This simulation is quite literally a nightmare scenario. There is absence of information due to the fog of war, and trying to get more information takes up time you don't have, giving you absence of action. It's very cruel, and terrifying to think that this could potentially happen
I'd say it's an unrealistic setup. Any president or decision maker in that position would at the very least have a deep understanding of their own militaries capabilities and have some established doctrine around how to respond. Their would also be longer lead up that would provide context to diplomatic situation around the conflict. Countries don't just randomly start slinging nukes at each others population centers. You'd have a lead up that would be months if not years in the making.
@@chriskerwin3904 yes, It's unrealistic that way, though it completes the objective of understanding the average person's decision making skills under stress with very high pressure. Though in reality, once any type of shady business starts a behind the scene plan will also start (more so, defense and offense planning in case of emergencies)
Imagine this but at space scales. The game theory prevents some of the necessary communication at all due to the speed of light, so decisions have to be made in the absence of information about the threat.
Nuke em
May be true but the point of a nuclear deterrent is that it's existance is so it's never fired. Nobody wants to pay billions of pounds or dollars a year for a system a scared leader won't use evemif

As a military officer I can say that these simulations are way more stressful than they seem. When you're in the role, you actually have limited time to make decisions while pondering every potential consequence. It's difficult, but you do learn a lot. Great video.
So, what do you think will be the response of this current administration if Russia and/or China sends nuclear weapons to both East and west coasts?
@@taoist32 Pretty much the same as any previous administration would've been. Pacifism and Humanism die when the nukes fly. That's the big lesson you can take from this video.
This is why we do drills and go over most scenarios over and over so that even something like this is muscle memory. Coming from a ballistic missile submariner.
Richard Feynman once said that the thing that impressed him most about a general was his ability to stare out of a window for a few minutes and make a decisive decision.
My decision would be to do nothing.
There is nothing you can do. The nukes are going to land no matter what you do. I would never inform the public. There is no point in causing the last few minutes of their lives to be distraught. Responding to such an attack would be that of the attackers. The outcome of the attack would be the support of the people once you go on the news to explain the loss of the people, the question should be why did they attack us in the first place.
The scenario is really simplified and in regards to actual nuclear strategy and response options. Their "small scale" is actually known as counter-value strikes (cities, infrastructure, industry) and their "large scale" is actually called counter-force (strictly military, with emphasis on nuclear assets.) They are not mutually exclusive in reality. Pre-set response plans called SIOPs exist for a spectrum of mixing the two and it is also an option to go counter-force first and escalate (or retaliate) using gradual or full send counter value, after seeing what the enemy targeting was. There's also the strategy of which weapons to employ and when - for example you likely lose 90% of your silo based missiles when the timer hits zero so they are use it or lose it, before the incoming strike impacts. But your submarines can be held for a second strike.
My response would be:
1. All bombers scramble instantly upon warning. 1 second into the scenario, i want my bombers loaded and safely up off the ground ASAP. They can always be recalled.
2. Immediate counter force launch with all ground based missiles the instant it is confirmed the Navy was struck. That's the absolutely sure act of war line. Arguably the EMP could be, but the advisors did not seem to have 100% confidence that was enemy action. Bombers released to proceed to targets.
3. Absorb the incoming strike, see what was hit. And respond accordingly...
- If the enemy only targeted military assets, order bombers to strike surviving enemy military assets and if no more viable strategic targets, re task for tactical strikes on any enemy mobile forces (fleets or armies.) Stand down submarines, go deep and quiet. These are my reserve deterrence against further enemy nuclear strikes, or escalation to counter value targeting our cities and long term, deterrence against OUTSIDE interference while the country is down and rebuilding. Conventional forces. Finish the fight with conventional forces.
- If the enemy strike was counter value aimed and our cities are gone, order bombers and submarines to launch a full counter value retaliation and annihilate the enemy economic potential. Including its draft and labor pool. Hold at least two loaded subs in reserve for aforementioned outside deterrence. Conventional forces disperse and withdraw home. Nothing left to conquer and we need the organized forces for homeland disaster relief.
When a leader says “ I want it to be peaceful as possible” that leaders nation is getting cooked 💀
Not sure if you noticed but she "pressed the button". It's far better to have a leader who weighs up the consequences of their actions.
@@lamsmiley1944 it is but by taking too long to make a decision can lead to more of their people dying. When they do something is perhaps more important than what they do.
There is a big difference between weighing up the consequences of your actions and being indecisive or having a breakdown. In the last minute or so she wasted lots of time effectively stalling pushing the button and that was very unproductive, that wasn’t reasoning or weighing up the consequences, that was just time wasting because she didn’t want to do it.
@@conorstewart2214 it’s vital that you take as much time as possible to verify the validity of the threat. There has been multiple false alarms that if acted upon straight away would have resulted in nuclear war.
@@lamsmiley1944 yes thats true, but not the way she went about it. The second she heard option 2# she shouldve gone for ir. Option one is automatic no, why tf attack civilians just cause. (in option 2 is different cause they're collateral, we're not tryna kill them we tryna disable their military). Option 3, never, they're killing our people, i'd rather die fighting than pleading. Samething for option 4, we're not gonna do nothing. The faster we respond back the better chance we got at stopping more lifes lost, so its important to take the decisions in a snap
Morals. Even in a while presidential scale, morals are still to be upheld as much as possible.
What a great episode. This sheds light on something that most people don't ever get to wonder, the weigh of your decision.
Obama wrote this : "So, I ran a tight process. I trusted my team. I listened to every voice in the room. I gave myself space to think. And then I made a decision that reflected my own personal sense of what was right. While I couldn’t guarantee the outcome, I was confident in making the decision."
Such a polar opposite of the man who succeeded him 😔. "I know everything better than the experts, and if anyone tries to argue with me I tell them to shut up".
With all the glorious but otherwise empty words he till deemed an ineffective present. The lesson is don't believe in bullshits. True character only shows in actions.

