SOLO WILD CAMPING IN THE PEAK DISTRICT | THE ROACHES | PEAK DISTRICT WALK

- I decided last minute to solo wild camp at The Roaches in the Peak District Staffordshire so I could scout out a hike in the area the next day. I also practiced a little astro photography and had a wonderful misty descent the following day.

Beautiful scenery! Thanks for taking us along on your trip!
Loved this video Mary! From the start to the end it was mesmerizing. Amazing scenery, wonderful music and superb presentation. Perfect in every way! x
Thank you so much Mum ❤️ (although I did wonder if you’d tell me off for sleeping so close to the edge🤣)
Your enthusiasm is contagious. The good kind of contagious. :)
Thank you so much Justin 😁
Hi Mary, really enjoyed this video, nice lighting conditions and you are a natural presenter! Wow, great location, filming and choice of music. Great video, thanks for sharing and all the best, Paul
Thank you so much Paul, I really appreciate that!
Love your enthusiasm for the outdoors! Great film making!
Thank you so much Pete!
Mary, you make awesome videos. Thank you.
So glad you enjoy them Wallace!
So refreshing to see you so giddy and happy. Beautiful footage and the gourmet breakfast burritos left me wanting more 😊. Stay safe and enjoy
Life . ❤️
Thanks so much James, they really were so delicious😋
I bought the Tiger Wall because of your review in your PCT great videos, and it makes me happy in a funny way to see you still using the tent. Like we’re tent buddies, lol. A bit silly, but regardless, thank you for your honest review of the tent, it has served me well so far.
Hey tent buddy 😆 I love that - so glad you are enjoying it and the review helped!
Love your spontaneous adventurous spirit - a nice way to feed your soul - and bring moments of pure joy into your life.
So true Steve - thank you!
Almost looks like the "Sierra".... Love you in the outdoors camping... Miss you in Calif
Thanks so much Mike!
Your excitement is contagious ^^
Thank you 😁
I like the bigger pot and pan/lid. Your sunset is my sunrise. A yoga mat under the air pad will protect it from punctures. A very nice video. You seemed more excited too. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Thanks so much Rick, yes I was a little giddy being back in the outdoors again 🤣
What a lovely video n I av to say after losing my dad recently your bubbly personality is a tonic n puts a maszive smile on my face....thank you x
I am so very sorry to hear that Terry, sending all my best wishes to you 💚
Thanks ..you do cheer me up x
It is so nice seeing your smiling face. I'll be hiking the AT next March. Hope to see you then. John from MI
Thanks so much! No plans to hike the AT myself but have an amazing time!
We are so lucky that you share your amazing photography and video skills with us. Thank you! 🙏🏼👍
So lovely of you to say so Karen😊
Great to see you so excited. Love you videoing, photography, with music and all. I remember you on the PCT last year at this time hoping you make it before the snow set in.
Thank you so much Cheryl, gosh yes it would be around this time I was still thinking I would avoid the snow!
You and your adventures always make my day so much brighter. Thanks and happy trails
Glad you like them John - thanks so much!
Wonderfully fun and awesome video. Thank you. Look forward to your next video! Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it Betty - thank you!
Beautiful video Mary. Brings to mind your PCT adventure just a bit. Good thing you didn't wait a year to do that trip!
Thank you Hu B! Yes I’m so glad I did it last year.
I haven't done hardly any 'wild' camping this year, but when I did and crawled into my sleeping bag, I always had a flood of benign PCT memories come to me. I don't know much about wild camping in the UK, but I'm going to check as soon as this video is done.
I feel exactly the same!
Good to see you again ms.Mary lovely country side, I do miss seeing ur every night when u was on pct hike but thanks for trip through ur area great video and music, ur a joy ,also good sleep system ok cheers
Thank you David, it was lovely to be sleeping outside again!
Thank you for another beautiful video. I'm so glad you were able to give us your PCT vlogs last year. The fires and virus made for a very bad hiking season, this year.
So glad you enjoyed it 😁
Great video 👌.Was thinking about a wild camp there myself. All the best
Thank you!
Looks like a nice area, but an interesting name (Roaches? In American English, we use the term "roach" to refer to a cockroach). Beautiful sunset, loved the silhouette shot. Looking forward to your astrophotography shots.
Thanks so much Tom! I believe the name came from the French for rocks “roches” so not the critters thankfully.
😊💖🐶🐶 WOW!!
As usual wonderful
Thank you Dave!
Hi Mary Mansfield, that was a very good video and the music in the back ground goes with it ,you are the good spirit of the mountains thanks ✌👍👍
Thank you very much Gabriel 😊
Wonderful video! That breakfast burrito looked yummy! I will definitely try that. I love ravens ! We have them here and they are curious creatures. Best!
Thanks so much Creed M
Fabulous video Mary. The Roaches is one my favourite places in the world. My husband proposed to me at the small pool you walked past at 16:28 x
Awwwh that is so lovely, you probably know this already then - but if not that pool is called Doxey Pool 😊
Fantastic Mary. Sometimes the last minute camps are the best. 😊
Thank you!
Love Big Agnes..I have one man tent for summer adventures (Flycreek).
Loved the film.. beautiful shots of nature.
Thanks for sharing 🌹 🌞
Thank you so much treklinda!
Omg looks amazing I want to have a go at wild camping
You should Samantha - it's a lot of fun 😁
Absolutely amazing video sweetheart. I so wish I had gone with you 😩😩😘
Setting up your tent after dark is a good idea for stealth/safety reasons find a good camp walk on come back just before/after dark set up camp
