Those men and Granny are so lucky to have you as the head chef. You make such great “Real Meals!”
My mom was born in 1917 in Clintwood, Virginia. She was the eldest girl of 13 children and learned to cook at a very early age to help her mother feed the brood (who were mostly boys..lol). She became an excellent cook and made this dinner every New Year's day. Thanks so much for bringing back this wonderful memory. 🤗 And I hope 2024 is a wonderful year for you all. ❤
I could almost smell your delicious supper. Will be making that cake. Happy New Year 🎉
My grandparents and mom all lived in coeburne Virginia, not to far away. Grandma had 13 kids as well, I can’t even imagine having that many kids.
Wonderful story 😊
Honey cozy loving gorgeous animals so sweet!!! Wonderful and kind people what’s not to love.
Im a first Generation American My parents were German immigrants. Tradition for New Years day was to eat saur Kraut with pork for good luck throughout the year Wishing you and your family and all your subs a blessed New years
Eating black eyed peas on New Year’s Day started in the south on January 1 1863.
I’m from Texas and we’ve always had them on the first, not to forget the ham, greens and cornbread of course.
My children also have adopted the tradition.
I’m thrilled to see that other people everywhere enjoying the same food. ❤
Hi Valerie - Growing up in an Italian-American family we were told that lentils should be eaten just after the stroke of midnight of the new year. We believed that more lentils you eat, the more the new year will be full of wealth, luck, and prosperity. Valerie - it always brings a smile to my face when I see the expression that you make when you taste your food creations. In this video - the expression and the shaking motion that you make after tasting the apple cake are priceless! Thank you for another great video. Maybe you can mention the progress on the home renovation in your next video.
Aww! Kitty is lonely, can Milo come in?😮
We grew up eating black eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread. I didn’t carry on the tradition. Only tradition we have is we are always asleep when the ball drops. 😂
Lol
😂
Hilarious! Me too!
My family too. We Re all getting old!
Same! 😂😂😂😂
Hi Valerie that cake looks so pretty. I know your family loves your cooking . I can tell you put alot of love in your cooking absolutely one delicious meal. You got to be enjoying your space in your kitchen. You look so happy living at your new homestead . Looking forward to a new year of your sweet videos . ❤ and thanks for sharing this traditional new year meal.
Thanks so much
I hate that my mom has been gone 3 years. We always cook Thanksgiving and New Years dinner together. Our meal has always been black-eyed peas, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, collard greens, ham in the peas, turkey necks in the greens, chicken wings with cajun rub, and chitterlings.
Oh wow 😋🙏🏾❤️Happy New Year!
You keep your kitchen so neat while cooking. When I make a big meal, my kitchen looks like a tornado has blown through it.
The best way is clean up as you go it's so rewarding 🙌
My grandparents immigrated from czech. Rep. I'm not sure of the year. I saw a picture of the boat and it sure was small. My grandmother would make homemade noodles, sauerkraut and pork kielbasa. She was so wonderful, I miss her dearly, they were escaping communism and my grandfather worked in a coal mine his whole life which wasn't very long. Love your videos have watched from the beginning.
Wow, what a feast Valerie! My family just got back from Disney World to watch our granddaughter March in her high school band so we celebrated our New Years dinner with all our family today! Our tradition growing up was always pork and saurkraut for good luck and all the fixings to go with it! I love beans and greens too! Can't get over how much your pets are so loving and happy!❤
My dog went nuts when Willow was playing with her squeaky toy!
I'm from Texas and we grew up eating, black eyed peas, cabbage, cornbread and a ham. Still make it every New Year til this day.
Never heard of these traditional New Years Day foods, but I was Raised in so California. We always have Chinese Food so we can get our fortune for the New Year. Have a blessed New Year y'all. I will be praying for us all. ❤
My mom was the oldest of 13 children and she was born in 1922. My grandma used to go out and ring three chickens by the neck about once a week and that was all the meat they got. They grew up on cornbread and buttermilk and vegetables.
Here in Spain we eat 12 grapes before midnight, which is said to bring us luck. I wish you much happiness and love for 2024🥰
It all looks delicious. Yum!
Yes the dinner looks amazing! Every since I can remember growing up that has always been our New Year meal too!❤
My mom would boil coins to sterilize and put them in cooked cabbage. You had to eat all your cabbage before getting a second helping. Lol. An old Irish wealth New years tradition.