I grew up at a Manhattan Project nuclear site. It created plutonium for the Trinity test and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Watching this took me straight back to my childhood. We knew we were a target, we wore dog tags as kids, no duck and cover drills at our schools. We knew we were going to die. Every large building in our town was a fallout shelter. As kids, 5-6 years old, we knew where they all were and how many minutes it would take to get there. Ty for doing this video. I think the younger generation doesn’t see the impossible choices and consequences faced by a president. Being a 3rd generation nuclear worker made me proud bc I felt like I was helping to fight communism and keeping Americans safe. I feel like I did the right thing at the time. Ty Michelle!❤❤❤
little did you know you were brainwashed and don’t even know what communism is
Curious thing there is someone from the other side of the world who thinks exactly the same but change communist for americans, and both believe be the good guy
It's amazing (awful, but amazing) to hear that perspective. I've always had a weird concern for nuclear warfare even though I've never experienced the fallout (not a pun, I just can't think of a better term) of the warfare itself. Living along a coastline, I've often thought about what we would do and we don't know because it's not thought of much. It's hard to imagine that your understanding of where/how long to to to the bunks was, is equivalent to an arcade in the '00s or a club nowadays.
I don't usually post political opinions but with this being more real than ever, there's only one person I want in that chair..

@@darriendove8380 If nothing else, this episode needs to be submitted to an Emmy category, like "Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama Or Variety Series." That a UA-cam series hired legitimate actors, that they didn't break character, that they knew what to reply from their role's point of view, all the while dealing with someone stressing out about the ethics, not just playing it like a video game as many would do, that's really, really, really uncommon. It's playing out in real time, too, on a platform where either you shoot a ton and cut a ton, or you just post something overly long. This is the perfect length for the scenario presented.
this has me in tears and riddled with anxiety. this video was really well made and beautifully captures the reality that such a position of power holds in its responsibility and duty to millions, if not billions. The only thing I would've said to the Ambassador is "We have detected numerous nuclear launches and we are preparing a response. Unless you can provide me immediate proof that no such launches have taken place, we have nothing to discuss."
Personally, I would have begun mobilizing all armed forces, told civilians to seek immediate shelter, ready all reserve units, and immediately begin preparing for Option 2 (Large Nuclear Strike). You can't finesse a nuclear exchange, once one of them goes, they ALL go. That's WHY no one wants to use them, that's WHY we still have them.
With the addition..."you have 30 seconds, time starts now!"
which is why, after numerous "red lines", Russia still hasn't fired one - its because all hell can brake loose an no one knows had bad it will get
@@brainthesizeofplanet It’s also why there’s direct lines of communication to the Russian Head of State for this exact reason. No arguing with an ambassador, get Putin on the damn phone 😂😂
"That's WHY no one wants to use them, that's WHY we still have them." so just dont use them?
Counterpoint - Stanislav Petrov. Of course this incident may not be directly comparable and you should be able to trust that your detection systems are not faulty especially during times of increased tension, it still cannot be discounted.
In such a situation, it would be difficult for a foreign country to convincingly prove they have not launched their missiles within a few minutes (do you expect them to livestream views of their missile silos??) and even less likely that any explanation would convince you that it's just a "false alarm".
Do suggest a way to convincingly and instantly prove that missiles have not been fired and I will be more inclined to accept your logic.
That was unbelievably intense. Even knowing you are in a simulation, the overwhelming magnitude of your decision in that moment is almost impossible for any one person to bear, so all thoughts of this "this is just hypothetical" seemed to just disappear. And all the credit for it seeming so real is due to the actors who ran it. They really were incredible! I just hope that the world continues to see, through stuff like this, that there is no winning, for anyone, in nuclear conflicts. Amazing video, Michelle!!!!
You know what stuck with me? The moment she pushed the button and after that I felt a feeling of emptiness. OK I gave the order now what? She asked said: "Thats it??".

