
I did the same thing. I saw a January 1952 footage of her getting into a car with a mob around the car. And I went to town.
My hair was till my knees like 3 years ago,I did it shorter year by year now it’s like yours, and I’m happy!
Oh wow, that’s a big change! I’m so glad you’re happy with it now 😁❤️
I freaking love your honesty & humor. By the way you killed this look. So good!!! I’m tempted to get this cut but I know in the mornings I will feel like a 80s skate boarder 🤣 as you said.
Thank you! 😁💖😂
Watched some of your old vidéos and find your New style very beautiful, wardrobe and hair are perfect !
Yeah my style has definitely evolved since I started my channel! And I'm happy to say I'm very pleased with my look currently, (and also just being way more comfortable on camera helps! lol) thank you so much! ❤️
This was one of the best tutorials on UA-cam. Brava!
And you are NOT talking too much. Just the right amount.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that 💕
Thank you, I try to be conscious of people's time, but I also want to be thorough! 💕
You look so much like Rose Mcgowan, so beautiful ♥️
Aw thanks 🥰❤️
I finally did it! I've been wanting to cut my hair like this but I was hesitating... and yesterday I followed your tutorial. My hair is very big, curly, floofy. Hard to manage. But I brushed and styled it ONCE this morning and it's been hours, but it still looks the same! Thank you so much for this!!!
Yay!! I’m so happy to hear it worked out for you!! 😍
Gorgeous! Love it so much, thanks!
Yay! I’m so glad 🥰
@@LizVonVillas You just made my day!!😊
LOL i WATCHED YOUR VIDEO AN HOUR AGO.. and I went to a local store around my house and I found the same ones!! I'm so happy you can't imagine haha I'm in Bogotá. Colombia. What a casuality
I’m a hairstylist and I’m trying to go hear free for a year so I’m definitely going to use this for my marilyn costume this year
Your hair will be so healthy! 💕
you look and sound so similar to winona ryder 😍 also thank you for the tutorial, im growing my hair out atm so once it gets a bit longer im 100% gonna try this out!
Thanks for watching! 💕 good luck when you try it out!
I have a regular layered bob, but I will definitely be rolling my hair tonight using your tips! 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I’ve done it before but I’m gonna EXTRA hard this time to do it right lol
How did it turn out?!
@@LizVonVillas I’ve realized that rolling on wet hair for me just never works, no matter what I do. The inside is never dry🥲 SO I did it on air dried hair and just spritzed each piece slightly and it came out nice!! The only thing is, I can’t do a true brush out because of how a brush affects my hair texture; so I kinda just combed the curls, shaped them, and it was pretty good👍🏼👍🏼
I've watched my quote of Marilyn Monroe hairstyle tutorial and I think, by far, this is the best I've seen. Amazing! And a great video too!
Thank you! So glad you found it helpful! 💗
It’s such a fun style and people are complementing my hair alllll the time❤️
Ooo exciting!! I hope you love your new style! 💖
@@LizVonVillasI beyond love it! It’s an obsession at this point lol.
this video is AMAZING, you deserve way more views!
Aww thank you! 🥰 I’m working on improving my consistency and video quality so hopefully that will be the outcome! ❤️
@@LizVonVillas this video is the best explaining I've heard so far for haircutting....but may I suggest a little more lighting if you redo it or do other styles in future please? thank you!
@@chrisoliva530 Thanks, I appreciate it! I will definitely get more light in any future hair videos. My house is pretty dark and I didn't even think to use my ring light... d'oh!
Thanks sooo much! I'm currently hyperfixating on the 60s so this is very epic!
You look lovely. Gonna give this a try. My innovation: mark the hair lengths on my comb to eliminate the ruler and streamline the process
How clever!! Good luck!
Fantastic thanks. I've been rolling like this but I needed the cut.
Great clear directions! And your vid is so fun to watch❣️ Keep em coming!!
🥰❤️ thanks Robo
Im going to try and get my hair cut like this soon. I cant do my own.
This tutorial was so thorough. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can’t believe you figured out how to do this cut yourself! Great job.
Some bullets were sweat when I first chopped it off 😂 but it was so worth it!! Thank you! 💕
I’ve cut my own hair for years now, but that was a fancy/ specific cut! Again, good work. The outcome is perfect.
Now that your hair is longer, please please do a tutorial on the "before" for this haircut 🙏 I'm not quite brave enough to go this short, my length is a little longer now like your most recent video but I want to shorten it a little and get the shaping in the photo you showed here as the before all styled.
Okay, I can do something like that in a couple of months! It needs to get a little longer, but I’ve been meaning to trim it.
