A few years later, she started showing signs of Alzheimer’s, and since then has been falling ever deeper into the haze of her own mind. I’m 18 now, and one of the greatest things I’ve found about getting older and *marginally* wiser is returning to old media and finding new meanings that were previously hidden from me as a child, and I realize now that my grandmother was probably crying because she knew she was already starting to lose track of things, and likewise I probably knew the same to some extent. Today, she oftentimes can barely remember my name, and as such I can scarcely bring myself to visit her anymore for fear of confronting the shell of what I’ve lost, but every now and then she has moments of sudden clarity - usually brought on by old pieces of media that she held dear in her younger days - where we can hold a coherent conversation and reminisce on what we once had, and those moments give me hope, however briefly, that she’s still there. I’m so glad I got to watch this episode with her while she was still all together, and I’ll never let go of the good memories she gave me. But sometimes I wonder, if I were to show her this episode, and I sat down and watched it with her, would she remember her grandson sitting on the floor of her living room asking why a cartoon was making him cry? Would she remember crying with him, knowing that to answer would only confuse and upset him? Would she see me then, 10 years after the fact, and know that I understand now, and would give anything to spend just one minute with her as I so desperately want to remember her? Would she remember me?

PB is _weirdly_ similar to Betty on a lot of levels, her being a bit of an amoral psycho may have been the thing separating her from the normal human being that was Betty, but once Betty gets to Ooo she very quciky reaches the same level of moral disregard.
Huntsman Avadear was the father Marcaline had. But Simon was the father she needed. Seeing his face every time, was like seeing the warped memory of the real father she’d lost. But after crying her heart out to lament one of the most selfless and compassionate humans left in Ooo, she’d been able to move on, and see that, while Simon was gone, Ice King still had that same kindness deep down.
You have to be there man, nowdays there's plenty of kids shows that try to blend serialized and episodic styles. But none are as special as adventure time. You just didn't see these tragic backstories with side characters in an apocalyptic world on a kids' show. It was unheard of. Adventure Time was so special because it respected kids' intelligence and not saw them as idiots, and it had the balls to do this kind of episodes which everyone loves.
Fr, I watched Holly Jolly Secrets the day it aired on CN expecting a funny Christmas special and instead I was left with existential dread and a sadness that I didn’t even have the exact source of until the next Monday ( because we only got one episode a week which sounds wild with streaming services nowadays lol) and then I was hooked. Every single week I’d wait just to see if it was another Simon and Marcy episode lmao. It also gave Marcy more character because before Simon and Marcy arc , she was kind of a jerk and not really easy to understand with the full picture.

A year late but if you want more in the style of adventure time watch Centaurworld. A near-perfect mix of zaniness, heart, and just pure nightmare fuel
This episode and the song "Remember You" really hit me hard earlier this year. I started watching AT for the first time and got to this episode just around when I started dealing with some really bad neurological issues. I was dealing with tremors, migraines, dizzy spells, and, yes, even hour-long memory gaps. In other words, I was "losing myself" like Simon did. I was off at college and didn't have many friends. I could barely leave my house. I felt so scared and alone. Listening to "Remember You" during that time made me feel seen and helped me get through so much. I can't explain in words how much this episode means to me and other people who have dealt with memory loss and dementia, whether in themselves or friends and family ❤
i dont know if this is the episode to bring it up but i wish you had touched on the parallels of Marcy and Magic Betty. Marcy learns that Simon is gone and she can just be chill with ice king while Betty becomes obsessed with trying to bring Simon back. she almost became friends with ice king in the Patience St. Pim episode (i think). they both have fun being crazy but then Betty finds new hope of bring him back and rekindles her obsession. i would like you to talk about how Betty and Marcy are the only people who knew/miss Simon *and* now are left with ice king
I'm mad that none of them properly meet each other even when the series ended. Marcy could even try to help Betty deal with this grief and probably spark a mother-daughter dynamic that Marceline hasn't experience ever since she was a kid.
I can't remember when I first saw this episode, but after this, I realized how important this show is to me. Absolutely amazing song writing by Rebecca Sugar 💮
I love how ice king gets to say to Marceline what he probably always wanted to say for a long time "Please forgive me for whatever I do. When I don't remember you.". All these lyrics are what he's probably kept inside for the sake of small Marceline. But it's even better with the fact that he's apologising for someone he knows he inevitably will be, and all he can do is watch as all this will happen. And we (sadly) have proof and conformation of that person, right in front of us. The ice king. Who sees no meaning in those words anymore other than cool lyrics. I know probably everyone knows this, but I find it to be such a great and incredible scene.
