    Great recollections and stories from Jack Neary, a guy who I always liked and had respect for. Those were truly the "good old days." BTW, I was once listed as a member of the 'Weider Research Clinic."

      Hi Jerry, big fan. I just wanted to say hello. I really loved the interviews you did on Ric's Drasin's show. RIP for Ric, who I know was a good friend of yours and a loss to the BBing community.

    John I attended the 77 and 78 Olympias in Columbus. Incredible seats 3rd row center. Anyway I think Franco or Zane won the show but Ed Corey was the star. He had the crowd going nuts. In fact Mike Mentzer and Joe Weider were front row center, and while Corney was posing they were standing up FACING THE AUDIENCE in disbelief at what they were witnessing.
    Zane and Franco were both outstanding but if Corey had been named champion no one would have been surprised. I will never forget that night

    I got to give John my sympathy and say how much of a gentleman he was at the 10:55 mark because of the fact that he didn't mentioned the podcast's name. I was watching it in the day it was posted on UA-cam and honestly I felt like the guys wasn't being respectful about Frank Zane. He's by far the most aesthetically pleasing champion ever

    Arnold at BEST was 4th or 5th, but with so many friends on the judging panel... CHRIS DICKERSON was in AMAZING condition!!

    • @Sirgromulus
      @Sirgromulus 3 роки тому +3

      I agree. While he had one the worst structures and genetics of any Mr. Olympia, I also think Dickerson deserved the win in 1980, and perhaps even in 981 (although Danny Padilla was in crazy shape as well).
      Chris turned 81 in 2020 and had a terrible year. He had a heart attack, broke his hip, and even had COVID. I wonder how he is doing today.

    It's unfortunate (or notable) that one of the most used pictures from the 80 Olympia is the standing 'relaxed' line up where Arnold has obviously totally relaxed his shoulders, and head, down and the others haven't....you can see in other less used pictures when he is hitting the relaxed pose fully how much wider he looked. Not saying it's just the use of pictures but certainly the overuse of that one certainly isn't the best or most balanced representation. That said, thighs in particular were clearly really down on his 71-74 self.

    I was 13 and working at the Gym in Red Deer when Arnold came to do the seminar Jack is talking about. I remember Jack being there. This was after the 80' Olympia just before Conan came out. The way I recall it, Arnold was already mad a Jack for his article about the Olympia.

    Arguments can be made for Mentzer, Coe, or Dickerson in 1980.
    They were all in better shape than Arnold.

    John, I wish you would do some shows and the scams of the supplement market that fleeces a lot of young impressionable people and some not so young. You and I are basically the same age. I grew up about an hour or so north of Chicago just outside of Rockford, IL.

    Hey Joe can we tour the Weider lab? Well there isn’t one really. My wife just fills the containers with cocoa powder and we slap a label on it

    • @theemptyatom
      @theemptyatom 3 роки тому

      Lol. Exactly. It may be true that they (the Weider scams) made a lot of money doing the things they did, but for some reason people think if you "bank" it makes it okay. It is tragic how it is allowed for people like Weider and others in the "fitness" world to just lie and make crap up when it comes to things like "supplements" that people are consuming into their bodies. Taking advantage of young impressionable people does not merit greatness in my book. I was fortunate enough to know back then how much chemical help, genetics, etc played into and not the latest "super powder" but a lot of young people did not and wasted a lot of money on junk supplements, which is still going on to this very day and it is disturbing.

    With all due respect, Mr. Neary should've read Robby Robinson's book before commenting about Mr. Robinson's experiences in Vietnam.

    • @JOECANDELA22
      @JOECANDELA22 3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for pointing that out. You are correct, the whole Vietnam incident did not happen, it was made up. Robby specifically referred to Jack's article and even printed a photo of the cover of that magazine in his book. He explained that he never went to Vietnam although he was an Army veteran who served. Robby explained how the whole "sole survivor" of a Vietcong attack was all made up. Otherwise, I have always enjoyed Mr. Neary's articles in Muscle Builder/Power magazine (which later became Muscle & Fitness magazine).

      @@kurtvonfricken6829 Hey Kurt, thanks for your response. If your a Robby fan I would suggest going to his website and checking out his book. Interesting read. Also, as far as Mike Mentzer going to medical school, my recollection (I could be wrong) was that he was an undergraduate pre-med major. He was a student of philosophy and I think his other major was psychology. Smart man and well read but he had some mental issues which unfortunately plagued him. I met him at the Night of the Champions and he was a gentleman and a bodybuilding great that should always be remembered.
