    The way Professor Starkey presents history is very much as my history teacher did it (I count myself very lucky to have had him for a teacher). He explains people's characters and their motivations, and also explains the prevailing social, religious and politicial attitudes of the time. Professor Starkey really brings these historical characters to life again, and it really helps us to understand the reasons why they did what they did. Instead of just reciting dry facts such as dates and events, Professor Starkey shows what the historical characters would have experienced, how they reacted to events, and how and why the public viewed them as they did. It makes it so much more interesting and so much easier to understand!
    Poor Mary, Queen of Scots! She had such an unhappy life.

      He sounds like the late Dr. David W, Bishop who was one of my History Professors at NCCU many years ago. A sharp dresser, and an excellent educator, and quietly let you know about corrections that you needed to do with any work that you handed to him earlier. Loved his wife and they were married for many years.

I read a few pages of one of her much promoted books and was bored to tears. The dialogue was full of trivia. Cromwell and Anne Boleyn didn't have time for trivia. They had sharp sparkling wits but we never saw any of that in Mantels books.

    Elizabeth appears to have been wise before her years to the politics of her day. By avoiding producing an heir, as well as getting caught up in a queenship-emperiling scandal, she could not readily be driven from power by court intriguers.

    • @ElizabethF2222
      @ElizabethF2222 Рік тому +4

      Exactly! She learned from Mary Queen of Scots and her disastrous marriages. She knew that once she married, whether she did anything wrong or not, scandals could arise and everything her husband did would reflect on her and she wasn't having it. She also knew that she could be overthrown and/or forced to abdicate for her baby son if she'd had an heir.

Until about a hundred years ago civilization did not produce anxious, fragile, and easily daunted people, so don't insult humanity by projecting the entirely artificial stunted psyche with which you are familiar onto the sturdy, indeed, redoubtable souls of centuries past.

    If anyone's seen the series "The Virgin Queen" starring Anne-Marie Duff, Tom Hardy plays Dudley. It's hard to imagine the same guy playing Bane in the Batman movies, but there you are.
    Duff brought something more of an edge to some of the same authentic quotations they use in this documentary. Perhaps her performance was more "emotionally" true to life, even if some of the events were slightly fictionalized.

    The lady descended from William Cecil looks so much like him in her facial features, that it's amazing.
    Almost like looking at someone straight from history, though she's female.
    So strange how after hundreds of years, we still retain facial features from our ancestors.
    And to think, she's a descendant of Elizabeth I's most trusted advisor and friend, who once knew her in the flesh.
    Things like that, always amaze me for some reason.

    This production and Starkey's eloquence and erudiction is astonishing. I have only one complaint: Elizabeth's nearest male relative was Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, her first cousin and son of Mary Boleyn. The duke of Norfolk was only his second cousin once removed: his paternal grandfather had been Anne Boleyn's uncle. But in every aspect is very accurate. The actress that portrates Mary, Queen of Scots , is spot on.

    In my personal OPINION, Henry VIII would've been proud of his daughter. Never before had an English monarch performed with such finesse and composure. I agree that her punishment to the northern rebels was extreme and horrifying compared to todays moral standards but think about how ridiculous it is to align todays society next to that which existed 5 centuries ago and say "fucking evil barbaric cunts!". There were just as many psychopaths in the 16th century as there is today in 2017 it's just societies morals were different. Although Elizabeth did push the northern families to revolt she dealt with the consequences and had to act extremely. A weak king or queen could mean chaos (Henry VI) for the country and ironically could be more dangerous to the people than a harsh and stern monarch (Edward I). She had the guts, balls and fire of her father but had compassion and tolerance like no other ruler at the time. A true example of Queenship/Kingship to the rest of Europe.

      Agreed. Rebellion must be dealt with in order to keep peace within any realm. A weak response would not have been a successful one. Elizabeth ruled over a terribly stricken land....religious fighting was a serious issue all over Europe, with massacres becoming commonplace. Elizabeth was probably among the most reasonable ruler of the day (at least as far as religious tolerance went). Imagine being in her position !! The leader of the catholic church was pushing for her death, encouraging secret fanatics to murder her ! SHE wanted to be fair to all, but any one of them might be fervently believing that paradise awaited them should they murder her !

      the reason you'd ride a mule, is simply because it's a steadier and far more comfortable mount, less likely to make bob up and down the rider (so being easier on the limbs and back). it's also easier to get on and off, since a mule is often shorter than a horse.
      And no, it's not a matter of superstition....seriously people then didn't do everything over superstition...

    What BS is this about "being the same as Henry to the North"? Elizabeth did not care if they were Catholics. As was said in the earlier part of this video segment, she only asked that they be loyal subjects to the crown. When people in the North decided to rebel against the crown/her, she killed them for that. Because they were ACTIVELY disloyal, and wanting to kill her (part of Mary of Scotland's being Queen, would mean that Elizabeth would have to be killed) And to my mind, rightly so. So no the same as some petty Henry VIII BS about his latest marriage/property, or indeed fervent Mary I killing people based on their religious beliefs. It was self-defense.

      +WedgeOfSpite Interesting, well presented comment. I've always had a problem with so much history of violence in the name of religion through the ages and still occurring today. I agree that Elizabeth I ordered these executions as self-defense (they certainly would've killed her, given the chance) as opposed to strong religious motives. She had made it clear that her subjects were free to worship as they preferred. Whatever else can be said about Elizabeth, she certainly was shrewd and had learned, out of necessity, how to outmaneuver her enemies.

      @Devilsmygrandpap 8 років тому +7

      Exactly, it is hardly tyrannical to quash a violent rebellion. She appeared devoutly secularist throughout her reign, only resorting to violence when on the defensive.
      Also essentially abolishing her family's famous, brutal execution methods for high treason.
      She took great interest in intellectual pursuits from an early age and probably thought theology was a matter for universities, not something to provoke war.

    Makes so many good points about sexual assault in film and If Then theory that "if they say it it must be true." If people are drilled with same ideas on social media or politically or at church people will accept it as true or normal. Seeing sexual assault constantly having it used basically as a sex scene gives the wrong person the ok to ruin someone's life and hurt them in a way they will never recover. Women live in fear from birth of being attacked and we're usually right. Most men are are abused as children. There are the stats of what's reported but from my own experience I've rarely met someone who hasn't been assaulted or molested. If that seems far fetched remember you are reading this bc people see no problem with seeing sexually assault or having it mentioned in almost every movie including children's shows. Sexual assault is too common to be just a couple of people who show and do their bad deeds and disappear sexual assault is common because rapists are common. We need to look at things and think about how much we are using what is considered a war crime as a sex scene. Rape culture makes rapists and makes it harder for victims to come forward. This psychology this culture and this is an issue to big to be ignored and buried.