A large-scale nuclear attack on an opposing country's military could be seen as strategically beneficial for those seeking to swiftly cripple the enemy's defense capabilities, potentially leading to a faster end to conflict. By targeting military assets, the aggressor might aim to prevent prolonged warfare, which could otherwise result in even greater loss of life over time. Despite the tragic loss of lives, such an attack could be argued as a means to achieve a decisive victory, thereby minimizing future casualties and establishing long-term security.
Even though it seems inhumane, the OTHER country has done so already, meaning THERE IS NO RIGHT OPTION ANYMORE.
All in all- by wasting time, you just constrained yourself to the remaining time you had, as you had mentioned before it felt like you were backing yourself into a corner.😮💨
Your choice was a phenomenal decision, in my eyes, THE BEST DECISION.
Keep posting content, its amazing, to come back and see your videos.
P.S. Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov is a true hero ❤
Most of us would not be born if he said Y . E . S.
I totally agree with you
I understand your reasoning, and I think thats why Michelle decided to go with that option aswell. But you go and say that "Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov is a true hero", when he, in the exact same situation in his eyes as Michelle was given at the start, decided NOT to fight back, not to target civil nor military assets.
In your eyes, by your reasoning, in Vasili's shoes, you would've caused most of us to "not had been born", ever; because you would've said Y. E. S.
It's not my intention to confront you in any way, just thought it was an interesting dilemma, which highlights the point of the video.
NO, full force response was not the best decision; not in Vasili's shoes. Thats why he is a true hero.
@@Ggeeko Except in his shoes no Soviet ships were hit with missiles.
The only right option in this scenario was in the hands of the other country, and they chucked it out the window when they launched the nukes.
Besides, all your doing with a small-scale countervalue attack is nuking 10s of millions of innocent civilians to make a statement without even eliminating the threat. Perversely, eliminated military assets with counterstrike nukes, risking 100s of millions of civilians being collateral damage, becomes the least worse option. It's all truly MAD.
17:33 "That's it?" Madam President, we're just getting started.
I've noticed some copycats doing the same type of content as Michelle. Joe Blow tries Marine boot camp or whatever. Nobody does it like Michelle though. What a badass
Marine bootcamp is NOT an original concept. It has been done many times, and it'll keep being done. They aren't copycats, they're merely using a known formula, just like Michelle.
and people have done it before her? does that mean shes a copycat
Can't top Michelle in this game hahaha she's the real life Barbie of jobs 😂😂 and damnit she's the most entertaining at it too
@@modelotimefooooo1853 She's the most entertaining because she manufactures drama & situations to fit the heroe's journey. A lot of it is real, but a lot of it is also fake.
I like her videos when they aren't so fake that it completely takes me out. Her "I Tried Treasure Hunting" video is one such example: there was no way to suspend disbelief on that one.
To be fair, that's the youtube formula, it's what she's supposed to do, and videos can get boring if you limit yourself to what's actually happening organically. I just don't want to notice it too much :p And well, her production value is top-notch.
I don't care what any other UA-camr does. Michelle is without a doubt UA-cams dare devil. She is the first and, in my eyes the only one that does videos like this. I have been watching Michelle for a few years now and she does these videos justice. One, she is female, and most females wouldn't think of doing such videos. Two, because she is female, she does videos like the ones that she does. The videos challenge her to do or try to do the very best that she can.
I’ll be honest, initially I thought it was silly and that she was overreacting to this simulation. But when Michelle later said “one of the options was to bomb civilians to make a statement. That shouldn’t even be an option” 18:20 I teared up so fast.