That quick assessment of the No Smoking shirt hit me really hard, because I had never picked up on that, and yet your assessment made a lot of sense, and the implications are profound.
My grandmother (who has had iffy morals before so I have complex feelings about this) has dementia so I totally resonate with this in a way. She met me post-transition and said she probably once knew me, that I’m beautiful, but that she doesn’t currently know who I am. It’s bittersweet. 💜
I read somewhere that this episode came about by pulling two character names out of a hat or something like that, it’s really cool that one of the deepest episodes and one that changed the trajectory of the show came about because they felt the normal character combos were getting stale.
I wrote this show off as mostly "not for me" until I saw clips from "Holly Jolly Secrets", which opened up a level of depth to the show I didn't think was there - but, it's how "I Remember You" followed up on that reveal that really sold this show to me; I still tear up every time I watch it. It truly set the tone for what adventure time was going to become, and recontextualized so much about the earlier episodes that made them worth watching for me.
I still remember the first three episodes of Adventure Time I ever saw: "Trouble in Lumpy Space", "The Real You", and "Simon & Marcy"... What a spectrum of episodes.
this episodes worst crime was the cut to finn and jake saying "whats going on in there?!" MID SONG. AND IN THE OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK, IN THAT EXACT SPOT OF THE SONG, THEY MAKE THE SONG MUFFLED BECAUSE OF THEM SPEAKING. so there is genuinely no full version of the song with the two singing clearly all the way through just because finn and jake felt the need to make a comment in the middle of it.
I love how the show was like, hey, you know that one side character who is sort of a villain but not really? What if he is one of, if not the most tragic characters in animation history. I love I Remember You. I don’t think I have ever watched it and not cried. Even as a little kid when the episode aired.
Man, your talk [up to 8:54 since I paused to type this out] made my 2 brain cells connect and realize something. Marceline, despite all the pain, still chose to interact with Ice King going forward after this even if Simon is long gone (at least for the time being as far as she and we the audience knew). One could argue Marcy calling him "Simon" shows a sense of denial that he's gone but Marcy doesn't try to get her Simon back, but gets to know Ice King potentially even seeing him as a looney father figure (who, mind you, she wanted PB to accept him during that dinner sess despite the kidnapping history an such), even if she's calling him a name that he doesn't remember going by. This is a interesting thing to realize when you remember Betty and then her transition into Magic Woman. Betty but more so Magic Woman, desperate to get Simon back, ignores Ice King being a person, HIS own person. To give credit where it's due, MW did try to see Ice King as a person as per Magic Manticore's advice (since the person she's looking for is likely long dead or WILL die without the crown or so keeping him alive in a twisted way). It's unknown if MW would've liked Ice King after spending enough time with him because remember when she tried, Patience St. Pim fucked it up by kidnapping MW to use as a battery and then that mess lead into the Elementals Mini Series and by the time MW tried so again, she had a means in front of her to get Simon back and maybe if if the temptation was there and if she had more time, maybe things would've gone differently. Or maybe not. It's interesting to note that, I think Marcy is able to move on since she knew Simon as a young kid and even as a Vampire Demon who may also suffer from MMS (magic, madness and sadness). If the vampires don't count for magic in nature, then it makes a decree of sense why Marcy didn't go off the deep end sooner, if they do, Marcy has her Restraining Bolts in the form of PB (childhood romance/a long living person who'd understand Marcy the most when it comes down to it), Finn (a reminder of the good she did of her past, her lost humanity, humanity itself, etc), etc. Now thinking about it, if it's the latter, maybe that's another reason why Marcy has Ice King in her live again, bonds may ease MMS's symptoms and make said person feel grounded in a way. 11:15 HAMBO Can we talk about the doll symbolism rq? (Hell this sounds like a fun video idea, haha) Hambo was given to Young Marcy by Simon, showing it's and Simon's emotional care for Marcy growing up even if the latter ends up gone but then her asshole ex, Ash sold it, show how he doesn't care for Marceline, only for PB, another ex of Marcy's to give her back Hambo from the Sky Witch, despite Marcy leaving out the details of why she asked for PB's help (and as later on revealed, they had a bad break up on both ends having their own issues). PB still helped despite not understanding a toy's value but DOES still care about Marcy enough to know that "It means a lot to Marcy, so it's still important." And then it's Marcy who gives up Hambo for good to help out Simon, and it ends up bringing Betty into the future, to sooner give Simon a happy end. Marcy willingly giving up Hambo