  • Once upon a time, people ate certain foods only when they were readily available, accessible and in season. These days, however, it is extremely easy for us to forget about seasons when we eat. Thanks to modern food processing techniques and worldwide distribution of resources, most foods remain available year-round. However, just because technology makes it possible for us to have oranges in winter, doesn't mean we should eat all foods whenever we please.
According to scientists, researchers and natural health experts, eating the right kinds of foods during the right times of year and avoiding them otherwise is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Seasonal foods are a way of reconnecting with the organic cycle that nature intended for us.
Nature is just great, seasons provide us with what we need, when we need it. Seasonal produce meets our body's natural nutritional needs. Fall provides us with hearty root vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, turnips and beets which are used to cook warming stews and soups during the cold winter months. We also have citrus fruits, which are full of vitamin C that will help us fight of infections and colds. Fall also brings us the biggest harvest of apples, a fruit that’s filled with fiber and pectin to help us digest those bulkier foods we’re eating for warmth.
Summer on the other hand, provides us with watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce and even cucumbers. They are watery and hydrating fruits plus crisp and refreshing vegetables perfect for salads. It also gives us foods with rich sources of carbohydrates, such as peaches, melon, and corn. Spring is associated with the liver, according to traditional Chinese medicine. The liver is one of the body's primary detoxification organs. Synergistically, spring is also the time when dandelion and other bitter greens are fresh and available; these bitter greens support the liver and its function of cleansing the blood.
By eating freshly harvested produce, you will be rotating your foods, thereby keeping your body from developing intolerances to certain foods and reaping the health benefits of a diet that is diverse and naturally detoxifying. Seasonal foods also have a much higher antioxidant content than non-seasonal foods.
A 2018 published study in the journal "Nutrients", described the results of a study that was performed on rats. The rats were maintained on a “short-day” schedule, intended to reflect the short day length of winter, and fed cherries, which are out of season in winter. The rats ultimately experienced a handful of adverse metabolic effects in response to this dietary pattern, including the increased risk of obesity. This study demonstrates that our bodies internal clocks and the metabolic processes governed by those clocks become disrupted when food is at odds with environmental changes, mainly seasons, are consumed.
Our ancestors ate seasonal food because they didn't have much choice. We, on the other hand, can make the informed and educated choice of opting to eat only those foods that are grown seasonally. Coordinating our diets with the cycles of the seasons naturally cleanses us and builds a healthy body.

Thanks ..appreciated good advice as always ...now if only they were not sprayed, dyed, picked too young to reach full maturity .... what an advantage that would be ....still we are so lucky to have the choice ...
    Stay healthy, stay safe.

Indeed, usually local farmers markets are pretty safe. Or if have the space to grow your own. I guess it seemed simpler back then.