Great acting, the truth is, if this situation was actually handled like this it would be far worse, some things should already be predetermined, like knowing that you can’t evacuate a whole city in 10 mins. And that millions would die. Honestly the best decision would be lean all the way, one way or the other. And make that decision quicker within 2 min of being told.
It’s so crazy the things she’s allowed to do now ever since she got FBI/CIA clearance.
Finished the video and the intensity of the situation is so sickening. I could never. I didn’t expect to be so emotional, but the thought of impending doom got to me.

This was one of the most emotional videos I’ve seen on this channel, this is amazing work.
Props to the editor, the actors, and the concept. Amazing.
This is what would never happen…
Sure the acting is good but the enemy would not be targeting cities first the first wave of nuclear missles (from both sides) would be targeting the others nuclear assets (silos, naval bases, air bases, mobile launching vehicles etc…) so their is actually not as much deaths as they say within that short time period. Even Russia and china today don’t want to kill everyone they just want to take out the power (millitary and government) of the USA and other NATO members. Then their is the SSBNs wich are nuclear submarines that can go anywhere in the world, undetected, then Launch their missiles then their are multiple launch profiles… blah blah blah. Just keep in kids this is not what would happen
The very fact that we are on the cusp of this type of situation is bone chilling . I am so proud of Michelle, showing us some of what the government does a lot of this kind of stuff is hidden a civilians and I feel like we have the right to know so kudos to her for bringing some of the stuff to light!!!

Its purposefully not shown. You know spies exist.?
The end is Americans get to vote for the person who might have to make such decisions in 3 months.
What I'd rather like is for Michelle how she came to the decision for the large scale attack. What was going through her mind?
@@BEstudent yes exactly, I just felt like the end was really abrupt
I just read “nuclear war a scenario” by Annie Jacobsen. In this book she describes a scenario in which North Korea launches an icbm. In this scenario it will take about 24 minutes for the missle to hit. And the president has 6 minutes to launch on warning. During this time he is escorted out by the secret services Assange embassy style.
The 6 minutes is in my opinion inhuman to decide on nuclear Armageddon.
If the US puts hypersonic missiles in Germany or if Ukraine starts hosting US weapons then Russia will have only 3-5 minutes to decide on nuclear Armageddon. Don't go there!
If it was only one ICBM launched by NK, there would be no nuclear Armageddon. Just a response that would utterly destroy Pyongyang and most of the PDRK military. it would only get dicey if China and/or Russia became involved, but I am certain we would tell them our intentions and that NK was the target in our response, so they should stay out of it if they want to live. I think they'd both stay out of it.
If you thought that was bad, what the US are doing in Europe with NATO and Ukraine are going to give the Russians 3-5 minutes to decide nuclear Armageddon.
I would in that position:
- No Information out
- Immediately Defense Response, Anti Missile kind of thing
- Large scale counterattacks

I'm shaking to make a decision, and this is through a third pov. Imagine you are in the situation room facing information from multiple angles, to determine which is reliable and which is not, to listen to opinions not only from your allies but also from the enemy in question. No decision will be the right decision here. We can only look back, after all is over and we have the luxury to do so, and judge whether that was a "good" choice or not.
If it makes you feel better then this is likely not all that realistic. Most of the questions she asked during this was information that the president would be expected to know beforehand and know in more detail. For example the president would know the response options and probably already has responses planned out for the most likely scenarios.
I wouldn’t look into this too deeply, I would see this as good to get you thinking but not as all that realistic.
@@conorstewart2214 I agree with you. The president would already be aware of the response choices available for a particular adversary launching against us like that. It would be more a matter of conforming the threat is real and responding in a manner as already discussed in prior scenario-based discussions.

We need to stop taking our freedom for granted, because it could be over as we know it, by nuclear or people.
Most likely our freedom won't be taken away by a foreign country, let alone by a full-blown nuclear war, but rather by our OWN government if we, "the people", don't continue to keep it in check, REGARDLESS of the party that's in power...

