The first half is the trauma. The second half is the healing. Like a wave rises to tension and then comes back down to a resolution. Most likely why the film is called Waves.
The second half was simply about people trying to move on with their lives and pick up the pieces. I get your point it does not compare to the first half and feels like two different movies, but it did not bother me at all. I loved the journey.
Film of the year for me so far (sight unseen on Parasite), I think the second half works so well as a truly poetic reflection of the first half and it utterly tore my heart out.
A mix of Euphoria (the HBO series), Mommy (by Xavier Dolan), Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. There are some questionable decisions about storytelling but I think it's an defiant, poignant film that also brings some interesting topics to the table, such as masculinity, parenthood, social mobility related to a racial dimension, and dealing with hard feelings.
I found this video very insightful, mainly because I was lucky enough to see Waves at a film festival in September, and I felt almost the opposite as the two of you because I loved the second half more than I loved the first half. keep up the great reviews.
I like the parts you touched on and your analysis of the movie, I don't agree with your take on the second half tho purely for the fact that its delving into the minds of the characters and how everyone opens up to Emily but she doesn't really get the chance to open up herself. I think the second half hits you way harder than the first if you can relate to the characters and how hard it is holding in the emotions of something so traumatic.
I felt like I was in a dream watching first half of this film, particularly in the final buildup through the party scene. It was a very surreal experience.
If you are a movie enthusiastic then do watch these Indian films.. @RoseofSharon 1: Pink (2016) 2: Black (2005) 3: Taare Zameen Par (2007) 4: Super Deluxe (2019) 5: The Shakespeare Trilogy By Vishal Bhardwaj (1: Maqbool(2003) = Macbeth 2: Omkara (2006)= Othello 3: Haider (2014) = Hamlet) 6: Kapoor and Sons (2016) 7: Tumbbad (2018) 8: Andhadhun(2018) 9: Queen (2013) 10: Dangal (2016) If you think I'm just bragging then also check their IMDb rating 😅
I'm seeing a vocal minority of movie reviewers rating this as one of the best films of the year. Based on how Best Picture nominations work, there's some chance that it JUST squeaks in there as the 9th or 10th nominee.
I thought that was a possibility... but after seeing it I think the style is way too out there for the academy. I’m not surprised that a lot of people are mixed on it.
That Daniel Day-Lewis comparison with Lucas Hedges just put Brother Bro on thin ice for me, man. Let's not forget that this seems to be the first year he actually starts acting... you know... well!
Since RDJ had been brought to supporting do you think he has a shot at a nomination/win Could you imagine the Oscar narrative to get more views Pitt stans vs MCU fans
"One of the greatest filmmakers working today, easily. Some of the best acting, like, maybe ever." You guys are way over the top. Waves is style over substance. The spinning camera, while an interesting way to introduce the characters at the beginning, becomes a tired and annoying device after the second or third time he uses it. I think Tarantino or PTA can breathe easily knowing Trey Edward Shults isn't hot on their heels (not even close), although if I were the director of Euphoria I might be concerned for my job, which, not surprisingly the producers of that series clearly have their hands all over this. So... if you liked Euphoria (I didn't), you will probably like this film. If not, you won't like this for the same reasons. Not to mention the glaring plot hole (spoiler alert) of the super-involved parents not being made aware of or asking about the MRI results until after it's too late? Please. Weak storytelling. I don't believe it.

The whole prom night sequence is one of the most heart racing sequences I’ve seen in a long time
I was wondering why I didnt cry during that scene. And trey waited until the dad has to talk to the daughter to make the tears come. So good
Waves was so robbed during award season. One of the best films of 2019 imo. Up there with Parasite
the “you’re not my mom” scene hit me different man. not my exact situation but holy shit i’ve literally lived that.
Her reply “I am your mum Tyler” had me in tears

Same. I don't cry but there were tears.

You guys sat a few rows in front of me at the film last night. Would've said hi but I had to get going after it was finished. Cool seeing you!
Literally Yes, my Favorite of 2019 and an All Time Favorite

Also, looks like 2019 has gotten A24 out of their 2018 slump!

Hedges wasn’t very good in three billboards IMO but he was a lot better in this movie

Bearded Jagger You’re not very bright are you?
@@VatnikSlayer2799 Probably a lot smarter than you if you thought Waves was a great film. Well, we can at least assume I have better taste in cinema.