Happy New Year and it's nice to see you following the traditional New Year meal. Also enjoyed you keeping the volume on while you cooked. It was nice hearing the sounds of the kitchen as a wonderful meal comes together.
We also used the ham bone from xmas, with butter beans fried potatoes and onions with corn bread.
The dinner looks delicious Valerie and that apple cake looks tasty. Take care see Y'ALL next time.
Thank you for sharing Valerie! The meal was incredible and seeing the fur babies is always great!
Delicious looking meal & I’ve got to try the apple cake, looked scrumptious❣️
Next time, I will be seated at your Valerie. Everything looks delicious!❤❤❤
That brown sugar apple cake looks wonderful I'm going to try it. You always cook delicious meals I would love to come to dinner lol
I’m in Scotland. Here, they run into the freezing waters for a swim on New Year’s Day. It’s called the Looney Dook. Also, New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay and there is a tradition called first footing. If you have the first foot through the door that night, you are treated to whiskey.
I love hearing traditions around the world. Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a Happy New Year!😁
Wishing you your family and everyone a blessed New Year ! 🙏
I also grew up on this meal. I make it for the sake of tradition. I only used about 3/4 lb of peas because my family doesn't really eat many leftovers. I was the only one to eat any the second day. I saved my Christmas hambone with a lot of ham on it. First I boiled it for an hour, then added the peas. After the peas were tender, I removed the bone and excess fat. I also made cornbread and collard greens. My family like Mac and cheese, so that was our other side.
Sounds delicious. 😀
We have ham, black eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread. I also fixed a corn casserole because we like that.
Your food is the best you and your husband work hard I love you ❤️ God bless you and Jesus bless you and your family
Happy 2024! Your meal looks great! We had fried chicken, rice, black eyed peas, collard greens, potato salad, jalapeño cornbread, banana pudding, brownies. There were 3 families of friends there - watching from Lake Wales, Florida
Yum! That sounds delicious.
Such a delicious looking dinner! My family is all from Kentucky, although I was born and raised in Michigan, my mother always cooked black eyed peas and corn bread for New Years. We always had a huge garden where my mother grew collards and mustard green. Oh do I ever remember picking, cleaning and blanching them for days, to put up in the freezer, to have year around. Such sweet memories. You should grow a patch this summer to put in the freezer. Happy New Year to you and your wonderful family.❤
We hope to be able to plant a small garden this year. I would love to be able to grow our own collards. 😋
Your house plants are lovely,
Such sweet fur babies ❤
Happy New Year to Valerie, Tim, Granny, and the boys! And let's not forget Milo, Max and sweet Willow! Wishing you health, happiness, peace and abundance from your friend in Michigan 🎉❤
I grew up eating black eyed peas, greens or Cabbage, Canied yams, Corn bread.......... My mother would boil a dime and put it in the peas and who ever found or got the dime would have good luck. That was my family tradition. Being with Family 💋💋💋
Love your fur babies!!!
Love that kind of cornbread mix, I also use that brand in my bread maker for sandwich bread.
We have the same tradition for New Year’s Day. We had black eyed peas, pork chops, turnip greens and sweet potato casserole with brown sugar, butter and pecans on top.
Valerie I absolutely love you and your family and this adventure you are on in building your forever home . It makes my day when I get notified that you have posted a video….i could watch y’all for hours. God Bless each of you 🙏🏼❤️

Sending many blessings to you and your family for the new year 🎊 🎉😘👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Awesome. Grand holiday much love shown❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We eat the same thing here in South East Texas and a good sweet potato pie 😅 The next day I make a black eyed pea soup over rice, with onion, bell pepper Rotel tomatoes, çan of green chilis and a table sprone of garlic, garlic powder , onion powder, a little black pepper so good over rice
Great Valeria!! Everything looks great!!
We didn't have potatoes or apple cake but substituted rice and cream cheese cupcakes. Other than that our meal was identical. Happy New Year.
Our family has the same meal as yours for New Years Day. I wish you and your family blessings , health and happiness this year. ❤🎉
Thank you, and I hope you have a Happy New Year!
That apple cake sure looked delicious! My mom always used to make pork for New Years. No blackeyed peas or greens. Meals are always super delicious at your house. Happy New Years to you and your family. Looking forward to seeing what your plans are this year for your homestead.💕
I’m from Western Maryland with lots of German ancestors. We alway have pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and pork gravy. Delish
I’m going to try the cake, sure looked easy and Delicious!