says so much. She's repaying the kindness Simon gave to her centuries ago and also, it feels like Marcy was mentally okay enough to do so, since she actually has a friend and support group now even if she still has issues to work through to show that she cares and such. It's so beautiful to me. 11:42 "She has to deal with a constant reminder..." You putting this out also makes me think. I cannot help but feel like with how Marcy, likely having a form of PTSD from getting turned, she has to wake up everyday living through that but by seeing Simon's poems, she able to sooner make peace there and accept what happened. It felt like a step she had to take before trying to take the future steps to try to self improve (removing and later accepting her vampirism). Also, idk if some people are unhappy Simon came back at the end of Adventure Time to stay but I'm happy he did. Marcy has suffered so much in her life, she deserves many bones to be thrown at her to get more happy endings in there. Also Also, it's probably obvious from the essay I wrote, lmao but Marceline is probably my top favorite character in the show. At first glance, I just found her cool and awesome but over the years, I found myself relating to her beyond surface level, especially when the Stakes! Miniseries happened and beyond. Feeling so lonely and sad, and while wanting friends, feeling like they cannot understand your struggles and on some level, you don't want them to because then, they'll become as damaged and broken as your are, and you don't want that for people you care about. And also the fear of losing them due to the truths about you. So even if you have friends, you emotionally keep them at arm's length. But to anyone feeling that way, things do get better and like with a lot of things in life, you have to fight to get her happier ending. Marcy is truly my Queen, and one of my favorite Queens in animation history.
Man, it really makes sense why this is a universally loved and appraised fan-favorite. With all the emotional beats and just the right amount of humor sprinkled in, this is definitely one of the top 5 best episodes (for a lot of fans, I'd say). I remember watching this episode for the first time as a young teen and it felt like I gained consciousness. It will always have a really special place in my heart! Have you ever considered doing an episode on Blank Eyed Girl? It's legit my favorite episode of the show for it's great jokes and humor. Makes me burst out laughing every time, despite having seen it dozens of times (especially the ending iykyk). Thanks for another great video dude!! Looking forward to your next banger (and 15k 🎉)!
thank you! - and I think I might cover every horror episode of Adventure Time in a video for Halloween, so Blank Eyed Girl would definitely be a part of that :)
This is one of the episodes that got me into this show. I had dismissed it due to my dislike of cartoons at the time, but this played one time when my siblings were watching TV snd i was immediately interested. The relationship between Marceline and Simon is still my favorite part of this show.
You touched on this but the shift this episode changed absolutely everything about not just the show but the animation industry and the people who watched it. Before this I watched cartoons as a fun distraction I mean I was a kid of course that’s what I did, and I saw this episode and while I didn’t fully understand it’s depth as I was still an innocent kid, it changed my perspective, it moved me, shocked me, something no other show I watched had done before. Then Rebecca sugar would give me Steven universe which fully changed my perspective and outlook on life and would further shake up the animation industry to have a large focus on telling emotional stories. I would even grow up to admit understand marceline and how she felt, but luckily for me I already knew that I wasn’t alone
thinking about the lyrics to nuts "Every time I move eventually you find me and start hanging around" maybe that's partly why ice king tries to hangs around the tree fort with finn and jake so much, since its her old house...
Things that people never mention is the fact that Marceline did'nt really understand before this episode how much really forget everything, She was trying to avoid him at some point was accusing him for his behavior because she still was thinking that he still has some memories about his past.
If I remember the writers wrote out this heart-wrenching story in order to fill up the plot hole they left where ice king sang Marcy’s song even thought they have never met in the series up until now, it all started because of a joke
in the song "Nuts", i legitimately thought the lyrics went like "i thought you were nice. but your really. really. REALLY. not" for like the longest time until very recently when a clip of it from the cartoon network channel was recommended to me and thats when I realized the actual words. Maybe I was too young to realize since Ice king did push her and started blasting the ceiling so it made me think she was singing about him not being nice but either way it fits into the situation. actually maybe the reason I heard it is the same reason people hear "concrete jungle wet dream tomato" in that one Jay Z song "empire state of mind" ok im done talking. carry on with your day.