That is so true. I remember on the PCT there was the odd time I felt a little nervous if I was near other busier trails and I would wander around for a bit until I set up camp after dark. Hope you are keeping well and I really do appreciate all your support here and over on Patreon 😊
Very nice! Quite a change overnight but you get to enjoy both types of weather. Was anyone else also wild camping in the area?
Thanks so much! No there wasn’t anyone else I saw that night.
Thanks for this beautiful video! I’d love a future video about your experience with Astro photography when you get a chance!
Thank you so much Susanna! I might need a bit more practice first - when I do I’ll share it with you on Patreon 😊
Mary Mansfield No rush! Thanks!
I recently tried your mac and no cheese recipe and it was really good so thanks for sharing. I look forward soon to try making the egg dish next.
Wonderful! Glad you enjoyed it!
My hubby and i are always up there hiking. Just yesterday in fact! We'de love to wild camp but would hate to be asked to move on in the middle of the night I have liked and subscribed!
Thank you so very much Maggi! I know it would be awful to be asked to move wouldn't it. I have heard it sometimes happens at very popular locations, but discreet and less visited areas are usually okay!
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Where you were is our hottest spot 😁
Absolutely gorgeous video and what a fantastic spot you had!! I love the mystical look of the mist and as always appreciate the effort you put in so we can enjoy these beautiful places with you. I did this hike last year with my Englishman and we so enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video as I have a feeling I know where you might be heading 😁😁 oh and I have to try the recipe, that looked yummy.
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it, such a lovely area isn’t it!
That was lovely. Hopefully next spring you can go out for some extended wild camping walks. I'd love to see your samples of astrophotography as I studied physics and astrophysics. I'm still hoping to see that vegan recipe though. 😉
Thanks Steven - the recipe is there now😁
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Did you have a recipe for those spinach bites you showed in your previous video? Those looked great, too.
@@stevenvarner9806 I didn't make them I got them from the supermarket - they are a brand called 'Strong Roots'
Hi Mary such lovely videos keep them coming
Just wondering have you had any problems parking over night or anything always worries me when going on a wild camp
Thank you Johns Adventures! No I’ve not had any problems with parking anywhere.
Awesome video my friend. Thanks for sharing. You have my sub & support. Greetings from Sweden. Cheers 🙌🏿
Thank you so much, really glad you enjoyed it Imran!
I’m pretty sure that misty lake/pond at the end is where the swamp witch from the never ending story lived.
😂
And I still say she needs a wind break for the stove
What a wonderful mystical respite to get lost and disappear into after all the crazy political events here in the US.
Thank you for taking us there with you.
❤️🙏🏻🤗
Thank you so much for coming along Anita 😊
Great video. Do you ever get worried doing Solo camps
Not at all Peter, I think I have just got so used to sleeping outdoors it’s as natural to me as sleeping in a house!
What are the camping rules in a location like this in Britain? Do you need a permit? Are there many other campers? Seems like just a wonderful spot.
There are no permits or anything as it’s not officially classed as legal, but it is tolerated. In England and Wales you should camp in designated campsites. If you don’t you should try and obtain permission from the land owner to camp which I always try and do where possible, but it’s so difficult to find out who owns the land a lot of the time. The ‘wild campers’ here that I have seen so far are very respectful and set up late around sunset and away from paths and leave early the next day so not to cause a nuisance. Also making sure never to leave any trace. No one wants to spoil it for others and it’s very rare anyone is asked to leave or move on. If a land owner was to approach and ask you to leave, you pack up without question, be polite and leave. There weren’t any other campers that night but I have seen a few here before when I’ve arrived before sunrise.
So, what is involved in "wild camping" in any given area in England and Wales (I know the rules are a bit different in Scotland) -- do you need permit(s) or do you have to camp in a designated campsite? That was definitely a surpassingly pretty camping spot.

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures I really like it that Leave No Trace is becoming a universal set of norms. What you described is actually pretty similar to the U.S. situation in practice. Our access to land is not as widespread, so much of our camping is done on public lands (state or federal), which are governed by a patchwork of rules. We try to keep to designated campsites, but when that isn't possible, we try to employ Leave No Trace in any "stealth" sites we might need to use (durable surfaces, no fires, 200 feet from water, etc.). But then, you know all this!
Barraca Amarelinha
NOT cheezy !!! It's camp magic !!!! silly girl !😆😀
cup of hot joe and a foggy morning !!! ur food ALWAYS looks yum !!!! 😋😛🥰
Thanks so much Tracy! 😊
😍
I think when the pandemic eases and overseas travel resumes, you may be largely responsible for an influx of North American hikers to the UK! 😀🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️😄

I submerge the yellow submarine, you have an email to accompany me. I saw your videos and learned the phrase Very Cool baby from you. I don't use face, instagram. Twitter is too much for my head.