I love this girl she always delivers good content the reality of life.
I have my degree in emeremergency management. We would do the "zombie scenario". Basically zombies have taken over X state and we need to contain it and control it. The instructor would change the scenario so its flowing and different. Sometimes it just ended up with a mass evacuation order telling people be out by X time or else. Then the origin city would basically be bombed to hell, and any other state or city that that had a massive zombie population. After that we'd send in military to do a "clean up" job.
Isn't telling people to stay within closed doors far more safer? I mean if they are zombified, they're behind locked doors, and if the zombies attacks, the civilians are hidden behind locked doors.
@@RamBdehow would they then exterminate said zombies without risk of hurting civilians?
@yogammaka That's where. They problem comes in. The instructor would tell us the last know living population, then we'd have to weigh if losing civilians was worth it.
@@thedinkster2163
Which in a situation with zombies, who can multiply in numbers exponentially... It's better to glass the area they inhabit, even though there might be civilians. Zombies are a thing that could take over the world if given the chance. Think Cov19, but way worse, lol.
I know your comment is from 2 weeks ago, but this was just my thoughts on the topic.
Its also kind of interesting how rabies might have been an inspiration for the zombie trope, since people become hydrophobic and essentially just want to spread the disease/infection as much as possible before they unalive.
“what’s the difference between a nuclear response and a conventional response?” uhhh…nukes? 😂
Man I truely love your videos and how you highlight the things a majority of us wouldn’t even have a chance to experience or even think about. This video here cut deep for me cause it’s like dang what would I do. The response. The decision making. Pray for our leadership, and thank you for your channel and how you utilize your platform.
Wow! Just wow! I'm glad the UA-cam algorithm fed this video to me. Amazing!
"There is no good solution". That is the goal of MAD. It is designed that way on purpose! If there was a good solution for any party, we would have had WWIII and maybe WWIV by now. It sucks, but any situation that has a potential positive outcome for any party in conflict is guarenteed to lead to conflict, because that party feels they will come out better in the end. The goal is to convice all parties that a nuclear exchange is guarenteed to be lost by everyone.
The best way to illustrate this is the scene in Crocodile Dundee, where he is faced with muggers with knives, and he pulls out a bigger knife and walks away (without a fight). The best kind of war is the one you don't fight. When faced with an adversary who only responds to strength, you build up your strenth and convince them of your resolve. Think bullies in the school yard. Bullies never harass the kids that stand up to them. In reality, All of our adversaries (with Nukes) are bullies, and all ofthem are only curtailed by strength. They do not respond to playing by the rules. The only good thing about bullies is they have a strong sense of self preservation. They do not sacrifice themselves for any reason. Personal survival is priority no 1 for them. And that is a good thing in this case. If we keep convicing them they a guarenteed to die if they decide to escalate, they will refrain from doing so.
Best comment on here. Even though we want peace more than anything, patriotism and military power needs to be first in order to maintain it. If other leaders are afraid of our capabilities, they won't test us. But you said it better.
I don't think the president can even handle the most stressful day at the president's job. Let's not pretend a background in politics gives you and edge here.
A background in politics gives you the ability to manipulate other politicians. The ability to make lucid decisions under pressure is something you learn in the school of Hard Knocks.
80% of the military have absolutely no background or skills to handle something like this, the only advantage would be the ability to alert the military of an incoming nuclear strike to prepare for defcon 1 and that’s about it
Wow, this is amazing. The actors get an absolute oscar. Michelle gets everything the world can give for her questions, responses, and the EDITING. This is top tier.
She went into it thinking everyone could win, but from someone who grew during the cold war. We already knew that no one wins. Neither can you be void of emotion like Hitler or Putin, or only emotional when it concerns yourself like Trump. Intellect, intuition, emotions, quick thinking, prevention, planning and the courage and ability to act decisively when necessary are all important.
The missles has already been launched, even if you counter attack, your people still die.
You fail to understand that the enemy also has nuclear armed allies who could decide to get involved or not get involved depending on whether he perceives us as weak or strong. This is why a large-scale response is in order - to deter anyone else from getting involved because they know we will cause them 100X as much death and destruction in a response to an attack than they can realistically do in any attack against us.