This episode is probably my favorite Adventure Time episode. When I was younger, I didn't fully understand this situation, but now, at 20 years old, I really get it. Especially the part where Ice King says that he's "so alone". That hit close to home, since I consider myself to be truly alone as well. I don't have and never had what I've always sought: to make a friend. Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble. Great episode, and great analysis by your part, as always. Atlas, signing off.
This video really just made me cry. I love this episode of AT and these two characters specifically. It’s definitely one of the best parts og the whole series. Good job on this episode
This is easily one of the best episodes of Adventure Time. The connection between Marceline and Ice King was both very surprising and emotional. The song at the end is both good and sad and it always brings a tear to my eye.
Instead of a metaphor for dementia i think its a metaphor for losing someone to addiction. 1) because everyone is disgusted by ice king and his madness and 2) because he said things like forgive me, It wasnt me it was the crown
what makes me cry the most in the last song is that Ice king was reading his own writing. Saying what he wanted to say to marcy 1000 years ago, but not getting any of it as ice king.
I've seen so much sad shit in animation and this little dive into Simon and Marcy's story still makes tears free flow. Not even Up's intro does that to me anymore. Can't even be content with where shit ended because, sure, we got Simon back, but at the cost of his princess. He just never wins. Looking forward to watching Fiona and Cake when I get the chance
The worst part of this for me is when Ice King tried to kiss Marcy. Luckily, I haven’t experienced sexual abuse so i can’t imagine what its like for someone that you view as a caregiver doing that to you… That would mess me up.
I remember when this episode aired, I remember crying but I'm not sure.I also remember this is when this show got good and started its arcs and character building. I remember thinking where will the show go, but now that im here all i can think is take me back but i guess thats just nostalgia
I love how in the part of the song where ice kings reading one of the notes he looks kinda disturbed. As if deep down something remembered writing those words
Finn and Jake's reaction to Simon harmonizing(I guess) with Marcy was probably the same reaction a lot of us kids had, like wtf was going on? Wasn't he the bad guy? What is this backstory?
the only thing i don't like about this episode is that the story board originally depicted simon literally climbing into the freezer instead of on top cuz i think that would have been way better
small aside theory. I wonder if part of the reason she likes eating red is because the gems in the crown are red. I wonder if she ever wants to just try eating them to get Simon back.
as someone who's lost family to dementia.. this episode DESTROYS me every time and i have to thank the AT crew for making it. because if you've been marci. you understand.. and if you've never been marci. it gives you a glimps of what it's like there is the person you love.. they are RIGHT THERE!!! but it's not them.. you lost them.. and you can just every once in awhile see a glimpse of them. but they are gone.. and you arn't getting them back edit: along the same tone is a song i also love but also hurts me when i hear it for the same reasons ua-cam.com/video/IY8rOSyR5Rw/v-deo.htmlsi=uIwixP9Tsc4zJHXK
i stopped watching adventure time around i think season 6, feeling like what i wanted the show to be and what the show wanted to be weren't really compatible anymore (it was the one where finn grew his arm back gosh i was upset LOL) but it's kind of amazing the show stuck with this plot thread for so long. i remember the ice king slowly becoming an actual character. and now he's still getting developed as simon as recently as this year.
this episode made me wanne watch al the adventure time episodes before that i was what is this weird cartoon it explains the world is just 1000 years after the bombs fell the side charecter got unkown dept not just silly fantasies and it got me emotionally invested in the joke character by a good song
I kinda hope there is not Interaction between Simon and Marceline in the upcoming series because it would defeat the satisfaction of Come Along With Me's ending

I think the biggest punch in the second song of the episode is the implication that the reason Marceline kept moving like in her first appearance was to avoid Ice King and what he represents to her

considering that Simon's petname for Betty was "Princess", it's pretty obvious that PB is a stand-in for Betty in Ice King's broken mind
we...been know this, that was the whole point of saying that in that episode, was that he kidnaps Princesses due to Betty but that doesnt say why Bubblegum is Nr1.@@dane1382
The same can apply to Doctor Princess. Who I think is the second most common target of Ice King's affections.
I just wish some cartoons would just focus on episodic stuff than try to force in some serious story to be more adult.
I'm still not over how Star Vs. Was treated
@@boshwa20ok but SVTFOE had a lot of potential with its lore with Toffee and Meteora and the whole racism allegory, but decided to be some useless ass shipfest
@@luqmanfariswan4024I mean Marceline had a great mother tho..