Wow Valerie the apple cake looked great. I'm like you. I'm not much of a baker. Most of it ends up in a disaster or mess. I'm going to try this. It looks like a great snack with a cup of coffee. Thanks for the recipe. Enjoyed your video too
The dinner look delicious!! And I love the apple cake!!! I made chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans! No dessert!!
Our tradition has always been pork chops, sauerkraut, mashed white potatoes, stringbeans and applesauce. It's a real favorite.
Your dinner looks delicious, especially those crispy chops and that beautiful apple cake!
I really love your new work table. A huge improvement over the folding table. Also, you have the most beautiful tea towels. What is the brand and where did you buy them.
Thank you for sharing your meals and home rehab with us. Wishing all God's blessings on you and your family in the new year.
Hi Valerie! I had to laugh at myself because when you raised the lid to the black eyed peas I inhaled! LOL I do remember my family having ham and cabbage for New Year every year, but I don't know if they had anything else. Everything you cooked looked so yummy and the cake...well I may have to look that up for my hubby. Thank you for sharing your life with us. I always look forward to your videos. Wishing you abundant blessings this new year!!! :)
Hehe. It did smell very yummy. Happy New Year!
That little wiggle you did when tasting the apple cake cracked me up.I needed that.thank you so much for just being you!God bless!
We make our Peas the same way but use crowder peas (field peas) for our Pennies for the new year. Collard are dollars! Also I reserve the pot likker from the beans and add back rice to make them Hoppin John's, a traditional meal from Charleston SC area. ❤ Happy New Year!!!
I'm Scottish so new years eve and day are precious so new years eve we make either tattie soup or lentil soup , steak pie with potatoes cabbage , peas, carrots, then it's ready for the next day, happy new year Valerie and Tim and boys xx
Happy New Years!
Hi. I have never heard of this tradition. But it is interesting. We just always bbq
I haven't cooked them sense my dad passed he would always ask me to cook some with greens and corn bread
We just had blackeye peas for new years day, your dinners look so good.. can't wait for your next video ,until next time God bless you and your family ❤
You got down in the kitchen sis Happy Holidays.
We always have pork loin , green beans and macaroni and cheese on News Years Day for dinner with a prayer for health happiness and prosperity
❤❤here in Indiana we eat pork and cabbage. When I was young my dad had us sew a pillow case and put a penny in the hem, to carry al, the money you will get in the new year. I don't think we ever got any. Lol.
I made an apple cake on Thanksgiving and I love them! Our families tradition for 'good luck' on New Years is from my Pennsylvania Dutch (German immigrants) ancestors. Sauerkraut and pork. However I do not believe in luck but in blessings from the Lord so it's more for fun and yum! Your food always looks so delicious! Love watching!
I’m 72 and have never had Black eyed peas… I might just get some and try them.
dinner and dessert looked very tasty 😃 happy new year to you all 😘
Happy New Year to you all. Best of the best wishes!
Yes, that's tradition in my home. Love the video! A tip for the parchment paper. Wod it into a ball then straighten it out, then you can shape it into the pan. Happy New Year to you and the family!
Great tip!
Happy New Year meal looked very tasty especially cake.
No traditions in my family for the food we have just that we are together. Happy New Year to you and yours honey and I hope all your dreams come true for 2024.
Lovely meal, Valerie!
Now let the men clean up for you! ❤️❤️
She probably prefers to do it herself. Tim has helped often.
Please let Milo come in where it is warm. It's so sad seeing him all alone outside. I know he came in at your other place. Happy New Year to your family!
Milo prefers the outdoors.

You need a large electric skillet. It would hold at least 4 chops. Maybe more. That's what I've been using since my mom got me one for my bridal shower. I love mine and I'm still using it 45 years later! 😅
I enjoy watching you. I know everything is not always great but I have never heard you complaining. Thanks ! I will be trying that apple & hope it turns out as beautiful as yours. God Bless you in this year & years to come.
The food looked delicious!!
Apple cake looks delicious ❤
We also have blackeyed peas, ham hocks/diced ham, fried potatoes, and cornbread. As much as you cook you need a double oven. Oh my, that apple cake looks so delicious.
Everything looks soooo delicious! The apple cake looks amazing! Happy New Year!❤🎉
The cake looked awesome. So did everything else.
Take your parchment paper and crumple it in to a ball, then straighten it out and put it in your pan. The parchment paper will form more easily to your pan.
Grew up eating the traditional meal.
Our family New Years tradition is always Kielbasa and sauerkraut.