I can't remember when I first saw this episode, but after this, I realized how important this show is to me. Absolutely amazing song writing by Rebecca Sugar 💮
Song title?
(Note: I could be totally wrong about this and it might just be a rumor, I never fact checked this one)
This is the one episode I remember basically changing everything we knew about the Ice King. And to be honest I kind of liked it even back then
I still remember the first three episodes of Adventure Time I ever saw: "Trouble in Lumpy Space", "The Real You", and "Simon & Marcy"...
One of my favorite episodes of the whole show. I still get teary eyed. Great discussion
I love how the show was like, hey, you know that one side character who is sort of a villain but not really? What if he is one of, if not the most tragic characters in animation history.
I love I Remember You. I don’t think I have ever watched it and not cried. Even as a little kid when the episode aired.
I think the No Smoking shirt might be referring to how the Crown can make someone lose them selves similar to hard drugs

HAMBO
Can we talk about the doll symbolism rq?
11:42
"She has to deal with a constant reminder..."
You putting this out also makes me think.
Honestly this episode is one of the best episodes in cartoon history
Looking forward to your next banger (and 15k 🎉)!
thank you! -
and I think I might cover every horror episode of Adventure Time in a video for Halloween, so Blank Eyed Girl would definitely be a part of that :)
Ive wanted this video for a long time. Def the best adventure time song and one of the best episodes
in the song "Nuts", i legitimately thought the lyrics went like "i thought you were nice. but your really. really. REALLY. not" for like the longest time until very recently when a clip of it from the cartoon network channel was recommended to me and thats when I realized the actual words. Maybe I was too young to realize since Ice king did push her and started blasting the ceiling so it made me think she was singing about him not being nice but either way it fits into the situation. actually maybe the reason I heard it is the same reason people hear "concrete jungle wet dream tomato" in that one Jay Z song "empire state of mind"
ok im done talking. carry on with your day.
There's also the fact Simon kept going back to the crown even though it was fucking him up.
this is legit the most underrated youtube channel in existance
what makes me cry the most in the last song is that Ice king was reading his own writing. Saying what he wanted to say to marcy 1000 years ago, but not getting any of it as ice king.
Simon/ Ice King is one of my favorite characters cause he’s wacky, creative, smart, dorky, and sympathetic

Rewatching this episode after having watched Fiona and Cake, I gasped when I saw this shot. What an incredible detail.
One of my favorite episodes. Made AT really stand out
I think you emphasize Simons struggle enough, this episode is more than a just tragedy episode for Marcy, it’s also a tragedy for Simon
this episode on its own sums up the dynamic because of which they're my favourite duo
The worst part of this for me is when Ice King tried to kiss Marcy. Luckily, I haven’t experienced sexual abuse so i can’t imagine what its like for someone that you view as a caregiver doing that to you… That would mess me up.
OH MY GOD, THIS IS A VIDEO PRE-FIONA AND CAKE SERIES!
AMAZING!
Marceline tearing up at the chorus always gets me
I remember when this episode aired, I remember crying but I'm not sure.I also remember this is when this show got good and started its arcs and character building. I remember thinking where will the show go, but now that im here all i can think is take me back but i guess thats just nostalgia

Fantastic analysis!!! I love this
thank you !!
This video is amazing, and this episode is amazing. I love this show so much.
Just warm. Despite his appearance, his character is warm
This show deserve to be in the timeless hall of fame
This song (remember you) ...actually reduced me to tears the first time I saw this episode.
watching this episode after Fionna and cake's ep 2 really changes my point of virw
small aside theory. I wonder if part of the reason she likes eating red is because the gems in the crown are red. I wonder if she ever wants to just try eating them to get Simon back.
No, it's because it is similar to blood.
as someone who's lost family to dementia.. this episode DESTROYS me every time
and i have to thank the AT crew for making it. because if you've been marci. you understand.. and if you've never been marci. it gives you a glimps of what it's like

i stopped watching adventure time around i think season 6, feeling like what i wanted the show to be and what the show wanted to be weren't really compatible anymore (it was the one where finn grew his arm back gosh i was upset LOL) but it's kind of amazing the show stuck with this plot thread for so long. i remember the ice king slowly becoming an actual character. and now he's still getting developed as simon as recently as this year.
